This tribute goes out to a childhood Hero of mine. I was fortunate to have met this brilliant man at a trade show 13 years ago. His name was Gunpei Yokoi - a master toy & game inventor. Mr. Yokoi was employed at Nintendo Co., Ltd for over 30 years ( since 1965 ). Before Nintendo became this behemoth video game company we know today. They started out a Hanafunda playing card company over a hundred years ago. Mr. Yokoi began working at Nintendo, after graduating college with a degree in electronics from Doshisha University. Yokoi started out working on the assembly line for the Hanafuda cards as a maintenance engineer. In 1970, Hiroshi Yamauchi, president of Nintendo at the time, came to a hanafuda factory Mr. Yokoi was working at and took notice of a toy, an extending arm, which Mr. Yokoi made for his own amusement during spare time as the company's janitor and machine maintenance man. Yamauchi ordered Mr. Yokoi to develop it as a proper product for the Christmas rush. The Ultra Hand was a huge success, selling approximately 1.2 million units. Mr. Yokoi was soon moved from maintenance duty to product development. Mr. Yokoi went on to develop many other toys during Nintendo's toy era, including the Ten Billion Barrel puzzle, a baseball throwing machine called the Ultra Machine, and a Love Tester. Another invention of his, in collaboration with Masayuki Uemura from Sharp, was the Nintendo Beam Gun Games, the precursor to the NES Zapper. When Nintendo eventually began selling video games, Yamauchi asked Mr. Yokoi to come up with products in this field. After viewing a bored business-man playing with a calculator on a bullet-train, Mr. Yokoi invented a prototype.The initial result was Nintendo's popular Game & Watch series of handhelds. Game & Watch games were individual handheld games which featured an LCD-display. Some consider the small handhelds to be a prototype of the Game Boy, which would be released later and prove to be Mr. Yokoi's greatest work. These games also featured a "control-cross," which many video game enthusiasts today know as the D-Pad, a controller part that consists of four buttons grouped in a + shape which correspond to the directions up, down, left, and right. In most games this is used to control the direction of certain objects. The Game & Watch series saw 59 titles between 1980 and 1991. Many popular arcade games were translated into Game & Watch titles, including Donkey Kong and Mario Bros., which Mr. Yokoi helped to create alongside Shigeru Miyamoto. Nintendo began assigning its chief engineers to head their own divisions as the electronic industry boomed in the late seventies. Mr. Yokoi was appointed to the general manager of the Research and Development 1 (R&D1;) group. R&D1; consisted of 55 designers, programmers, and engineers. It was with this group that Mr. Yokoi came up with many new ideas for Nintendo as it entered into the video games market. Before Miyamoto got his own R&D; department in 1984, Gunpei Yokoi helped to produce many of his famous arcade games, such as Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and the original Mario Bros.. In 1985, Mr. Yokoi and his R&D; department were responsible for Kid Icarus, as well as the first title in one of Nintendo's longest running series, Metroid. Later in 1986, a part of Mr. Yokoi's R&D1; group branched off to form Intelligent Systems, and Mr. Yokoi later produced Battle Clash, Panel de Pon (scored by Masaya Kuzume), and Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu (scored by Yuka Tsujiyoko) alongside them. Mr. Yokoi was also responsible for hiring the man who would later become legendary for designing the Famicom/NES and Super Famicom/SNES- Masayuki Uemura. R&D1; was also responsible for the Robotic Operating Buddy (R.O.B.) accessory for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The remaining members of R&D1; remained with Mr. Yokoi, and they began developing what would become one of Nintendo's most profitable products, the Game Boy. Mr. Yokoi's perhaps most notable work in the hardware area was the Game Boy handheld, released in 1989. The Game Boy was a small handheld that appeared to be the successor to the Game & Watch games. However, the Game Boy played numerous games through cartridge-based gameplay, and presented games on a monochromatic screen (essentially black and green). In short, it had all the portability of the Game & Watch titles but with the cartridge interchanging capabilities of the Famicom. During its Game & Watch days, Nintendo had marketed the handhelds at an affordable price, while keeping a standard of high quality. One of the Game Boy's lasting strategies was to provide the user with an