The Women's Tennis Association (WTA), founded in 1973 by Billie Jean King, is the principal organizing body of women's professional tennis. It governs the WTA Tour which is the worldwide professional tennis tour for women. Its counterpart organization in the men's professional game is the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
The Women's Tennis Association was founded in the month of June 1973, but traces its origins to the inaugural Virginia Slims tournament, arranged by Gladys Heldman, and held on 23 September 1970 at the Houston Racquet Club in Houston, Texas. Rosie Casals won this first event. The WTA's corporate headquarters is in St. Petersburg, Florida, with its European headquarters in London and its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Beijing.
The Open Era, allowing professional players to compete alongside amateurs, began in 1968. The first open tournament was the British Hard Court Championships in Bournemouth. At the first Open Wimbledon the prize fund difference was 2.5:1 in favour of men. Billie Jean King won £750 for taking the title while Rod Laver won £2,000. The total purses of both competitions were £14,800 for men and £5,680 for women. Confusion also reigned as no one knew how many open tournaments there were supposed to be. The tournaments that did not want to provide prize money eventually faded out of the calendar, including the U.S. Eastern Grass Court circuit with stops at Merion Cricket Club and Essex county club.

The WTA Tour Championships, currently known as the WTA Finals, is a tennis tournament played annually at the end of the season for the top-ranked players on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour. The month, city and number of players has changed since the first edition in 1972. Since 2003 there have been eight singles players divided into two round robin groups, and four doubles teams.
The WTA Tour Championships is generally considered to be the fifth most prestigious event on the women's tour after the four Grand Slam tournaments. It also has the largest prize money and ranking points after the Grand Slams.
The most successful player is Martina Navratilova who won 8 singles titles and 12 doubles titles.
The championships were held for the first time in October 1972 in Boca Raton, Florida (USA) as a climax event at the end of a series of tournaments sponsored by Virginia Slims, called the Virginia Slims Circuit. From 1972 to 1974, the event was held in October, before switching to March from 1975 until 1986. The WTA then decided to adopt a January–November playing season, and so the event was switched to being held at the end of each year. As a consequence, there were two championships held in 1986.
The 2016 WTA Finals is an upcoming women's tennis tournament at Singapore. It will be the 46th edition of the singles event and the 40th edition of the doubles competition. The tournament will be contested by eight singles players and eight doubles teams.
The 2016 WTA Finals will take place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium the week of October 24, 2016, and will be the 46th edition of the event. The tournament is run by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) as part of the 2016 WTA Tour. Singapore is now the ninth city to host the WTA Finals since its inauguration in 1972 and will host the event for at least five years. The event will also hold two exhibition tournaments, WTA Rising Stars Invitational and the WTA Legends Event.
In singles, point totals are calculated by combining point totals from sixteen tournaments. Of these sixteen tournaments, a player's results from the four Grand Slam events, the four Premier Mandatory tournaments, and the best results from two Premier 5 tournaments must be included.
In doubles, point totals are calculated by any combination of eleven tournaments throughout the year. Unlike in singles, this combination does not need to include results from the Grand Slams or Premier-level tournaments.
Maria Yuryevna Sharapova (Russian: Мари́я Ю́рьевна Шара́пова; IPA: [mɐˈrʲijə ˈjʉrʲjɪvnə ʂɐˈrapəvə]; born 19 April 1987) is a Russian professional tennis player, who is ranked world No. 6 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). A United States resident since 1994, Sharapova has competed on the WTA tour since 2001. She has been ranked world No. 1 in singles by the WTA on five separate occasions, for a total of 21 weeks. She is one of ten women, and the only Russian, to hold the career Grand Slam. She is also an Olympic medalist, having earned silver for Russia in women's singles at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Sharapova became the world No. 1 for the first time on August 22, 2005, at the age of 18, and last held the ranking for the fifth time for four weeks from June 11, 2012, to July 8, 2012. Her 35 singles titles and five Grand Slam titles—two at the French Open and one each at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open—rank third among active players, behind Serena and Venus Williams. She won the year-ending WTA Finals in her debut in 2004. She has also won three doubles titles.
Serena Williams suffered the worst defeat of her professional career when she was pounded 6-0, 6-2 by Simona Ha-lep in her previous match. The world number one was in no mood to let that happen again when she took on Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in Singapore on Thursday. Steffis 2nd titel on WTA-Tour.
Doesn't come down when she calls, "It's time for breakfast"
Momma can't get down those halls fast enough to see
Glass is sprayed across the floor from the broken window
She can't breathe anymore, can't deny what we know
They're gonna find you, just believe
You're not a person, you're a disease
All these lives that you've been taking
Deep inside, my heart is breaking
Broken homes from separation
Don't you know it's violation?
It's so wrong, but you'll see
Never gonna let you take my world from me
The world outside these walls may know you're breathing
But you ain't coming in, but you ain't coming in
Posters hung on building walls
Of missing faces
Months go by without the cause
The clues or traces
They're gonna find you, just believe
You're not a person, you're a disease
All these lives that you've been taking
Deep inside, my heart is breaking
Broken homes from separation
Don't you know it's violation?
It's so wrong, but you'll see
Never gonna let you take my world from me
The world outside these walls may know you're breathing
But you ain't coming in
Shed the light on all the ones
Who never thought they would become
A father, mother asking
Why this world can be so cold?
Doesn't come down when she calls
"It's time for breakfast"
The memories begin to fall
She asks, "When will I be free?"
All these lives that you've been taking
Deep inside, my heart is breaking
Broken homes from separation
Don't you know it's violation?
It's so wrong, but you'll see
Never gonna let you take my world from me
The world outside these walls may know you're breathing
But you ain't coming in
All these lives that you've been taking
Deep inside, my heart is breaking
