Subreddit Rules

These rules are not a legal treatise, they are a guide to how the moderators will moderate:

  • Submissions with altered or sensationalised headlines may be removed. You may resubmit these without an altered headline: use the headline of the article, or the opening sentence ("lede"), or the title provided by the 'suggested title' feature on the submissions page. Do not write your own title for the submission.

  • Image macros, memes, upside down jokes, and other low content submissions will be removed. Please submit them to AusMemes.

  • Submissions must contain content that is about Australia or Australians. Submissions which editorialise a link between a current issue and something happening elsewhere in the world may be removed.

  • Threats, personal insults/abuse, ad hominem attacks, offensive comments or submissions, and harassment of other users of this subreddit will be removed; infringers may be banned. Play the ball, not the player.

  • Novelty accounts, accounts used for trolling, accounts which mimic other users, and bots will be banned.

  • Submissions made for the purpose of creating subreddit drama will be removed.

  • No advertising. Please contact the moderators about submitting causes if you're a long term /r/australia redditor.

  • No spam. Please read the Reddit-wide guidelines for what constitutes spam as well as the rules around self-promotion. NOTE: as of 5/12/2014 Spam rules have altered slightly. Please read this for more information.

  • Self.posts about politics, political speculation, political questions (etc) will be removed unless they meet the quality standards set out in the subreddit feature wiki. All other political submissions should be directed to one of the politics subreddits.

  • Paywalled articles, empty self-posts, duplicate submissions, and submissions made via URL shorteners may be removed.

  • Brigading within, to, or from this subreddit, will result in banning.

  • Use the 'report' button if you see any submissions which violate the rules (above).

  • Try to be civil and constructive in conversation with other redditors: personal attacks do not improve the conversation.

  • Do not resubmit material already on the 'hot' page or on the first 'new' page, this means reading the subreddit before blindly submitting!

  • If your only interest in /r/australia is to submit political articles, then please use one of the political subreddits created specifically for this type of discussion.

FAQ

What is a self.post?

  • "Self.post" is another name for text post, and is one of two types of submissions that can be made to reddit, the other being a link. The content of a text post does not have any bearing on whether it is a self.post, all text posts are self.posts.

I saw someone trolling the subreddit or being abusive so I left an abusive or offensive reply in return. Somehow I was the one who got banned. What gives?

  • If you see someone abusing another user, trolling, or otherwise breaking the rules, please use the report button (remember to add a reason so we know what we're looking for) and the moderators will take appropriate action. If you choose to engage with a rule-breaking user and break the subreddit rules yourself, you will also have action taken against you, even if you didn't start it. Also remember that you don't know who was banned other than yourself - in all likelihood both or any users involved will also have received a ban.
