Tav Falco's Panther Burns "Shadow Dancer" 1995

"Tav Falco was post modern when post modern wasn't cool. The singer-guitarist who has collaborated with filmmaker Kenneth Anger and rockabilly pionner Charlie Feathers, has spent most of the past two decades crafting a revisionist pop culture history - one that seamlessly fuses the aesthetics of Dean Martin and Jerry Lee Lewis" - David Sprague - Variety"...and MUSIC MAESTRO is the perfect way to end this album: first it’s like a 50’s movie and a lonely weary hunk dreaming of lost loves is surrounded by giggling girls and he asks the waiter for a drink w/ chaser “to chase the blues away”, then suddenly it’s like it’s just him and his piano and he’s nursing his broken heart in the bar night after night, but still so elegant and suave and undaunted and so contemporary and continental, like how Tom Waits would sound like if he’s a lot more handsome…
Then we hear again, for a second, the noise of the bar around him, he gets up and says good night to the waiter and tomorrow we know he’s ready for another one night stand… a short, beautiful song that captures the gorgeous cycle of melancholy and ill-fated amours that I guess love is all about, for some…" - Miss FTav Falco's Panther Burns:

SPOON - Hot Thoughts (2017)
Matador Records

http://www107.zippyshare.com/v/CoZNUEvV/file.html

So much is made of how consistent Spoon are that it's easy to overlook just how
much they change things up on nearly every album. On Hot Thoughts, the
differences aren't subtle: they bring together their twin fascinations with
structure and atmosphere with a rawness and sophistication evoked by the album
cover's watercolor skull. Songs such as "Pink Up" and the ghostly saxophone
reverie "Us" are downright lush. And while rhythm has always been vital to their
highly edited take on rock, Jim Eno's drumming is the star of Hot Thoughts. This
is especially true of the album's first few songs, which glide in on shimmying
grooves that almost sound like they're beat-matched. One of their strongest
albums in a while, Hot Thoughts is more proof that Spoon only get better at
introducing new ideas into their music, while sounding unmistakably like
themselves, as the years pass. -- Heather Phares (Allmusic)

Some months ago I shared four of Spoon's early albums (1998-2005) but since I
went on that long sabbatical they have unfortunately expired from Zippyshare. So
I offer them up again, this time without the booklet scans I usually include:

A Series of Sneaks (1998)
http://www107.zippyshare.com/v/0BkScHxS/file.html

Girls Can Tell (2001)
http://www107.zippyshare.com/v/RaifM7VU/file.html

Kill The Moonlight (2002)
http://www107.zippyshare.com/v/0Vlvj6Bb/file.html

Gimme Fiction (2005)
http://www107.zippyshare.com/v/rBeQSUID/file.html

It's been more than a decade since I've listened to anything new from Spoon so
when I noticed they had released a new album (their first since 2014) and that
they were back on Matador, I listened to a few snippets and then purchased Hot
Thoughts in mp3 format.
I am impressed by this album. Spoon went from a tight, minimalist pop sound on
their first albums to a more expanded sound, keeping their reliably great
songwriting and adding new, electronic textures. This is a band that I discovered
all by myself more than 10 years ago and I have to say that I like this new stuff
as much as their old. Enjoy! -- JohnnyDiego

- I can't listen to Bob Dylan's voice anymore. His voice is shot completely. But why couldn't he work in the studio with a band like Old Crow Medicine Show. He could sing the songs on demo, and he could be there when they interpret the music so that the song's intent stays intact. Then i would want to listen to his new albums. Do you think this is a good proposal?

I think Old Crow would jump at the chance to play with Dylan, Gyro. But I'm sure Bob doesn't particularly really want to do that type of music again, as he's shown us time and time again. He's old now and as so many artists before him do (starting with Nilsson in the 70s and moving through the likes of Rod Stewart), he has turned to the old American standards of Tin Pan Alley and esteemed writer duos consisting of a lyricist and a music composer. I like those tunes and although I'm not saying Bob is in better voice than he was 30 years ago as walk is saying above, I like the new stuff mainly because I am familiar with the old tunes and I am familiar with everything Bob Dylan has done.

Searnav said...

Gyro,

I bought every album by Dylan since his first LP in 1962. But although I'm a fan, my opinion is that he should have stopped singing 20 years ago. Just like Chuck Berry should have stopped playing guitar 20 years ago. And that's from a big fan of both artists.

Groover's Choice said...

walk:

In the late 80s Bob Dylan actually sounded like Bob Dylan, today he doesn't sound like the old crow anymore(as he did in the late 80s), but he definitely don't sound like Bob Dylan today either. I don't know how many concerts/bootlegs I got with him (700 maybe), but the live recordings with him from the last 10 years is very crappy, just because of the "new" way he sings.

I also think the albums he made after Time Out Of Mind is so boring, a couple of songs is ok maybe, Beyond Here Lies Nothing for exaple). The later years crooner-albums is totaly awful. One Of Dylans big mistakes since Time Out Of Mind is that he isn't interesting in doin great records with great producers, just doin lazy uninspired muttering rock-blues. I personally think it's very sad to see how he totaly fucked up his career and destroyed his persona the last 20 years by just being ignorant and act like an old clown.

I'm not a fan of the so-called "Great American Songbook". I'm not dumb enough to doubt the craftsmanship involved, it's just that it's too great a cultural barrier for me to transcend.
As a result, I have no interest in Dylan's current phase.
My primary response to Gyro's comment, however, is to be reminded that in 1970 or so I couldn't understand why Elvis didn't enlist the Rolling Stones to back him on a tough sounding rock/blues album.
Later I realized that it just wasn't his MO.

OkieRambler said...

I kinda like Dylan's voice now, he reminds me of Charlie Patton. That said, I can't imagine listening to Patton sing anything from the Great American Songbook.

My two cents on the recent Dylan recordings of the Great American Songbook:

I was horrified when I first heard that Dylan was going to record jazz standards. As a guy who plays those standards with my own band, and often sings them, I really hoped Dylan wouldn't go there. But he did.

When I actually heard these recordings, soon after each release, I found that Dylan, his sidemen, and the arrangements offered a whole new way of hearing those songs. The Great American Songbook is saturated with glamour. We know these songs from the greatest jazz vocalists of all time, backed by the best of best, and frequently with full orchestras. What if those songs are sung not by Sinatra, Billie Holiday, or Ella Fitzgerald, but by the most world weary voice imaginable? Does that bring a fresh perspective to these overly familiar tunes and their schmaltzy lyrics? I would argue that it does, and I'm finding these albums interesting. Frank sang 'em better, but Dylan brings something to the party. Unless the very idea of Dylan singing Hoagy makes you cringe you might find a pass through each album peculiarly rewarding.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

Cheers!
