Major Dolby - Major Dolby EP

Heavily influenced by film soundtracks from the 1960s, this French duo utilizes handclaps, organ, and fuzzed out guitar riffs to create Pulp Fiction/Kill Bill-worthy instrumental tracks that'll get your Vespa-riding, vintage apparel-wearing, cigarette-smoking ass shaking. Four track 7" on French label Kizmiaz Records. Merci to Mickael for the submission.

DTH - Young Heart Sounds

Another solid and personal release from this New Orleans pop-collage artist. Using recordings of friends, family, and various events, this record is an attempt to "immortalize" his experiences. The results sound like a drone version of The Books. If you're into this one and didn't check out his previous effort, we posted I Hope I Can Feel Something Like That Some Day in March of last year. Thanks to Chinquapin Records for sending this one our way.

VIDEO: White Laces - Spirituals

This 12" EP we posted back in September should be dropping any day now on Shdwply Records/Whole Ghost. Pretty sure you need a little more Richmond, VA fuzzy indie whammy bar tunage in your life.

Milk Music - Beyond Living 12"

I've been eagerly anticipating this release for awhile now, and it certainly was worth the wait. Old Dinosaur Jr riffs meets early Replacements attitude tossed into a blender. You probably won't hear a better pure rock n' roll record this year. No gimmicks, no regard for trends, just great songs. My only complaint? Just six tracks means it's over too soon. Download this shit immediately and then go buy copies for yourself and everyone you know so these guys can keep touring and record a full length.

Rival Tribes - Tiger Print

"Battle surf"/post-punk/psychedelic trio out of Ithaca, NY. This 6 track EP squeezes a good amount of kickass in a short period of time. Sprightly rhythms, beachside guitar/vocals, competent bass. Keep an eye on their bandcamp for upcoming shows and physical releases.

Ty Segall/Thee Oh Sees - Bruise Cruise Vol. 1

This is already all over blogland, but I figured I'd throw it up here because I support the shit out of the Bruise Cruise and the accompanying 4 volume 7" series from the participating bands (each of which you're surely to see here). Both tracks are solid, as expected, although I was pretty surprised by the vocalessness of the Oh Sees track (after giving my copy a spin, I've discovered this is a bad rip, and there actually are vocals, but haven't come across a good rip yet). 800 copies pressed. Insound's still got some left.

VIDEO: Ablehearts - Get It

"Ablehearts is the work of sound and video artist Thomas Arsenault, who fashions his wares on the picturesque coast of the East River.

"Get It", a sultry warning for ambitious lovers, comes on the (digital) b-side of Ablehearts "A Name / Get It" single released in October. The video affectionately borrows footage from "The Swimmer" and reminds us that this bitter winter cold won't last forever.

Grab the single on iTunes or get the DELUXE download via Shinkoyo, which includes videos for both jams and those high quality 320kbps MP3s to treat your eyes and ears right..."

Bold Ones - Open Your Mouth 7"

I've been on a search recently for the first handful of releases on HoZac from back in 2007/2008, many of which seem impossible to track down online. These 4 tracks straddle the line between punk and no holds barred rock n roll with singalong guy/girl vocals guaranteed to get your booty shaking with a drink in each hand. This is the Chicago foursome's sole release from 2008, and I believe they're now defunct.

Treasure Hunt - Clutty Putty EP + Heavens EP

Treasure Hunt is the moniker of Dallas, TX experimental pop-collage artist Myles Dunhill, who was kind enough to us his first two releases under his newly formed label, Slyme Records. Densely layered "high frequency synths and garbage-shit beats" fitting for a clichéd LSD trip. A lying on your back in the middle of a grassy field, watching the clouds pass, blowing dandelions into the wind kind of trip. With a flowy skirt on, if that's your thing. Some recognizable samples scattered throughout, such as the Limahl's - The NeverEnding Story theme (check out his hair. I have this 45 btw) and the Super Mario Brothers 3 falling with wand in hand music in the track "Car Bed".

VIDEO: Encounters - Feathers

"Encounters are a group based in London formed in the autumn of 2008CE. Eric Breslauer and Memo Guerra (exiles from Israel and Mexico, respectively) met in spring 2004CE while both were doing a degree in sound engineering and music production. They soon formed a partnership as a production duo. Guerra's partner, Akkia Neko soon joined him in London and expressed her desire to start a musical project of their own. The three of them began playing the London circuit as a live electronics group garnering a modest following, however, the group wanted to expand their sound. A fourth member was required. Memo met Laura Anderson when he took a job at an independent record distribution company where Anderson was an accountant. When he learned she had a drum kit and was a fan of the Silver Apples and Neu!, he gave her a CD-R with music he'd been working on. She soon joined the group. The sound and style they produced together was a bold mixture of two extremes: from the straightest pop sensibilities to the harshest experimental noise, thus showcasing the four members' vast artistic influences and musical backgrounds. They each bring in their own interests, musically channeling their fascination with sound, film, literature, photography, art and design. Encounters boast a very diverse and interesting hybrid in their ever-evolving repertoire. All four members exchange instruments and roles within the group, making music with electronic, analogue and acoustic instruments. Anything that makes a sound is welcome in their arsenal. The foursome intend to keep changing, experimenting with sound and to defy genre and category altogether within the complex lexicon of popular music. The only rule is: there are no rules..."

Bob Seger & the Last Heard - Heavy Music 7" + East Side Story 7"

Did a little record shopping in my parents' basement in Michigan over the holidays and came across these Bob Seger 45s. Before he was turning pages like a rock with his old time rock n roll, Seger was rocking the high-energy Detroit city sound alongside The Stooges and MC5 in the late 60s. Definitely worth a listen.

The N.E.C. - Is

Got an email from Banter Media & Management back in August suggesting that I check out this record, aaannnddd I didn't until just recently. This is really good psychedelic/shoegaze that doesn't need to hide behind the obligatory wall of sound. The 12" LP on clear vinyl (it can be heard, but not seen) is only $10 through Double Phantom Records, and has been added to my absurdly long list of records to buy.

Pipsqueak! - Official Debut

It's pretty pathetic that I snagged this from Royal Jelly SIX MONTHS AGO, and I'm just giving it a proper listen right now. One man project out of California. Jangly southern garage with some wonderfully snotty vocals. Black Lips/Strange Boysish. Looks like the always reliable Burger Records still has some of those cassettes available.

Hear Hums - Psyche Cycles

A very well-produced psych record with an incredible amount of audio fuckery. Many of these tracks could hold their own even without the occasional vocals. Animal Collective meets Elephant 6 collective, and you might even be re-evaluating your tops of 2010 list after giving this a complete listen. Give this band your $5, and grab their cassette (limited to 100) from Crash Symbols.

Tumbleweave - Demon Squeeze

Nerd-synth duo out of West Palm Beach, Florida / New York, NY. Sounds like a more energetic and overdriven version of Lightning Bolt side project, Wizardzz. 6 tracks clocking in at just under 9 minutes, you can pick up the limited edition CDR and/or name your own price MP3 download from their bandcamp.

Evols - s/t

"Making use of strictly organized compositions or through improvised music with random shapes, evols present their debut album. The dividing lines between genres are nonexistent, and the electric guitar is the single uniting factor among the elements."

Contentment-inducing indie rock that's bound to get some attention from Pitchfork/Altered Zones, as well as the entire blogosphere. Thanks to Vitor for the submission.
