Lasso - Lasso'd

New full-length from the Kalamazoo, MI country-psych-folkers. Even with a higher-fi and fuller sound, Lasso are still able to take you away to a barren land and leave you for dead. A mix of tunes for the saloon and tunes for your thirsting and hopeless crawl toward a distant mirage. Released on CD/cassette by Double Phelix, and available through bandcamp.

Dead People - Swamp Gays

Scuzzy psych garage punk from New Orleans. This 4 track EP is the only thing posted on their bandcamp, but they've just released a new 7" on Windian Records with a cassette version through Dirty Pillows Records that you're definitely going to want to purchase after hearing this EP.

The Obligatory Cripples - Dinosaurs

Originally named Obligatory Niggers, these Warsaw, Poland cripples (now relocated to London) dish out care-free punk tunes on garage/surf platter. Great stuff. This debut 8 track EP is soon to be released on cassette by the newly formed Polish label Bad Indian Recordings, so keep an eye out on their bandcamp.

Plant Magic Man - When We Were Trying to Decide If We Were the Same or Not EP

According to their aptly tagged bandcamp page, Plant Magic Man is an americana, folktronica, hypnagogic pop project from Los Angeles. This 3 track EP is from late last year, but they've released a total of 6 EPs over the last 3 years (all free downloads on bandcamp), and Ill at Ease, a great debut full-length cassette that is not free to share, but is well worth the purchase. Check it all out here.

Shape Breaker - No Fun

Dan recently forwarded me a ton of backlogged submissions that we've been getting, and Shape Breaker stuck out like a sore thumb. Maybe it was the MBV trollin' artwork, or maybe it was because everything else he sent me sounded like Gin Blossoms covering Camper Van Beethoven. Either way, I've been listening to No Fun a lot lately. The record is far from perfect-- these guys do seem to get lost in their own lo-fi aesthetic from time to time. Still, Shape Breaker's noisy punk rock works more often than not, and they even pepper in some keyboards from time to time to spice things up. I think there's a ton of potential here and I look forward to hearing more from them.

The Weeds - AKA The Lollipop Shoppe

Recently resurrected this one after a lengthy listening hiatus. Still so good. 60s psych garage. If you aren't familiar with The Weeds, The Lollipop Shoppe, or anything Fred Cole-related, get on it.

Lakookala - Songs for ZeMean

Lakookala is the drum-heavy avant-garde solo effort of Nicole Ranalli of Hollywood, California. This 5 track debut EP is a primal take on the singer/songwriter genre with a raw quality that invites your undivided attention. Her breathy vocals and pained intonations, which bellow from behind her drumset, are emphasized by the overall stripped-down instrumentation. Songs for ZeMean is available on limited edition 10" pink vinyl with hand screen-printed jacket. Only 300 pressed. Grab it at bandcamp.

VIDEO: Lil Daggers - Dead Golden Girls

We first introduced you to Lil Daggers last year with their King Corpse 7". They've since released a full length LP on Limited Fan Fare, with a UK press coming December 5th on Song, by Toad Records. "Dead Golden Girls"is the follow-up single to the equally awesome "Dada Brown," which I just realized I forgot to post back when they sent it to us (sorry dudes).

The Family Stoned - Don't Be Above Me

Out of the fogs of Olympia, Washington, Don't Be Above Me is a mixed bag of punk, blues, psych, and country. The blaring guitar on "High Time Woman" and slowed down version of Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot" stand out on this 5 track EP. Grab the cassette from Wild Animal Kingdom.

Narrow Sparrow - Synthworks

Free EP released yesterday of Joe Meek-influenced pop space ballads out of Chicago. Vocally, I was reminded of Heatmiser (who I hadn't thought about in a long time). There's some moments on here that would do the Meekster proud.

Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor - Spectra Spirit

New full-length from the Detroit-ish psych troupe. Heavy psych with a little southern soul, and certainly a step up from their self-titled record we posted a while back. Pick up a translucent yellow LP from New Fortune Records, and if you're on the East Coast make sure to catch them in the next few weeks. They've also been posting venue bathroom reviews while on their current tour. Check those out on Youtube. I'll do my best to crash their Arlington or Norfolk bathroom reviews.

Car Seat Headrest - 5

Solo lo-fi bedroom indie pop out of Williamsburg, VA. Personal but very accessible, with some vocal hooks and lyrical quirks I haven't been able to shake off over the last few days. This one could even get an honorable mention at the end of the year. This kid's already 5 albums deep, all of which are free via his bandcamp.

