The Battle of Cold Harbor was fought from May 31 to June 12, 1864, with the most significant fighting occurring on June 3. It was one of the final battles of Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign during the American Civil War, and is remembered as one of American history's bloodiest, most lopsided battles. Thousands of Union soldiers were killed or wounded in a hopeless frontal assault against the fortified positions of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's army.
On May 31, as Grant's army once again swung around the right flank of Lee's army, Union cavalry seized the crossroads of Old Cold Harbor, about 10 miles northeast of the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia, holding it against Confederate attacks until the Union infantry arrived. Both Grant and Lee, whose armies had suffered enormous casualties in the Overland Campaign, received reinforcements. On the evening of June 1, the Union VI Corps and XVIII Corps arrived and assaulted the Confederate works to the west of the crossroads with some success.
A civil war is an armed conflict within a nation.
The term "The Civil War" redirects here. See List of civil wars for a longer list of specific conflicts.

Civil war may also refer to:
How cold
When I woke up this morning
it was very cold.
How cold was it?
It was a freezing, sneezing
goose-bumpy, teeth-chattering,
can't-get-out-of-bed,
blankets-over-my-head
kind of cold
Cold refers to the condition or subjective perception of having low temperature, the absence of heat.
A lower bound to temperature is absolute zero, defined as 0 K on the Kelvin scale, an absolute thermodynamic temperature scale. This corresponds to −273.15 °C on the Celsius scale, −459.67 °F on the Fahrenheit scale, and 0 °R on the Rankine scale.
Since temperature relates to the thermal energy held by an object or a sample of matter, which is the kinetic energy of the random motion of the particle constituents of matter, an object will have less thermal energy when it is colder and more when it is hotter. If it were possible to cool a system to absolute zero, all motion of the particles in a sample of matter would cease and they would be at complete rest in this classical sense. The object would be described as having zero thermal energy. Microscopically in the description of quantum mechanics, however, matter still has zero-point energy even at absolute zero, because of the uncertainty principle.
A harbor or harbour (see spelling differences), or haven, is a body of water where ships, boats and barges seek shelter from stormy weather, or are stored for future use. Harbors and ports are often confused with each other. A port is a facility for loading and unloading vessels; ports are often located in harbors.
Harbors can be natural or artificial. An artificial harbor can have deliberately constructed breakwaters, sea walls, or jettys, or they can be constructed by dredging, which requires maintenance by further periodic dredging. An example of an artificial harbor is Long Beach Harbor, California, which was an array of salt marshes and tidal flats too shallow for modern merchant ships before it was first dredged in the early 20th century.
In contrast, a natural harbor is surrounded on several sides by prominences of land. Examples of natural harbors include Sydney Harbour, Australia and San Francisco Bay, California.
Artificial harbors are frequently built for use as ports. The oldest artificial harbor known is the Ancient Egyptian site at Wadi al-Jarf, on the Red Sea coast, which is at least 4500 years old (ca. 2600-2550 BC, reign of King Khufu). The largest artificially created harbor is Jebel Ali in Dubai. Other large and busy artificial harbors include:
Generally, a battle "is a conceptual component in the hierarchy of combat in warfare between two or more armed forces, or combatants. A war sometimes consists of many battles. Battles generally are well defined in duration, area, and force commitment.
Wars and military campaigns are guided by strategy, whereas battles take place on a level of planning and execution known as operational mobility. German strategist Carl von Clausewitz stated that "the employment of battles ... to achieve the object of war" was the essence of strategy.
The definition of a battle cannot be arrived at solely through the names of historical battles, many of which are misnomers. The word battle is a loanword in English from the Old French bataille, first attested in 1297, from Late Latin battualia, meaning "exercise of soldiers and gladiators in fighting and fencing", from Late Latin (taken from Germanic) battuere "beat", from which the English word battery is also derived via Middle English batri, and comes from the staged battles in the Colosseum in Rome that may have numbered 10,000 individuals.
The battle of cold harbor took place near the end of the civil war between General Robert E. Lee and Union General Grant, it was the bloodiest single engagement of the conflict.