affordable product with a decent battery life. Georges Melies a trip to the moon in 1902 was a total game changer and from there we go to the first theatrical releases starting in 1920-2014 ... this portion of the montage is chronological. There are some notable films which are absent from the montage such as the Great Train Robbery (1903), The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906) and Birth of a Nation (1915). These and many others were either impossible to find or did not fit in with the creative direction of the montage. The Greenhouse Effect Archives; Greenhouse Effect have rocked their way into the top 100 All Time "Grunge", "Emo", and "Aternative" rock Categories at Myspace.com as of March 6, 2009 and the very interesting reading that is 'The G.e. archives" is the key. The band has apparently now settled on a possible 'in place' three piece 'line up' for a come-back show with Clark hagins on Guitar and lead vocals, Martin Silva (G.e's drummer in parts of 1991 and 92') on Drums, and new bassist Hagan Kelley replaces Rick Carmody. "People wanna see a show - they see us having fun and acting crazy on the internet from the old school but,..they wanna see us again now,...sure,..I would like to jam with Ted,...but I am prepared to move forward and jam with my nephew,.....the version of the band with Flipper will happen eventually ,..but due to distance and with him being way up in San Jose,...I have to 'move on' and just 'do this" says Clark Hagins. Hagan Kelly previously jammed with Hagins in 1997 and maybe parts of early 1998 as the band were preparing a 'comeback' rehearsing at Tubbys in Torrance - the home of Joe Groovey Dude. "Groovey Dude came into the room one day and he angrily asked us to leave and told us to turn down ,..that was bullshit and i lost all respect for him right then and there" says Haggins "We had some great jams there at Tubbys,..my nephew was going through a weird phase and we were kicking out all the songs from 'Going Legit' (G.e's 1991 album and one of their best),...we were kicking out some tight jams of BEN IS DEAD, STAR, BRANDY, WAITING FOR YOUR LOVE TO FAIL, Hey Negrita, Winers Diners, and maybe a version of 'WHITE BLACK' ,..we were gettin' it together but then,...it all ended,..my nephew hooked up with this Carlsbad chick that later on became his wife,...and then i went onto form the South Bay band 'Svengali' in 1998 with the late Mike Rimmey and my brother Paul,...there never was that late 1990's G.e. comeback but we had something good planned,..i remember that my nephew would show up to rehearsals playing his drums in only his underware !! He was getting good ,..but he was going through this weird 'Seattle' thing (Laughs)... In 2009, Greenhouse Effect use the crazy antics of their wild 'videos', great songs, and timeless weirdness, to captivate a world audience as they have driven themselves into the top of Myspace.com's All time music charts,..."We like myspace ,..it looks pro and it gives G.e. a great forum,...yeah we love our myspace profile ,..and we have a crowd out there that seems to take delight in joining in with us,...being in the tops of the Myspace charts means yer gonna get alot of new 'myspace friends' ,..it means alot to us,...Myspace has really helped Greenhouse Effect alot,...they have taken us to the top,...they are forcing radio stations to play 'Brandy',..if yer a college radio,..you have no choice but to play the biggest and best alternative rock and EMO songs and that means that they 'have to' play Greenhouse Effect - because we're big on the web,...and radio stations get listened to - if they play 'Brandy',..its like frickin' rancom !! They don't have a choice,...NET RADIO loves G.e. - we are literally 'making them'....- the internet is 'everything' now !! yeah,..we act goofey - but were laughing all the way to the bank now,...Me and my nephew know,...that its only a matter of time before this all goes like 'wooosh' and it will... We know eventually that we're gonna make some big money at this ,..... Haggins says that he giddily often fields call and emails from alot of people curious about G.e. ,..but also from many 'former members' of the band itself "there are 8 guys who appeared in G.e. at one time or another and I'm certain and sure that when 'Brandy" turns into a multi-million dollar extraveganza,..well...everybody is waitin' around for a piece of THAT PIE (LAUGHS)' says Higgins "Thats gonna be a big chunk of change,...well - atleast it 'should' be ,...as its one of the biggest songs on the net ever !!" Haggins says that punk rockers back in the South Bay have divided opinions about the large success of G.e. "Alot of people back in