The Men represent everything good about rock n' roll. They make no apologies and pull no punches. This live set recorded back in August is a fantastic snapshot of what makes them so great. Apache Dropout - s/t LP + Shot Down b/w Sister Burnout 7"

The A-side of this one has been available for free on their bandcamp since earlier this year, but I just now got around to listening to this LP in its entirety. Acidic 60/70s psychedelic garage throwback greatness out of Bloomington, Indiana. West Coast fuzz meets a heavy 13th Floor Elevators influence. A strong contender for our end of the year list. Only 13 bones over at Family Vineyard Records. They also released a 7"a few months ago that requires your attention. Order it @ Trouble In Mind.

Dead Skeletons - Dead Magick

This much anticipated double LP is finally just over the horizon. Digital format came out in May, but if you aren't familiar with the band, it's time to get excited. Icelandic four piece (2 of which are current Brian Jonestown Massacre collaborators) that creates/conceives/births a fully-realized auditory experience. An altered state of consciousness. The vocals haunt, the rhythms churn. An absolutely essential purchase when the vinyl drops on 11/11/11. Pre-order it through Cargo Records.

Zorch - Cosmic Gloss / E.M.F.

Not sure why I didn't post this when we got the original submission in early August, but I was pleased to get a friendly reminder email a few days ago. Sometimes I need some prodding. Zorch is an Austin experimental noise duo that creates ethereal brain candy that has already grabbed the attention of Altered Zones, NPR, and Paste. There are moments in each of these 2 tracks that will bring to mind Battles, Animal Collective, and modern Boredoms. "E.M.F." is pretty killer around the 2 minute mark. The sold-out cassette was limited to 100 copies. Check out their awesomely mind-numbing video for their 2009 demo track below.

Pow Wows - Nightmare Soda

I remember these guys dropping their demo in our shoutbox a while back, and although it was good, there was just something about that didn't catch my ear. Well, it sounds like the Toronto foursome has greatly improved their sound with their debut, Nightmare Soda. Put on your tightest pair of pants, smoke some cigs, drink some beers, and get hip. LP out on Get Hip Recordings

Mit Hamine - Pagojet

While I was record shopping a few weeks back I was approached by dude who seemed pretty desperate to sell the store's final copy of his band's record. Red marble vinyl with hand drawn cover art in black crayon and blue pen. He said it was only $7, they made experimental pop, and name-dropped Sonic Youth, so I said why the fuck not and decided to help the kid out. I was pretty surprised when I gave this a spin when I got home. Pagojet reminds me of some of the earliest demos from bands like Of Montreal, Circulatory System, The Sunshine Fix, Olivia Tremor Control mixed with the slacker pop vocals of bands like Pavement, Beulah, and early Beck. There's definitely a few rough patches, and some of the tracks don't feel fully realized, but it's safe to say there's loads of potential here. You don't hear very many records like this anymore. "Alligator", "It's Your Head", and "Mambo Sack Seed" are a few of the highlights. You can snag a name your price download or an LP with original artwork for $10 shipped at their bandcamp.

VIDEO: Hear Hums - Shrines

With their upcoming third album, Opens, Hear Hums will be dropping lyrics entirely in hopes of creating a more intrinsic experience for us listeners, and although "Shrines" is the only track released thus far, it seems they will be successful. Opens should drop before the end of the year, so keep your eyes and ears peeled.

The You Are Minez - Having Your Heart Broken Means Once Having Had Somebody to Love

Stripped-down retro pop goodness from Calgary, Alberta. Head bobbing rhythms, summer harmonies, and just enough instrumental and vocal quirks to warrant many more listens. Had "Slice of Heaven" and this fucking song stuck in my head all day.

Lasso - The Return of Lasso

Incredibly refreshing lofi country music out of Kalamazoo, MI. Layers of reverb and haunting vocals give this a psychedelic vibe that seems pretty hard to come across within such a streamlined genre. Cassette (edition of 100) is out on Kzoo label Already Dead Tapes, which is nearing its first music festival The Already Dead Family Reunion on September 10th. Only $5 and the first 50 attendees get a free cassette. Be there.

Phalangius - The Cambridge Library Murders

One of the more interesting records I've come across in last couple of months, The Cambridge Library Murders sounds like the soundtrack to a lost 70's giallo flick. Phalangius is actually a DJ who operates under 20 or so different monikers. I'm not terribly familiar with his work, but as far as I can tell this was a one-off effort. If you're a fan of prog rock horror soundtrack icons Goblin or 70/80's horror films in general, you owe it to yourself to check this album out.

Jesuslesfilles - Une Belle Table

First heard these guys when they sent us their split with The Peelies a few months back, but I've been meaning to give this release from last year an actual post since then. Really been into this one. French Canadian pop/indie/garage that's filled to the brim with infectious vocal hooks.
