Country hallway photo in New York with medium tone hardwood floors and white walls — Houzz
I think this is a really awesome hall. I love the guard rails. I like that it's darker. It's a nice contrast. I also like the hardwood floors with the high vaulted ceiling. Overall it's just a really nice look. The only thing I don't like is the wood on the floors do not match the wood of the ceiling. Other then that this is a super awesome hall? - gilleale

How do I add storage to my hallway design?

If you have a small home, adding hallway storage solutions is a great way to save much-needed space. When executing your hallway ideas make sure to avoid narrowing an already narrow space. Instead, think about how you can take advantage of the vertical surface of the walls. Stay away from full-sized furniture and try to incorporate built-in bookcases and skinny console tables into your hallway design ideas. Also, consider adding narrow shelves on the wall, just make sure they don't cut into your walking space since that is the hallway’s prime functionality!

Another more involved hallway storage idea is to actually open up the walls to tap into unused space between the studs. This is a great way to add small nooks and shelving that don’t actually take up any precious space, but are perfect for showcasing hallway decor. You’ll want to hire a professional to make sure there isn’t any plumbing or electrical running through the spots you want to open; if there is, and you absolutely need that extra space, you can always pay to have it moved or rerouted.

How do I incorporate hallway decor?

Your hallway decor should not overwhelm such a small space, but instead enhance it and complement the home’s interior. If you want to display a photo collection, grouping frames in odd numbers and varying the heights is one of the best hallway decorating ideas you can easily implement. You can use shadow boxes and art shelves to display quirky small accessories in your hallway design, but try to rotate them out occasionally to keep in fresh and interesting. Wall space is key, but don't forget about your ceilings and floors as well. Ceiling lights, chandeliers or wall sconces can act as additional decor, while runner rugs are a quick, easy way to add color and pattern to a traditionally all-neutral space.

Put in extra thought when choosing a paint color for the walls. Lots of hallway ideas will feature light colors, which will keep the space feeling open and bright, especially if it’s lacking natural light. Don’t let that stop you from using dark or bright colors though, as these can have an equally impactful presence. If you are planning to use deep hues, consider using contrasting hallway decorating ideas, like white picture frames and bright artwork. Also, keep in mind what color the doors in the hallway are — if they clash with the paint color you should paint them to coordinate, or consider going with a different wall color altogether.
