A model village is a type of mostly self-contained community, built from the late 18th century onwards by landowners and industrialists to house their workers. Although the villages are located close to the workplace, they are generally physically separated from them and often consist of relatively high quality housing, with integrated community amenities and attractive physical environments. "Model" is used in the sense of an ideal to which other developments could aspire.
The term model village was first used by the Victorians to describe the new settlements created on the rural estates of the landed gentry in the 18th century. As landowners sought to improve their estates for aesthetic reasons, new landscapes were created and the cottages of the poor were demolished and rebuilt out of sight of their country house vistas. New villages were created at Nuneham Courtenay when the village was rebuilt as plain brick dwellings either side of the main road, at Milton Abbas the village was moved and rebuilt in a rustic style and Blaise Hamlet near Bath had individually designed buildings, some with thatched roofs.

The first of three videos from our weekend down at Torquay, over the 14th to the 16th November 2014. This video is of our usual visit to Babbacombe Model Village on Saturday 15th Novemeber. This year there has been a number of new additions and changes to the site, including a new harbor side village scene. Hope you enjoy!

Filmed, copyright and edited by Tim Dunn. bek@timdunn.com It's a 10 scale mile model garden railway of 1/32 scale, in a 1/12 scale miniature village. The line was started circa 1929 and has been updated continuously for 80 years. We strapped a camera to the front of one of the engines and sent it off - we've added some subtitles so you can see what you're passing. Model railways rock. The huge model railway has evolved since those early years, from Bassett-Lowke LNER and GWR outline stock through to modern image British Rail - when at one time, class 47, class 37, Hymek, western class 53, intercity 125 and ...
Global Model Village collects together the international works of Slinkachu, the London-based artist who as part of his 'Little People Project' has been abandoning tiny model people on the mean streets of the world since 2006. Documented through photography, these little dramas of hope and tragedy, loneliness and humour somehow get to the heart of what it means to be human; to be alone among millions of other people, all experiencing the particular melancholy and magic of life in the big city. We filmed Slinkachu creating one of his pieces in Paris. We hope you enjoy this behind the scenes insight into the street artists work.
On 27 June 2009 Marianne Jansen, Dick Hoefsloot and Aunt Ethel Wright visited this wonderful model village at Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire. Especially the model railway remains a highly interesting attraction. A full HD (1920xd1080) video can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWzMD1nt4HI
An update on my visit there on 17 January 2016 last year after which I uploaded a 3 part video.
We walk around the model village on a quiet day and get a good view in spite of the rain.

Upon returning home from our Christmas holiday in Devon, we visit the Babbacombe Model Village located next to Torquay. This is an almost walk-round of the entire model village (I had to skip a few items out because the weather at one point during our visit was too bad). But features all the main landmarks in the village including the farm, beach, villages of Mockington and Merrivale, the City, the Castle (with dragon), the windmill and more.
