19 reading now

A man has been charged with murder over the death of a man in an inner-Melbourne apartment.

Police were called to a unit in Cecil Street, Fitzroy, about 9pm on Wednesday after a 53-year-old man was found dead.

A 47-year-old man was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with one count of murder.

A nearby resident, known only as Danny, said he had previously heard people arguing in the unit.

"I had occasionally heard some arguments and things like that," he told radio station 3AW.

"I'm not gonna lie it definitely crossed my mind ... 'is this somewhere I want to stay living', but I think in a few days we'll see what actually happened.

"It's a little bit off-putting."

The 47-year-old man faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday and was remanded in custody until August 24.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
