The magical makeup at the Met Gala requires a full set of colouring pencils

The Commes des Garçons inspired Met Gala 2017 has thrown up some extreme and outlandish beauty trends, from Katy Perry's where-to-look-now makeup to J Lo's beautiful barely there putty lips.

The low-down on our favourite looks.

Lips and eyes

The one and only Katy Perry led the pack with her shimmery, metallic, cobalt-blue eyeshadow, contrasted with an outstanding, blood-red, matte lip peeping out from behind her John Galliano veil. Makeup artist Pat McGrath was in her element creating this go-for-broke look.

Statement lips

Makeup artist Fiona Stiles worked up a very vampish Lily Collins, with a highly defined face, starting with perfectly shaped brows, shazam eyelashes and pitch-black lips.

Kendall Jenner let her lips and décolletage (there was plenty of great cleavage on the red carpet this year) do the talking. Again, perfectly groomed brows were the jump-off point for this uber glamorous look.

Jennifer Lopez was flawless as always with carefully applied foundation creating her signature glow. Her makeup artist Kay Montano blended delicious pale pink putty lips that matched back to her equally flattering nail polish. We want it all!

Kylie Jenner and Donatella Versace also hit the nude lipstick button and worked this look back with the latest and greatest shades of platinum hair: Kylie mastering the bobbed wig and Donatella, yellow highlighter-esque stripes.

Candice Swanepoel had all bases covered with her sky-high ponytail, exact winged eyeliner, matte nude lip and gleaming décolletage. We vote this our favourite red carpet moment.

The rise and rise of coloured eyeshadow

Selena Gomez and her devoted makeup artist, Hung Vanngo, smashed bright crimson eyeshadow out of the park. The key to making this out-there look work is to pull back on everything else, except for defined brows and a failsafe foundation.

Actress Sasha Lane worked a red and black cat-eye look. Again the golden rule: with a statement like this, keep the rest of the makeup to a bare minimum.

Rihanna took blush and highlighter to extremes and paired it with a pretty burgundy lip. Definitely wins the prize for the most creative.

Lupita Nyong'o went for the rainbow effect with a hint of gold on the inner rim of her eyes and a pretty glossy lip.
