A 69-year-old woman has been stabbed to death at a house in Stafford Heights.
Acting Inspector Catherine Jones said police were called to the property at Remick Street about 9.20am on Saturday, and found the woman dead at the scene.
The acting inspector said the call to emergency services was made by the woman's husband. The 68-year-old man was assisting police with their inquiries and a police spokesman said charges were expected to be laid.
Acting Inspector Jones said police had not been previously called to the address of the couple and no one else was assisting with the investigation.
She added the couple's daughter was overseas, and police had not yet been able to reach her.
The death was being treated as a homicide, but details of the confrontation were unknown.
A neighbour, who didn't want to be named, said he was "shocked" and saddened to learn about the stabbing.
"Everyone in this street knows everyone, and this kind of thing doesn't happen here," he said.
"It's a very quiet, nice street; the majority of people who live here are retirees."
Another neighbour said she was shaken by the news.
"I feel sick, it has rocked my boat," she said.
