TWO young boys are dead following a head-on crash on the Newell Highway north of Dubbo.

The boys, aged nine and twelve, were in a 4WD with their parents and younger brother when it collided with a truck at about 3.30am Saturday.

The brothers died at the scene while their five-year-old sibling has been flown to The Children’s Hospital Westmead in a serious condition.

The male truck driver was trapped in his vehicle for more than two hours before being flown to Dubbo Base Hospital.

A hospital spokesman said the truck driver and the two adults from the other vehicle, one male and the other female, are all in a stable condition.

Police believe the family were returning home to Queensland at the time of the crash.

The NSW Police Crash Investigation Unit and local police are on the scene.

The crash site stretches across more than 60m between Burraway Rd and North Terramungamine Rd, about 12km north of Dubbo.

This section of the Newell Highway remains closed in both directions

Officers will prepare a report for the coroner outlining the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
