The Band was a Canadian-American roots rock group, originally consisting of Rick Danko (bass guitar, double bass, fiddle, trombone, vocals), Levon Helm (drums, mandolin, vocals), Garth Hudson (keyboards, saxophones, trumpet), Richard Manuel (piano, baritone, drums, vocals) and Robbie Robertson (guitar, percussion, vocals). The members of the Band first came together as they joined rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins's backing group, the Hawks, one by one between 1958 and 1963.
In 1964, they separated from Hawkins, after which they toured and released a few singles as Levon and the Hawks and the Canadian Squires. The next year, Bob Dylan hired them for his U.S. tour in 1965 and world tour in 1966. Following the 1966 tour, the group moved with Dylan to Saugerties, New York, where they made the informal 1967 recordings that became The Basement Tapes, which forged the basis for their 1968 debut album, Music from Big Pink. Because they were always "the band" to various frontmen, Helm said the name "The Band" worked well when the group came into its own. The group began performing as the Band in 1968 and went on to release ten studio albums. Dylan continued to collaborate with the Band over the course of their career, including a joint 1974 tour.

"The Weight" is a song originally by the Canadian-American group The Band that was released as Capitol Records single 2269 in 1968 and on the group's debut album Music from Big Pink. Written by Band member Robbie Robertson, the song is about a visitor's experiences in a town mentioned in the lyric's first line as Nazareth. "The Weight" has significantly influenced American popular music, having been listed as #41 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time published in 2004.Pitchfork Media named it the 13th best song of the Sixties, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame named it one of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.PBS, which broadcast performances of the song in "Ramble at the Ryman" (2011), "Austin City Limits" (2012), and "Quick Hits" (2012), describes it as "a masterpiece of Biblical allusions, enigmatic lines and iconic characters" and notes its enduring popularity as "an essential part of the American songbook."
The Last Waltz was a concert by the Canadian-American rock group the Band, held on American Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. The Last Waltz was advertised as the Band's "farewell concert appearance," and the concert saw the Band joined by more than a dozen special guests, including Bob Dylan, Paul Butterfield, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Ringo Starr, Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Wood, Neil Diamond, Bobby Charles, The Staple Singers, and Eric Clapton. The musical director for the concert was the Band's original record producer, John Simon.
The event was filmed by director Martin Scorsese and made into a documentary of the same name, released in 1978. Jonathan Taplin, who was the Band's tour manager from 1969 to 1972 and later produced Scorsese's film Mean Streets, suggested that Scorsese would be the ideal director for the project and introduced Robbie Robertson and Scorsese. Taplin was the Executive Producer of The Last Waltz. The film features concert performances, intermittent song renditions shot on a studio soundstage, and interviews by Scorsese with members of the Band. A triple-LP soundtrack recording, produced by Simon and Rob Fraboni, was issued in 1978. The film was released on DVD in 2002 as was a four-CD box set of the concert and related studio recordings.

http://www.playingforchange.com/episodes/32 - Whenever the Playing For Change Band takes the stage, there is always a tremendous amount of love and energy in the air. For this very special performance it was even more palpable, as the band was joined by many of our friends featured in our various Songs Around the World: Tula's amazing vocals, Roberto Luti playing the National steel slide guitar, Francois Viguie on the bongos, Stefano Tomaselli on the sax, Venkat playing the tablas, and the beautiful choir vocals of Sinamuva. This performance served as a powerful milestone in the evolution of Playing For Change. Seeing so many talented musicians from all different cultures and walks of life united on stage for this very special night was a physical manifestation of our mission: to conne...

Live Titles Show for Playgrounds International Digital Arts Festival 2011. Playgrounds Festival asked us to create a title sequence for their 2011 edition. The brief was basically this: please make the titles for Playgrounds 2011 but do it in such a way that it's more than just a video - it needs to be a 'you-should-have-been-there' moment. Together with Playgrounds we came up with the idea of a live show wherein the speakers at the festival -without knowing beforehand- would perform their own titles. We can safely say this performance/ video is one of the weirdest and most stressfull things we did so far. We're really happy with the end result and the fact that everybody, from audience and speakers to our janitors seemed to enjoy these crazy 5 minutes. THANKS! Leon, Joris, Fons, Heer...

The Scottish band Mogwai performs an incandescent show in front of a stunned crowd. As if time stood still, the audience is transported along by musical waves, both poetic and violent. 'Burning' dives into this wild sensual flow. Directors Vincent Moon and Nathanaël Le Scouarnec guide us into a dream where there is no tomorrow. This is a black and white experience of the senses carved by the raw emotion of this pioneering band that doesn't need any words to touch the heart of its listeners. Layered and innovative, the movie has its finger firmly on their pulse, a sonic adventure between hope and rebellion. A lifetime of feelings in just one night. Stage Fright is the third studio album by Canadian-American group The Band released in 1970. Much more of a rock album than its predecessors, it was a departure from their previous two efforts in that its tone was darker and featured less of the harmony vocal blend that had been a centerpiece of those two albums. It also included the last two recordings by The Band of new songs credited to pianist Richard Manuel; both were co-written with guitarist Robbie Robertson, who would continue to be the group's dominant lyricist until the group disbanded in 1976. Nonetheless, the tradition of switching instruments that had begun on the previous album continued here, with each musician contributing instrumental parts on at least two different instruments. The booklet alludes to the fact that Levon H...

