Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as "Washington", "the District", or simply "D.C.", is the capital of the United States. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast. The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress and the District is therefore not a part of any U.S. state.
The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the pre-existing settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria. Named in honor of George Washington, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the District.
Washington had an estimated population of 672,228 as of July 2015. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than one million during the workweek. The Washington metropolitan area, of which the District is a part, has a population of over 6 million, the seventh-largest metropolitan statistical area in the country.

But there are also a lot of ways you can make a misstep that has an irrevocable impact on your trip. So with that in mind, here are a few things NOT to do while visiting Washington, D.C. 1. Don’t Go During the Summer It’s hot, muggy, and packed with tourists trying to squeeze in a vacation before their kids head back to school. It's worth it to take your kids out of school early for a few days. Trust me, there’s more than enough educational opportunities in D.C. to balance out a few missed days. 2. Don’t Drive Washington D.C.’s metro line is big, clean, and extremely extensive. Anything and everything you could possibly want to reach is about three blocks away from a metro stop (ma...

We travelled to Mt. Washington in the company of a tenacious blizzard that coated the resort and surrounding area in over 20cm of fresh snow. The next morning, we woke to clear skies and sunshine that has yet be absent from our long days on the mountain. The combination of fresh snow and clear skies are the dream conditions that all skiers chase and we were lucky enough to stumble upon it this week at Mt. Washington.

Sometimes a simple twist of fate turns a good idea into an indispensable idea. With Washington State Tourism, this happened in an uncanny way. Having already faced steep budget cuts, a marketing plan was conceived to feature Washington tourism's greatest asset, the state's residents. The call to action: "If we all invite one person to visit Washington State, we can help create 20,000 jobs! So Share Your Washington!" This quirky and memorable campaign drove traffic to a website for residents to send invitations, learn why tourism matters, and sign up for sweepstakes offering free trips and discounts. Everything was ready for launch when things really headed south. The Washington State Tourism office was defunded and closed, making Washington the only state in the U.S without an organized ...

With its futuristic skyline and sprawling network of streets, subway lines, and highways, Shanghai represents not just China’s unbridled dynamism, but also the rapidly maturing global economy. The bustling city of Shanghai, however, holds a further, complex and equally exhilarating narrative nestled at the feet of its towering skyscrapers. ‘Walk in Shanghai’ tells the story of the lively, multifaceted and above all else, very human experience unfolding at the street level of this massive city. To guide you through the streetscape is JT Singh. As he leads the viewer on his curious adventure through central Shanghai, he glances around corners, weaves through crowds, and with a barely perceptible pause here or an impulsive turn there, stumbles into the unhinged entropy that flows through the...

Given Donald Trump’s four-point plan to cut taxes, reduce regulation, unleash the energy sector with low prices, and eliminate the trade deficit from his first day in the White House, he appealed to many small business owners. Trump’s vows to bring jobs back from overseas and promises to dismantle health care and business regulations allowed him to differentiate him as an attractive choice. Peter Navarro, one of Trump’s economic policy advisors, claimed that the lag in entrepreneurship and successful small businesses started with government restrictions. Trump articulated that it was most important to focus on growing GDP to 3.5 percent through deregulation. For small business owners, Trump’s attitude toward the Regulations from the Executives in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act was promisin...
Sustainable Business - Wealth from Waste Documentary on how business is creating a circular economy Businesses around the globe produce nearly as much waste as they do product -- almost 110 million tons annually in the US alone. Washington State spent more than 500 million dollars on waste disposal, recycling, and composting in 2009. But what is the real cost to business and the community? "Unwasted" is a look at businesses and organizations in and around the Puget Sound who are leading the way toward a less wasteful, more profitable and environmentally sustainable society. Did you know that a staggering 320 tons of gold and 7500 tons of silver are used in the production of PC's cell phone, tablets and other electronic devices each year. Eventually all of this will end up as waste add...

During 2014, I was fortunate enough to undertake a semester abroad at Washington State University, in America’s Pacific Northwest. Studying Health and Physical Education, the world-class academics and sporting culture provided an incredible experience, which I will forever cherish. The town of Pullman was an infectiously happy and kind place. The pride that each student and staff member had in being a Washington State Cougar made for a tight knit college community. Creating an entire new life for myself abroad is by far the most rewarding thing I have ever done. From developing life-long friendships, to volunteering in local schools, watching college football, sharing Thanksgiving and Christmas with friends, and exploring the diverse landscapes of Washington State and Canada, studying ...
For the past few years astronomer Don Winget has been using the Z Machine, the world's largest x-ray generator, to create white dwarf "star stuff" here on earth. When he put a photograph of the Z Machine up on the projector in his Astronomy 301 course, it inspired fine arts student Leah Flippen to begin a painting of the same name. In this video Winget and Flippen talk about the machine, the painting, and the interplay between science and art. "In 1969, a group of black and Puerto Rican students occupied City College demanding the integration of CUNY, which at the time had an overwhelmingly white student body. The occupation spread to other CUNY campuses, forcing the Board of Trustees to implement a ground-breaking new admissions policy." Such occupations also occurred in the 1980s and 2000s. It's that time again. As graduate Film students at Hunter College in New York, we're very excited to see how the spreading Occupy Wall Street movement is giving new momentum to the militant protest culture of Cuny (City University, NYC). We filmed the second General Assembly at Hunter College, and the first "Occupy Cuny" teach-in at Washington Square Park on October 21st, 2011. There is no pain Jesus can't feel
No hurt He can not heal
All things work according to His perfect will
No matter what you're going through
Remember God is using You
For the battle is not yours
It's the Lord's
There's no sadness Jesus can't feel
And there is no sorrow
that He can not heal
For all things work
according to the Master's holy will
No matter what you're going through
Remember that God is only using You
For the battle is not yours
It's the Lord's
It's the Lord's
Yes It's the Lord's
Hold your head up high
Don't you fright
It's the Lord's
It's the Lord's
Yes It's the Lord's
No matter what
You're going through
Remember that God
Only wants to use you
For the battle is not yours
It's the Lord's
No matter what
You happen to go through right now
Remember that in the midst of it all
God only wants to use you
No matter what you're going through
For the battle is not yours
It's the Lord's
No matter what it is
That you're going through
Hold your head up, stick your chest out
And remember He's using you
No matter what you're going through
God is only using you
For this battle is not yours alone
This battle is not yours, no
You can not handle it all by yourself
No, no, no, no, no, no
It's not yours
This battle is not yours
It's the Lord's, not yours
This battle is not yours
The Lord is the only one who can fight it
He wants to use you as His vessel
So be open to Him
It's not yours
No It's not yours
It's the Lord's, not yours
The battle is not your's
It's the Lord's
Hallelujah
yeah!
