South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.
African dance refers mainly to the dance of Sub-Saharan Africa, and more appropriately African dances because of the many cultural differences in musical and movement styles. These dances must be viewed in close connection with Sub-Saharan African music traditions and Bantu cultivation of rhythm. African dance utilizes the concept of polyrhythm as well as total body articulation.
Dances teach social patterns and values and help people work, mature, praise or criticize members of the community while celebrating festivals and funerals, competing, reciting history, proverbs and poetry; and to encounter gods. African dances are largely participatory, with spectators being part of the performance. With the exception of some spiritual, religious or initiation dances, there are traditionally no barriers between dancers and onlookers. Even ritual dances often have a time when spectators participate.
There are no singular definitions of African dance: Africa, a continent three times the size of the United States, is ethnically and culturally the most diverse on the planet. Though similar themes may be found throughout dances across the many countries and landscapes, each has its own history, language, song, background, and purpose and cannot be translated to another dance of the same culture much less another dance from somewhere else on the continent.
Cape Town (Afrikaans: Kaapstad [ˈkɑːpstɐt]; Xhosa: Ikapa) is a city in South Africa. It ranks third among the most populous urban areas in South Africa, after Johannesburg and Durban, and has roughly the same population as the Durban Metropolitan Area. It is also the provincial capital and primate city of the Western Cape. It is the southernmost city on the African continent.
As the seat of the National Parliament it is also the legislative capital of the country. It forms part of the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality. The city is famous for its harbour, for its natural setting in the Cape Floristic Region, as well as for such well-known landmarks as Table Mountain and Cape Point. As of 2014, it is the 10th most populous city in Africa and home to 64% of the Western Cape's population. It is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, reflecting its role as a major destination for immigrants and expatriates to South Africa. The city was named the World Design Capital for 2014 by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design. In 2014, Cape Town was named the best place in the world to visit by both The New York Times and The Telegraph.
I decided to take this dance class spontaniously and I'm so glad that I came!
September, 27, 2016 the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) in conjunction with Transnet operated a special test train from Johannesburg to Cape Town. The objective of the exercise was to thoroughly test the new 22E as a long distance passenger locomotive, a purpose for which it wasn't initially designed. The Class 22E is a dual voltage, 6200HP locomotive with co'co' wheel arrangement can easily handle such long distant trains single handed. This would also eliminate the need to change locomotives while traversing different voltage zones. The train consisted of 21 newly refurbished mainline coaches and two locomotives. In the lead is the test subject, Class 22E, number 22-053 with GE diesel-electric number 44-041 following in second position. The 22E was designed for usage wit...

I had the good fortune to spend ten weeks in South Africa in 1989 when steam still worked some regular goods traffic. The running shed at Springs 50 klms east of Johannesburg had a number of 15f's who worked daily goods - one of which was 15 klms south to the industrial town Nigel. These scenes show these over worked and under repaired engines as they fulfilled their last call to duty. Within months the shed was closed. Five days a week in the early morning a train would make the journey to spend the whole day shunting and return late in the afternoon. Note the sound of one engine with just three exhaust beats!

Hello! Welcome to this south African Airways review! This past August I had the amazing opportunity to visit Southern Africa with a few friends, and I had an absolutely amazing experience. For the outbound leg, I flew UA from Seattle to Washington, where I caught this flight. I booked an economy ticket and used miles to upgrade, which I was lucky to do because I was told by a UA agent SAA is very stingy about awards for UA customers (GRU-JNB was always open, though). This was the flight: SAA210, departing Washington 17:40 arriving in Johannesburg 16:30+1 day which breaks down as: SAA210 departing Washington 17:40 arriving Accra 7:40+1 day SAA210 departing Accra 8:40 arriving in Johannesburg 16:30 I was both surprised and disappointed by this SAA flight in the opposite areas I expected....
The video is like an introduction to the next (few) series I am currently working on: Because of rapid railway modernization in South Africa, these old mainline electric locomotives are to be extinct. This video is a combination of clips shot at Worcester, Matjiesfontein and an old clip shot at Boksburg East Station by Nixops. All (images) used in this video are of My own. Enjoy!
During Albert Torres' Cape Town visit in October 2012 AllOutSalsa.com took him to Khayelitsha to watch an African Dance Class conducted by Cape Town based Dance Instructor, Director and Choreographer Bheki Ndlovu of Suede Productions. Albert Torres immediately saw the untapped potential of the children that took part in Bheki Ndlovu's class and was excited about the possibility of showcasing these children's talent at the Los Angeles Salsa Festival in May 2013. Albert Torres has provided a platform for the children from Khayelitsha to represent South Africa for the very first time at the Los Angeles Salsa Festival held in May 2013. Bheki Ndlovu will choreograph the showcase that the children will perform at this historic event. For more information and to contirbute to the cause visit http...
