The Cold War was a state of political and military tension after World War II between powers in the Western Bloc (the United States, its NATO allies and others) and powers in the Eastern Bloc (the Soviet Union and its allies in the Warsaw Pact).
Historians do not fully agree on the dates, but 1947–91 is common. The term "cold" is used because there was no large-scale fighting directly between the two sides, although there were major regional wars, known as proxy wars, supported by the two sides. The Cold War split the temporary wartime alliance against Nazi Germany, leaving the USSR and the US as two superpowers with profound economic and political differences: the former being a single-party Marxist–Leninist state operating a planned economy and controlled press and owning exclusively the right to establish and govern communities, and the latter being a capitalist state with generally free elections and press, which also granted freedom of expression and freedom of association to its citizens. A self-proclaimed neutral bloc arose with the Non-Aligned Movement founded by Egypt, India, Indonesia and Yugoslavia; this faction rejected association with either the US-led West or the Soviet-led East. The two superpowers never engaged directly in full-scale armed combat, but they were heavily armed in preparation for a possible all-out nuclear world war. Each side had a nuclear deterrent that deterred an attack by the other side, on the basis that such an attack would lead to total destruction of the attacker: the doctrine of mutually assured destruction (MAD). Aside from the development of the two sides' nuclear arsenals, and deployment of conventional military forces, the struggle for dominance was expressed via proxy wars around the globe, psychological warfare, massive propaganda campaigns and espionage, rivalry at sports events, and technological competitions such as the Space Race.
How cold
When I woke up this morning
it was very cold.
How cold was it?
It was a freezing, sneezing
goose-bumpy, teeth-chattering,
can't-get-out-of-bed,
blankets-over-my-head
kind of cold
Cold refers to the condition or subjective perception of having low temperature, the absence of heat.
A lower bound to temperature is absolute zero, defined as 0 K on the Kelvin scale, an absolute thermodynamic temperature scale. This corresponds to −273.15 °C on the Celsius scale, −459.67 °F on the Fahrenheit scale, and 0 °R on the Rankine scale.
Since temperature relates to the thermal energy held by an object or a sample of matter, which is the kinetic energy of the random motion of the particle constituents of matter, an object will have less thermal energy when it is colder and more when it is hotter. If it were possible to cool a system to absolute zero, all motion of the particles in a sample of matter would cease and they would be at complete rest in this classical sense. The object would be described as having zero thermal energy. Microscopically in the description of quantum mechanics, however, matter still has zero-point energy even at absolute zero, because of the uncertainty principle.
Nuclear may refer to:
Cold fusion is a hypothesized type of nuclear reaction that would occur at, or near, room temperature. This is compared with the "hot" fusion which takes place naturally within stars, under immense pressure and at temperatures of millions of degrees, and distinguished from muon-catalyzed fusion. There is currently no accepted theoretical model which would allow cold fusion to occur.
In 1989 Martin Fleischmann (then one of the world's leading electrochemists) and Stanley Pons reported that their apparatus had produced anomalous heat ("excess heat") of a magnitude they asserted would defy explanation except in terms of nuclear processes. They further reported measuring small amounts of nuclear reaction byproducts, including neutrons and tritium. The small tabletop experiment involved electrolysis of heavy water on the surface of a palladium (Pd) electrode. The reported results received wide media attention, and raised hopes of a cheap and abundant source of energy.
"Atomic Attack" is the fifteenth and penultimate installment of The Motorola Television Hour. Based upon the 1950 novel Shadow on the Hearth by Judith Merril, this teleplay covers the immediate aftermath of a nuclear attack on New York City from the perspective of a suburban family fifty miles from ground zero.

Cold fusion, hydrogen become deuterium then tritium + helium4. Its a new nuclear rection, this is not the whole process, you need a tokamak,a tor on which you will concentrate the fusion (with an electromagnetic field) in the center, as a small sun, it come to 120 ,000,000 c degree. Its been there since 1957,search on wikipedia. They have invested all the $$ in nuclear energy(fission) as you know it,by breaking the core of the most unstable atom we've found uranium. Now the physics still dont admit that reality, believ me,cauz they are ULTRA-CONSERVATIVE & you CANT make PROFIT of ENDLESS Energy, all it require is water. Its time to get to free energy..its up to us,people dont know nothing about this, its a controverse...;) bye bye oil cartel. check on my page:WEVE JUST FOUND THAT SALT+WATER...

The Oscar-Zero nuclear bunker in Cooperstown, North Dakota was one of many nuclear sites manned around the clock during the Cold War. Decommissioned in the 1990s, it is now a historical site, and CBS News got a look inside.
The nuclear arms race was central to the Cold War. Many feared where the Cold War was going with the belief that the more nuclear weapons you had, the more powerful you were. Both America and Russiamassively built up their stockpiles of nuclear weapons. The world greatly changed when USA exploded the H-bomb in 1952. This one bomb was smaller in size than the Hiroshima atomic bomb but 2500 times more powerful. The Russians produced an H-bomb in 1953 and the world became a much more dangerous place. However, it is possible that the sheer power of these weapons and the fear that they evoked, may have stopped a nuclear war. USA produced a bomber - the B52 - that could fly 6,000 miles and deliver a nuclear pay-load. Such a development required massive financial backing from the government - som...
Not sure of the history of this fall out shelter, but it is well built and solid. This would be the place to hide during a nuclear war. If I was going to build a do it yourself bunker, I would make it much like this one. This video is rather long but I wanted to show as many details as possible. The bunker is located in cottage country, far away from any city. The cottage was recently built, and many construction materials were left in here.