Redondo beach think that we're sell outs" says Haggins "but like i have written before,...i have left them all behind,...i want to do music like the Beatles 'Revolver' and the Beach boys Pet sounds and David Bowie,..i don't wanna be stuck in punk rock or heavy metal,...we always wanted to be weird like Peter Gabriel with Genesis or Neil Young's "After the Goldrush",..we wanna do classic rock,...we're not a punk or heavy metal band,..we hate styles and categorys - we defy them !!" The problem of being the guy who wrote classics like BEN IS DEAD, STAR, AND WAITING FOR YOUR LOVE TO FAIL does plague Haggins and his ambitions to craft pop masterpieces Brandy and It ain't easy and especially WHITE BLACK THANG...."well,..i admit that this is all confusing,...we have like these fm rockers blues people that love 'White black' and 'God's joke

6 acclaimed artists reveal a decisive moment in their life – a strong personal experience which became crucial in their development, and in shaping their work as artists. The German artist Jonathan Meese (b.1970) tells the story of how his life as an artist began on his 22nd birthday, when he asked his mother to buy him his first drawing materials. American video artist Bill Viola (b.1951) fell to the bottom of a lake when he was six years old, and discovered a place which seemed like paradise, and caused him to realize that "the real things are under the surface." This was the beginning of Violas fascination with water. American photographer Leigh Ledare (b.1976) talks about the Christmas he returned home to find his mother at the front door ”entirely naked.” It was his mothers late life sex rebellion which began the eight year long photographic project “Pretend You’re Actually Alive” (2000-2008). Finnish photographer Elina Brotherus (b.1972) tells the story behind the photograph ”Epilogue” (1999) which was the result of a break up. The photograph had to be done right away, capturing ”the decisive moment” she says. ”My mother overturned my paint box and threw everything and said that if you want to paint, don’t come back home!” Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (b.1929) explains how she fell out with her parents, who wanted her to get married, rather than spend her life painting. The Mercedes-Benz fashion campaign for the Autumn/Winter 2011 season is noble and dynamic in its contrasting monochromatic imagery. The acclaimed fashion photographer Craig McDean, in close collaboration with the British creative director David James, portrayed the new Mercedes-Benz CLS with supermodel Karolina Kurkova. True to the campaign’s theme, “Captivated”, the result is a spectacular fashion visual that will enchant the viewer with its beauty, dynamics and extravagance.   The key visual for the Autumn/Winter 2011 fashion campaign by Mercedes-Benz is equally powerful with its interplay of dynamic form and sensuality. The backdrop consists of staggered mirror panels, with the CLS and Karolina Kurkova in a striking black ensemble positioned in the foreground. The visual carries the distinct mark of prime stylist Marie-Amélie Sauvé, who describes her own style as “abstract sexy”. No colours are employed. Instead, the visual conveys its magical fascination through a dialogue of monochrome imagery. “Transforming the dynamic, athletic design of the new CLS into a powerful yet feminine fashion image is the task that Craig McDean and David James were asked to approach. The photo motif perfectly translates the car’s design features into the visual language of fashion by adopting the lines and surfaces of the CLS to create this final composition. Following the surreal interpretation of last season, we now enter a new avant-garde dimension with this campaign,” explains Anders Sundt Jensen, Vice President Brand Communication Mercedes-Benz Cars. Craig McDean’s long-standing passion for automobiles and his strong visual aesthetic made him a perfect candidate to shoot this particular key visual campaign. “When I look at a car, I’m initially obsessed with the design and its contours. They always hide a deeper meaning. In this case, I wanted to create a true fashion photograph. It shouldn’t portray the CLS statically as advertising photos often do. Instead, I wanted to capture both the car and Karolina in motion at the point of interaction.” Karolina Kurkova, one of the world's most beautiful women who only recently obtained her driving license, was fascinated by the new CLS from the start. “It’s a beautifully smooth and luxurious car that immediately appealed to me. It has these fascinating contours that I wanted to convey with my body language during today’s shooting. I can imagine myself behind the