The famous beautiful city Chania is located on northern coast of western Crete, just by the bay at the base of peninsula Akrotiri. Chania is the 2nd largest city on Crete and used to be the capital city of the island till 1972. The very first settlement at place of nowadays Chania was ancient city called Kydonia. Later on, the Venetian city La Canea was founded there in the 13th century. The most of the preserved historical sights in Chania remain just from the period of Venetian domination despite that they had to face the following hard times of Turkish occupation and in modern history the 2nd World War. Venetian harbour with lighthouse and port promenade surrounded by Venetian houses is the main dominant of Chania. In the middle of the street leading from port further in the city, there is octagon shaped Venetian fountain. The old part of the city is surrounded by Venetian wall of the lenght about 3 km. There is also fortress called Firka at the eastern edge of harbour and of wall. Even earlier there were also Byzantine walls of which are some parts also still visible. Several minarets remain in the city from the period of Turkish occupation. One of them is by the port, just it is without the tower and inside is exposition of art gallery. Many churches are located all around the city. The best known for tourists is orthodox church Trimartyri in the historical centre. Some of the churches lost their original purpose and have currently different uses such as for example the church of Saint Francis', where is established the archeological museum. The 3 main museums that can be found in Chania are archeological, maritime and folklore. The impressive building, which has shape of cross is Old Chania Market, there are various shops inside, nowadays focused mainly on touristic items. A piece of green nature provided by the city park is favorite place for hiding from sunshine in the shadow of exotic huge sizes plants. There is also minizoo, where can be observed few animal species. Chania is very romantic city with many possibilities of accomodation, countless amount of restaurants, tavernas, cafes, bars, diverse shops and much more. The picturesque streets of old Chania absolutely invite to join for a walk, get amazed by the vintage expression, forget the presence and experience the feeling like if being back in past ages.