Created by the U.S. Government, "Survival Under Atomic Attack" explains the dangers of the atomic bomb, the effects of radiation and how to protect oneself if caught in the open or in the home. The film was made in the era before the hydrogen bomb made nuclear survival impossible. Survival Under Atomic Attack was also the title of an official United States government booklet released by the Civil Defense Office. Released at the onset of the Cold War era, the book and pamphlet were in line with rising fears that the Soviet Union would launch a nuclear attack against the United States, and outlined what to do in the event of an atomic attack. Four of the "myths" examined in the film are: Atomic Weapons Will Not Destroy The Earth Atomic bombs hold more death and destruction than man ever ...

This was built during WW2 and was later re-commissioned for use during the cold war as an underground nuclear fallout facility for use by the government, BBC and the MOD in the event of a nuclear attack on Britain. The radio tower would of been used to communicate with the outside world and any other survivors, some really scary stuff.

September 18, 1980 – Damascus Titan missile explosion, Little Rock AFB, Arkansas – At about 6:30 p.m., an airman conducting maintenance on a USAF Titan-II missile at Little Rock Air Force Base's Launch Complex 374-7 in Southside (Van Buren county), just north of Damascus, Arkansas, dropped a socket from a socket wrench, which fell about 80 feet (24 m) before hitting and piercing the skin on the rocket's first-stage fuel tank, causing it to leak. The area was evacuated. At about 3:00 a.m., on September 19, 1980, the hypergolic fuel exploded. The W53 warhead landed about 100 feet (30 m) from the launch complex's entry gate; its safety features operated correctly and prevented any loss of radioactive material. An Air Force airman was killed and the launch complex was destroyed

RAF Holmpton is a former Cold War era nuclear bunker that was built in the 1950s as an early warning radar station as part of the ROTOR Radar Defence Programme. Located just south of the village of Holmpton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, RAF Holmpton remained a part of the Defence Estate right up to 8 December 2014 when it was sold into private ownership after 62 years of military service. The site runs to about 36 acres (150,000 m2) and comprises a number of surface structures along with a secure 35,000 square feet (3,300 m2) command bunker which is about 100 feet (30 m) below ground. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Holmpton http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/sites/h/holmpton/ http://www.visitthebunker.com/ http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/sites/h/holmpton/index1.html http://...
"The Power of Decision" may be the first (and perhaps the only) U.S. government film depicting the Cold War nightmare of a U.S.-Soviet nuclear conflict. The U.S. Air Force produced it during 1956-1957 at the request of the Strategic Air Command. Unseen for years and made public for the first time by the National Security Archive, the film depicts the U.S. Air Force's implementation of war plan "Quick Strike" in response to a Soviet surprise attack against the United States and European and East Asian allies. By the end of the film, after the Air Force launches a massive bomber-missile "double-punch," millions of Americans, Russians, Europeans, and Japanese are dead.
Since the end of World War II, when the United States dropped the A-bomb on Hiroshima, Japan; and the advent of the Cold War between the world’s greatest powers, the USA and USSR, the threat of nuclear destruction has never seemed far away. Subscribe for more content http://bit.ly/PlanesTrainsAutomobilesSubscribe In the forty years the Cold War raged, both sides compiled massive arsenals of weapons, including atom bombs and guided missiles, as well as the methodology to deliver them. Although in recent times attempts have been made to slow or even stop nuclear proliferation, countries such as North Korea, China and Pakistan have continued to develop and test their own missiles. As a result, there are still enough weapons out there to render our planet uninhabitable. A frightening thoug...

This 1980 episode of Panorama, featuring a fresh-faced Jeremy Paxman, takes a look at the UK Government's preparations for the public in the event of a possible outbreak of Nuclear War. This pre-dates the seminal 'Threads' by 4 years, as well as a coming a couple of years earlier than 'QED: A Guide to Armageddon' Another little bit of fascinating Cold War history. A Day Called X is a dramatized Civil Defense documentary set in Portland, Oregon ("roughly the size of Hiroshima"), in which the entire city is evacuated in anticipation of a nuclear air raid, after Soviet bombers had been detected by radar stations to the north. The film opens with an overhead shot of then-mayor Terry Schrunk striding purposefully into the old underground Kelly Butte Civil Defense Center—a bunker-like structure built into a hillside. The film details the activation of the city's civil defense protocols and leads up to the moment before the attack (the ending is left intentionally unknown). The operations were run from the Kelly Butte Bunker, which was the EOC during the time. It was filmed in September 1957 and shown in December of that year. Apart from presenter/narrato...
UNITED STATES 12.06.2016 Army Multimedia & Visual Information Directorate Former SECDEF William Perry will discuss his recently published book, My Journey At The Nuclear Brink During the Cold War we maintained a powerful force of nuclear weapons with more than 10,000 strategic nuclear warheads deployed in a so-called triad: intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles and bombers armed with nuclear bombs and air-launched cruise missiles. Even with conservative estimates of expected attrition to this force, it was powerful enough to destroy the Soviet Union many times over. So it was considered to be an assured deterrent to a nuclear attack on the U.S. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/william-jperry/nuclear-catastrophe-risk_b_9019558.html

A chilling documentary that revealed the cold hard facts about nuclear war to an at-the-time lesser informed British public. If you enjoy this documentary you should also search for Threads which was released to UK around the same time as a guide to armageddon.