wheel of the Mercedes-Benz CLS. It fits my style. Since I recently got my driving license, I need to gain more experience driving. And I’m sure that would be great fun with the new CLS.” With its new “Captivated” key visual, Mercedes-Benz maintains their growing reputation for producing visionary fashion campaigns. The visual will launch at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin in January 2011. Back in 1997, I felt that I had shot enough quality work in the past seven years to start pursuing publishers about doing a book. I had saved up some money and thought I'd spend a year or so submitting my work to various publishers. Edition Stemmle had always been my favorite photography publisher. Their books were exceptionally well designed and were printed on the most luxurious paper. Their catalog of artists included many of my favorites, such as Ralph Gibson, Irina Ionesco, Nobuyoshi Araki, Kristin Capp, Ferit Kuyas, Lewis Hine, Tony Ward, Andreas H. Bitesnich, Skrebneski, and Andy Warhol. So it was them that I approached first. I don't remember what exactly I sent them but all I know is that a week later I got a fax from them saying that they were interested and wanted to see more work. So excitedly I sent them a huge box of prints. Within a few weeks, pre-production and design of the book started. Although based in Zurich, they arranged a meeting with me in New York at their US distributor's office. I remember laying all my images out on a huge conference table in a swanky room with floor-to-ceiling windows which looked out over the World Trade Center which was across the street. Because it was my first book, and I was star-struck by being with my favorite publisher, I pretty much let them have their way with the book in terms of image selection and editing. And to top things off, they were able to get Vicky Goldberg to write an intro for the book. For those of you who don't know her, she is the photography critic for the New York Times and is highly regarded for her essays and books about photography. "The Beauty of Fetish" was released in September of 1998 in separate English and German versions. It sold very well and actually became one of Stemmle's best-selling books. It even made New York Daily News Ten Best Photography Books of 1998 list. Because of the success of the book, two years later Stemmle wanted to do a new book but this time focusing on the work I had just shot after having moved to Los Angeles from Chicago a few years previous. Eventually Stemmle went bankrupt as a result of a domino effect when one of the world's largest independent book distributors went bankrupt and couldn't pay Stemmle all the money that was owed them. Of course that meant that us artists never got most of the royalties promised to us. In the end however, the prestige and validation of having been published by one of the most respected photography publishers was worth way more than money. Here are some words from In My Eyes' guitarist, Anthony Pappalardo: For the entire existence of In My Eyes there were always three words used to describe us that made us cringe: Youth Crew Revival. Most 'zines that were covering Snapcase and Chamberlain would mention we were "great at being a Youth Crew Revival band" and it drove me fucking insane. The Youth Crew was Youth of Today's crew, not a style of music and certainly not relevant to a band formed in 1997. We all loved Youth of Today but we weren't setting out to revive anything. That phrase always made me think of a bunch of kids in varsity jackets standing over a drawing of the Step Forwards record dude with wires hooked up to him like Weird Science. Suddenly he rises out of the pages of Boiling Point and He's Alive ... the Youth Crew had been revived! Let's all pose in the street a la We're Not In This Alone and bleach our hair! In My Eyes accomplished infinitely less than many of the bands that were our peers in Boston. From Bane and American Nightmare to Converge, Isis, Jejune and Piebald; we'd toured less, played less and never committed to the band full time but it didn't mean it wasn't our lives or that we weren't happy with what we had left behind. We weren't able to be a "full time band" and that made things fun. We had an outlet to pour ourselves into every weekend and it made even the smallest show special. We didn't revive the Youth Crew, we lived our crew. Some of us listened to Juvenile, while some listened to Stereolab. We could be found wasting our money on sneakers, jackets, unhealthy vegetarian food, gambling or video games. We combed the streets of Boston looking for fun, records and girls… girls were the hardest to come by. In My Eyes was our way of avoiding