Tonkin Highway closed as bushfire burns out of control

Police are questioning a man in relation to a bushfire burning in Perth's south which has forced the closure of Tonkin Highway in both directions.

Main Roads confirmed diversions off the highway were in place between Albany Highway and Ranford Road at 2.30pm.

Fire closes Tonkin Highway in both directions

Tonkin Highway still closed both directions from Albany Highway to Ranford Rd due to a fire at Champion Lakes. Vision: Nine News Perth.

Champion Drive is also closed from Tonkin Highway to Lake Road. 

Traffic is flowing but is expected to become congested during peak hour. 

The closure comes as fire crews battle a blaze burning in Champion Lakes near the intersection of Champion Drive and Tonkin Highway. 

Gosnells Police officers are investigating the cause of the fire and a 44-year-old man of no fixed address is currently assisting them with their inquiries.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued an alert warning for people in an area bounded by Southern River Road, Corfield Street, Albany Highway, Westfield Road and Ranford Road. 

"There is a lot of smoke in the area," DFES said. 

"Be extremely careful when driving through the area, turn your headlights on and drive slowly."

The bushfire is moving slowly but is out-of-control and unpredictable. 

It was reported around 11am with 52 hectares burnt by 2pm.

More than 60 fire-fighters are working to bring the blaze under control. 

It's cause is unknown.
