MALAYSIA: CCTV Footage Shows Turkish School Head Being Arrested in Kuala Lumpur Parking Garage May 028:23

What was initially described in a police report as the kidnapping of the Turkish head of a Kuala Lumpur international school from a parking garage in the city on May 2 is now being described as an arrest by a local police chief. According to a tweeted police statement and local reports, the school head, Turgay Karaman, and a Turkish businessman named ?hsan Aslan, were both arrested on Tuesday, May 2, for ?activities that threaten the safety of Malaysia.? It had initially been reported by Karaman?s wife that he had been kidnapped, and CCTV footage obtained by Storyful shows the moment of what is now being described as Karaman?s arrest. The footage, taken in a parking garage, shows a Toyota car, matching the description of Karaman?s car given in the police report, being parked. A number of men then approach the car, and a man is seen taken away with hands tied behind his back. A friend of Karaman told Storyful that the video showed him. Turkish opposition sites speculated that the arrests were similar to cases in October 2016, in which two Turks reported missing in Malaysia were found to have been deported to Turkey. There was also speculation that the two arrested men were linked to the US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, blamed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the failed 2016 coup. Speaking to Reuters, Karaman?s lawyer, Rosli Dahlan, denied those links. Videos related to Gulen have been shared on a Facebook page in the name of Karaman and with links to the school (see here and here), while friends of Aslan told Turkish Minute that the businessman was a ?sympathizer of the Gulen movement.? Storyful is unable to independently a link between Karaman and the Gulen movement. Human Rights Watch has called on Malaysia to ensure the two men are not extradited to Turkey.
