New intersections unveiled to improve Perth's traffic flow

Around 72,000 vehicles pass through the intersections at Marmion, Hepburn and Whitfords Avenues in Perth's northern suburbs every day - and they clog up worse than a portaloo at an oyster festival.

To help speed things along Main Roads has been upgrading these congestion hot spots, adding extra (and much longer) turning lanes, better pedestrian and cycle access as well as CCTV systems to improve security and help traffic flow better in peak times.

Marmion Avenue improved traffic flow

Works to improve traffic flow and safety along Marmion Avenue are now complete. Vision: Main Roads Western Australia.

The works cost taxpayers $12 million and the state government said the projects were completed two months ahead of schedule.

CCTV has been installed to improve incident management and for Main Roads Western Australia to make traffic signal adjustments that will advance traffic flow during the busiest times.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the upgrades herald the start of the government's plans to improve traffic in Perth's north.

"These intersection upgrades are necessary as an immediate congestion relief measure as the McGowan Labor Government plans its Metronet extension to Yanchep," Ms Saffioti said.

"The new and extended turning lanes have improved traffic flow and safety - especially at peak times."

The City of Joondalup is now completing landscaping works at both intersections.

Any vegetation that was cleared to make way for the widening works was mulched and re-used on site, and old concrete kerbing and pavement was crushed for road base.