Guillermo Galindo's adaptation of John Cage Variations II performed by a Mariachi Band is the first installment of an experimental documentary by Jen Cohen which follows the process of bringing this controversial piece to the stage of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art John Cage's 100 birthday celebration. “Cage opened the door to all possibilities..." David Bernstein Mills College music theory professor and author. Guillermo Galindo's idea of having Cage’s Variations II performed by a mariachi band is both a personal homage to his music and an act of psychomagic and self healing. It was also a great opportunity to appease two seemingly irreconcilable worlds that are an integral part of his own musical universe. The process of becoming a...
The U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band rock ensemble, Touch n' Go is playing concerts at multiple venues here throughout the duration of African Partnership Flight Angola 2014. African Partnership Flight is a collaborative learning environment designed to help the U.S. and regional partner air forces in Africa work together more effectively. With more than 20 Zambian and 35 U.S. participants, it is also the largest U.S. military exercise in Angola in the last nine years. Many Angolan citizens are skeptical of military interests in the region and the band can help ease tensions that may exist. "When Angola became independent in 1975, it became a communist regime country, and the United States used to support the formal rebels with the weapons and the money," said Phil Nelo, U.S. Embassy Lu...

I had met up with a good friend tonight at a local pub and although I had gone to the bathroom before heading out I decided that I wouldn't go to the toilet for the duration of the evening. Now to begin with this wasn't a problem and we had drunk 3 pints each without myself feeling the need to empty my bladder or use the bathroom. There was a good local band playing in the pub as well which contributed to the atmosphere and we were really enjoying ourselves. As we ordered a 4th pint each my friend told me that he would have to leave soon in order to catch the train home (he lives about a 20 minute train ride from me). This was probably just as well as mid way through my 4th pint I felt a distinct urge to go the toilet and I knew before long that due to the amount of beer I was consuming I ...

NFD ‘Waking The Dead’ NFD release their full album follow-up to the 2013 mini-album ‘Reformations’. It’s their first full-length album since 2006 and features Cradle Of Filth guitarist James McIlroy, Fields of the Nephilim’s Tony Pettitt, amongst others. NFD are a London and now part LA-based hybrid Goth/Rock band formed by singer, guitarist and songwriter Peter ‘Bob’ White just over 10 years ago out of the ashes of The Nefilim and Sensorium, by teaming up with Simon Rippin (Sensorium/Nefilim) and founding Fields of the Nephilim member Tony Pettitt. Long serving and integral member Chris Milden maintains rhythm guitar duties while his Lahanya bandmate Luca Mazzucconi (Drums) & Cradle Of Filth’s James Mcilroy (Lead Guitar) both of whom joined the ranks in 2009 complete a formidable li...
Music from the greatest 3/4 perspective isomorphic RPG of all time, Ultima 8: Pagan. Built from the remains of horribly broken MIDI files from a horribly broken ZIP archive and brought to epic orchestral life using Garage Band '08 (4.1.2). Quick note: Yeah, I'm aware of the stop-glitch in the lower choir's second burst. It's a realtime rendering problem that doesn't appear in the final master. GB does this some times with long-duration virtual instruments. :(
"I'm just going to play another one about prison." I'm not going to get caught up on this opening quote from Ceschi but I think it is somewhat important to mention that the past four years of events (enlighten yourself) in his personal life have inadvertently affected his music, and his record label, Fake Four Inc. But with that said, everything about him when we met up at The Echo last month before his show reflected nothing but positivity, from news of an LP release just around the corner to his humbling demeanor were all true testaments of his ability to surpass adversity, and even strive in its wake. At this point as if to even laugh at the fucking people that tried to drag him down. Much of that strength without a doubt stems from the unconditional support that he has from his fam...

If you say you're the ring finger on my stone
Well I say I'm a kite with a key
If you say that you are unsure of things
Well I'm not accepting defeat
Are we strong enough
Is it good enough
Am I brave enough
For the both of us
I will sing you songs
Even though you can't put 'em on your finger
I'll never be a diamond mine, I'm just a singer
I will sing you songs
Wishing my words carried on as long as a stone
On a band of gold
You're sleepwalking through the daylight
How else am I supposed to follow a dream
And now you say I can't wait on you to connect these hands
But I'm still trying to reach
So are we strong enough
Is it good enough
You pray hard enough
For the both of us
I will sing you songs
Even though you can't put 'em on your finger
I'll never be a diamond mine, I'm just a singer
I will sing you songs
Wishing my words carried on as long as a stone
On a band of gold
'Cause I'm just a rolling stone in a band on the road
I know words don't mean
Much on their own
But what I sing to you
Is worth more than a stone
I will sing you songs
Even though you can't put 'em on your finger
I'll never be a diamond mine, I'm just a singer
I will sing you songs
Wishing my words carried on as long as a stone
On a band of gold
'Cause I'm just a rolling stone in a band on the road
You said you want a stone
On a band of gold
What you got is a rolling stone
In a band on the road
Yeah I'm just a rolling stone in a band on the road
I haven't seen the sun in days
Man, it's getting to me
Well that's our industry
I lost my happy thoughts
Caught up in a tree
Flying's harder for me now
And kiss my ass you dream
I hope you're hearing me
No one's bet on you quite like I did
It's taken everything I've got
To keep myself on the road
I don't wanna drive no more
I am a stubborn bull
I am a caveman
A cheap tattoo
Gone from black to blue
So I don't wanna hear it from you
Never gonna be a spaceman
Sitting on my tin can
Never come back
I spend my afternoons
Making masterpieces
People would later understand
Well damn you wishing well
You should've told me
I bought dreams you wouldn't sell
It's taken everything I've god
To keep my hands from my face
I don't wanna cry no more
I found dangers in
Acting out
Dreams never meant
To be carried out
Oh, but I am the stubborn bull
Yeah, I am a caveman
A cheap tattoo
Fading from black to blue
So I don't wanna hear it from you