The battle of Cold Harbor was one of the bloodiest battles in the 1864 Overland Campaign and the fourth major battle of Lee vs Grant. Grant was racing south to Richmond trying to force his way in. After side stepping Lee's Army of Northern Virginia after nearly being annihilated at North Anna, Grant underestimated Lee's resolve at Hold Harbor and tried to take Lee's army at a well dug in position. The maneuver failed and Grant once again sidestepped Lee and disappeared in the night only to make a lightening dash to Petersburg where a nearly year siege finally broke the Confederate lines to Richmond.

My first attempt on the Union side in this historical battle just added in the .78 patch update to UGCW. Grant's overland campaign was a bloody affair which included multiple destructive battles, but none were perhaps as costly or horrifying as the fight near the old Gaines' Mill battlefield in June of 1864. follow me on twitter at https://twitter.com/thehistoryguy25 or facebook at https://facebook.com/thehistoryguy25

The scene was chaotic and terrifying—successive lines mixing into pushing, shoving crowds as tens of thousands of men tried to stay alive in the open fields in front of the seething Southern breastworks. Grant suspended the offensive at noon, and would later claim to have “always regretted that the…assault was ever made.” The Union soldiers who fell in the assault of June 3rd were forced to lay upon the field...

A great combat simulation video demonstrating the capability of the US Military Long Range Anti Ship Missile against Russian navy ships. The Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) is a stealthy anti-ship cruise missile under development for the US Navy by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).[4] The LRASM is intended as a replacement for the US Navy's current anti-ship missile, the Harpoon, which has been in service since 1977. Various launch platform configurations are being evaluated. LRASM is anticipated to pioneer autonomous targeting capabilities for anti-ship missiles. The Navy was authorized by the Pentagon to put the LRASM into limited production as an operational weapon in February 2014 as an urgent capability stop-gap solution to address range and survivability p...

Richmond, Virginia, was at the heart of the Civil War, the most defining event in the history of the United States of America. As the industrial center and political capital of the Confederacy, Richmond became the prize over which two mighty American Armies contended in bloody battle from 1861 to 1865. Cannon boomed within earshot of the city. Its residents saw their loves transformed. Wartime Richmond, swollen by government, military, refugees, prisoners, and the wounded, lived with anxiety and hope. Landowners outside the city saw their farms converted into battlefields. Previously unknown placenames like Cold Harbor, Gaines' Mill, Malvern Hills, and New Market Heights attained national sognificance for the key battles that were fought there.
In which John Green teaches you about European Imperialism in the 19th century. European powers started to create colonial empires way back in the 16th century, but businesses really took off in the 19th century, especially in Asia and Africa. During the 1800s, European powers carved out spheres of influence in China, India, and pretty much all of Africa. While all of the major (and some minor) powers in Europe participated in this new imperialism, England was by far the most dominant, once able to claim that the "sun never set on the British Empire." Also, they went to war for the right to continue to sell opium to the people of China. Twice. John will teach you how these empires managed to leverage the advances of the Industrial Revolution to build vast, wealth-generating empires. As it...

shine a light through what's inside you
don't let it slip away
this painted canvas, hides the purpose
in the forest and the trees
just walk away from everything you are
let it go
the devils left you blind, to what's between the lines
and what you wanted
what are tears but, blood from the eyes
when they're penetrated
by the face of a man who's dreams cracked and faded
just walk away from everything you are
let it go
the devils left you blind, to what's between the lines
and what you wanted
same old story
you won't let go, you won't let GO!
cut the chord, turn out the lights
never look back
never look back
never look back
never look back
this gags been tied around your mouth
your words the blade, so talk it out
before the lights all burn out
this gags been tied around your mouth
your words the blade, so talk it out
before the lights all burn out
just walk away from everything you are
let it go
the devils left you blind, to what's between the lines
