At least 14 levees along the Missouri River in Missouri are losing the battle against floodwaters. The Missouri Levee & Drainage District Association said Thursday that seven levees have been overtopped by water and seven more have been breached, with water pouring through them. Portions of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers remain well above flood stage.

The police officer who shot and killed a 15-year-old African American teenager in a car as he was leaving a party has been fired. Officer Roy Oliver shot high school freshman Jordan Edwards with a rifle as he sat in a car with his two brothers and two other teenagers while it drove away from a party on Saturday night. Balch Springs police chief Jonathan Haber said Mr Oliver has been fired for violating department policies in the shooting, but said he could not reveal further details of the policies as the officer can appeal his dismissal.

A major dust storm engulfed northern China and Beijing on Thursday, prompting authorities to cancel dozens of flights and urge children and the elderly to stay indoors. At least 48 flights were cancelled, including six international routes in Asia and Russia, according to the Beijing Capital Airport's website. A top Indian diplomat Wednesday summoned Pakistan's ambassador to demand that Islamabad take action against soldiers and officers responsible for the killing and mutilation of two Indian soldiers.
