A cyclist has died on Melbourne's bayside after crashing into a parked car.

The cyclist was riding north on Marine Parade, Elwood, just south of Meredith Street, when it is believed he crashed into the back of a parked vehicle at about 7am, police said.

The 51-year-old cyclist from South Yarra died at the scene.

Acting Sergeant Peter Shrimpton said the cyclist was in a group of eight to 10 riders travelling towards the city when the crash occurred.

"We're still trying to determine exactly what's happened that's led up to the actual collision," Sergeant Shrimpton said.

"My understanding was that he was near the front of the group ... which is why we're a bit confused as to what's occurred at this stage.

"He's struck [the car] at what appears to be a fairly high speed, judging by the damage."

The red Toyota hatchback involved in the crash was legally parked in a designated parking lane, Sergeant Shrimpton said.

"It appears, for some reason or another, he's gone into the parking lane and as a result has struck the parked car," he said.

"Ambulance [paramedics] have worked on him for quite a while and tried to keep him alive, but unfortunately in the end he was pronounced deceased."

His riding companions were "very distraught", Sergeant Shrimpton said.

Two weeks ago, a pedestrian was killed after being hit by a cyclist on nearby Jacka Boulevard in St Kilda.

Norman MacKenzie, 85, was using a pedestrian crossing when he was struck by the cyclist travelling in the bike lane along the beachfront about 5.30pm on April 19, police believe.

The cyclist, a 30-year-old Port Melbourne man, was treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the Elwood incident or has any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
