A noun (from Latin nōmen, literally meaning "name") is a word that functions as the name of some specific thing or set of things, such as living creatures, objects, places, actions, qualities, states of existence, or ideas.Linguistically, a noun is a member of a large, open part of speech whose members can occur as the main word in the subject of a clause, the object of a verb, or the object of a preposition.
Lexical categories (parts of speech) are defined in terms of the ways in which their members combine with other kinds of expressions. The syntactic rules for nouns differ from language to language. In English, nouns are those words which can occur with articles and attributive adjectives and can function as the head of a noun phrase.
Word classes (parts of speech) were described by Sanskrit grammarians from at least the 5th century BC. In Yāska's Nirukta, the noun (nāma) is one of the four main categories of words defined.
The Ancient Greek equivalent was ónoma (ὄνομα), referred to by Plato in the Cratylus dialog, and later listed as one of the eight parts of speech in The Art of Grammar, attributed to Dionysius Thrax (2nd century BC). The term used in Latin grammar was nōmen. All of these terms for "noun" were also words meaning "name". The English word noun is derived from the Latin term, through the Anglo-Norman noun.
Arctic Monkeys are an English rock band formed in 2002 in High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. The band consists of Alex Turner (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, lead guitar), Matt Helders (drums, backing vocals), Jamie Cook (lead guitar, rhythm guitar) and Nick O'Malley (bass, backing vocals). Former band member Andy Nicholson (bass guitar, backing vocals) left the band in 2006 shortly after their debut album was released.
They have released five studio albums: Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006), Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007), Humbug (2009), Suck It and See (2011) and AM (2013), as well as one live album, At the Apollo (2008). Their debut album is the fastest-selling debut album by a band in British chart history, and in 2013, Rolling Stone ranked it the 30th-greatest debut album of all time.
The band have won seven Brit Awards—winning both Best British Group and Best British Album three times, and have been nominated for three Grammy Awards. They also won the Mercury Prize in 2006 for their debut album, in addition to receiving nominations in 2007 and 2013. The band have headlined at the Glastonbury Festival twice, in 2007 and again in 2013.
"Fluorescent Adolescent" is a song by English indie rock band Arctic Monkeys. It was released as the second single from their second studio album Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007). It was released on 4 July 2007 in Japan and three days later in the United Kingdom. The song was written by Alex Turner and Johanna Bennett, Turner's girlfriend at the time, in a hotel room prior to the recording of Favourite Worst Nightmare.
"Fluorescent Adolescent" is a ballad about getting older and finding out that life isn't as fun anymore. It describes a woman who dreams of her youth while her current life is unsatisfying and boring. The song peaked at number five on the UK Singles Chart and was the 83rd best-selling song of 2007 in the United Kingdom. "Fluorescent Adolescent" is one of the band's most popular songs, and is frequently performed as a closer to their concerts.
The song has received a 9/10 rating from Planet Sound, becoming Arctic Monkeys' first single to do so since "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor".

In this video we explore the colorful science of fluorescence. A really cool way to play with fluorescence at home is get a blue or violet laser pointer and shine it into a dish or jar of water where you have added a drop of fluorescent highlighter fluid. You'll clearly see the beam as the solution fluoresces in its path. Now the common definition of fluorescent is something that glows a visible color when exposed to ultraviolet light. Fluorescence is actually much broader than that and you don't need ultraviolet light in particular. For example in the yellow fluorescent dye "rubrene" both violet and green lasers will activate it and glow yellow. This proves you don't always need ultraviolet light. But a red laser will not activate a yellow dye. Why is that? What's happening in fluore...
Introduction to fluorescent lamps: How it works, inventors, animations. The fluorescent light is the most prolific type of lamp in the world. For indoor lighting it remains the lowest cost efficient light source. Inventors include George Inman, Richard Thayer, Edmund Germer, Albert Hull, Ed Hammer, John Anderson. GE, Westinghouse, Sylvania, OSRAM, Philips all contributed to the fluorescent lamp. It uses two electrodes which send current through argon and mercury vapor to make UV light. The UV light strikes phosphors which convert the energy into visible light.
Animation shows the circuit of the first kind of fluorescent lamp called the preheat. See how the ballast and starting switch work to strike an arc in the lamp. See the timing of the AC power cycle and why the lamp flickers before it gets a good start. Model of lamp with and without a ballast. See the tungsten filaments warm up. To get the full description of how it works go to www.EdisonTechCenter.org/Fluorescent.html.
How to repair a fluorescent light with a faulty ballast. I replaced the old ballast with a Philips Advance ICN4P32N 120-277V 4 Lamp T8 Electronic Ballast that I purchased from Amazon for $18.50 or so. Video was taken with a HTC One and I used Lapse It Pro to make the time lapse portion. The editing was done with Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X6.

In this video we show how to make fluorescein, a strongly fluorescent chemical. Combine 166 mg of phthalic anhydride, 220mg of resorcinol and 3 drops of concentrated sulfuric acid. Heat to 200 degrees celsius for 5 minutes. The crude fluorescein produced is dissolved in dilute sodium hydroxide solution (300mg in 10mL of water). To demonstrate fluorescence a few drops of the solution are dropped into water under ultraviolet light.

You walk in
And you light up the room
You've been living... in a looking glass scene
Since you... were 17
I can't deny... you've made your move
With a heavy cup to spend the occasional army cup
(Pre-)
Brighter and brighter and brighter you burn
When you're in this mood there's no return
Life's a gamble, throw my dice
Every scandal has it's price
Brighter and brighter and brighter you burn
When you're in this mood there's no return
Incandescent
Incandescent
You walk in
And you light up the room
At midnight... it's time for business
But who... will bear witness?
To your beauty and ain
But how well you've played the game?
You've played the game, you've played the game
You've played the game, you've played the game
You've played the game, you've played the game
You've played the game, you've played the game
You've played the game
(Pre-)
Brighter and brighter and brighter you burn
When you're in this mood there's no return
Life's a gamble, throw my dice
Every scandal has it's price
Brighter and brighter and brighter you burn
When you're in this mood there's no return