the September to June College Malaise that defines Boston. Initially we were a handful of kids crammed into the first floor of a poorly insulated Mission Hill apartment with a Subway table in the vinyl floored kitchen. By the end of the band our friends inhabited about 43% of the neighborhood, formed twenty thousand bands and record labels and we all found time to hang out on each other's porches and stoops no matter what was going on. In My Eyes was convinced to play a final show, as the band had run it's course. We were exhausted, broke, and all facing different directions while still being best friends. Matt Galle, Tim Mailloux and Ray Lemonie aka DHU were responsible for most of the all ages punk and hardcore shows in Boston at the time and they wouldn't let us go out with a whimper. They booked an all ages, $5.00 show in Haverhill, MA, where Ten Yard Fight had once played as well as 108, about 7 years prior. Haverhill was about ten miles from where I grew up. I spent my teen years there in coffee shops, grinding and sliding the curbs in the town's parking garage. It was part of the Merrimack Valley, an area responsible for Cave-In, Piebald, Converge, Ten Yard Fight and other notable bands. It was nice to end where I started. The show wasn't going to take place in Boston so we could have an all ages show with no barriers, without giving a cent to club owners that hated us the other 364 days of the calendar year. DHU asked me who I'd wanted on the bill; I remember asking if American Nightmare could play... they didn't and I'm not sure why but Wes sang the ending of Through The Motions which is part of this documentary. In viewing the video again I realized how much this song aspired to be a Moondog song though it's mid-paced tempo was modeled after Inside Out. I'm not sure why my memory is so sharp for some things and so vague for others but I'll run down the last time In My Eyes played together: • A few weeks prior we played a last show in Riverside County in California at the Showcase Theater. I liberated a pair of gold Air Max 97s from Niketown as an homage to Civ's obnoxious creepers at the last GB shows. • As In My Eyes was fading out, a lot of us noticed the focus on NYHC folk-lore and generally being "hard" in hardcore 2000. We purposely chose to cover A Time We'll Remember and Bottled Violence, two songs without mosh parts that are as energetic as any songs recorded to keep an emphasis on stage dives and sing-alongs... things we saw as the core of the band. • Friends from all over the world came, a lot of our friends hadn't been to a show in years or ever, some of them liked Limp Bizkit and others, House music. It was rad to have such a mix of personalities and backgrounds there in one place. • The show was $5.00; I'm not sure how many people paid but I know for a fact that no one I knew was asked for even a dollar. Clevo mentions there being 500+ kids there, I'm sure at least 200 were on the "guest list." A big part of what we do is to try to make all kinds of music engaging and accessible — and wouldn't it be great to invite anyone who wanted to come and sing in a world premiere by one of the most celebrated composers of our time? So Glass took a work he had first written for soprano and instruments as part of his 1997 3-D "digital opera" Monsters of Grace, and arranged it for soloist and eight-part chorus. And were very lucky indeed to team up with the Make Music NY Festival, member station WQXR and the Times Square Alliance to realize this project at one of the world's most iconic spots, the Crossroads of the World, Times Square. About 200 singers gathered to sing with the ebullient Kent Tritle, one of America's most accomplished and beloved choral conductors, and soprano soloist Rachel Rosales. (And a handful of singers were folks who had simply been walking by and were swept up in the moment.) On this sweltering day, the singers' mindful intention to gather in Times Square and its visceral result — all breath and sweat and palpable effort in the middle of glossy Times Square, with stifling heat, noise and a zillion blinking distractions — was just amazing and honestly quite moving. For his text, Glass selected words from the medieval Sufi Muslim poet Jalaluddin Rumi, as translated by Coleman Barks. In his poetry, Rumi urges the reader to break free of the constraints of daily life — to upend expectations and jettison traditional thinking in an unending quest to unite with the divine. "Here's the new rule," Rumi wrote. "Break the wineglass, and fall towards the glassblower's breath." And somehow — beautifully, magically and only briefly — this fleeting chorus became the heartbeat of Times Square.
