That was a low blow on Jack Anderson’s part. Just because Spiro Angew was a corrupt politician is no reason to dig into his son’s personal life. He should have left him alone…unless he decided to run for office on an an anti-gay platform then he would have been fair game.
Trevor, i am in complete agreement with you! The irony of that story is that the Anderson staff member who researched that story was a rising star journalist named Brit Hume, yes that Brit Hume of Fox News. He argued with Anderson not to print the story for reasons like yours, but Anderson felt Agnew’s words against Nixon’s enemies (who can forget his alliterative “nattering nabobs of negativism” or “effete impudent snobs”) trumped the son’s right of privacy.
He told us this story while my friends and I were staying at his next door neighbor’s while we were waiting to march together in the largest anti-war march of the ’70s.
I started this site in response to the use of marriage equality as a wedge issue during the 2004 elections. At the same time politicians and political operators were working against equality they were also living their lives in the closet.
People are entitled to privacy and the exposure of someone's sexual orientation without their permission is unacceptable to me. Reporting on the hypocrisy of those who represent us in government? That's an entirely different matter.

I can see how this boomerangs back onto VP daddy Angew. It’s the natural course. Anderson was just the willing vehicle.
