In the heart of downtown Memphis with three blocks of nightclubs, restaurants and retail shops, the Beale Street entertainment district is a melting pot of delta blues, jazz, rock 'n' roll, R&B; and gospel. With cold beer and hot music, Beale Street is one of the coolest places in Memphis.
Beale originally was home to traders and merchants that used the convenient location to move goods along the Mississippi River. By the 1860s, many traveling musicians began performing on Beale and over the next few decades, Beale began to flourish. The Orpheum Theatre, “The South’s Finest Theatre” was added in 1890 and in 1899 Robert Church (the first black millionaire in the south who purchased the land around Beale) created Church Park at the corner of 4th Street and Beale. Church wanted to give musicians a place to gather. At that point, Beale slowly began transforming into a recreational and social center, where folks could unite and listen to music.
In the early 1900’s a young man by the name of W. C. Handy made his mark on the city by creating hit songs like “Blues on Beale Street” and “Mr. Crump” (for a local mayoral candidate). Handy’s influence ran deep and from the 1920s to the 1940s, other blues and jazz legends like Albert King, Louis Armstrong, Memphis Minnie, Muddy Waters, and B.B. King (B.B. stands for Blues Boy) all performed on Beale. Their influence created a style known as Memphis Blues.
In 1966, Beale Street was declared a National Historic Landmark and in 1977, Beale Street was officially declared the Home of the Blues by an act of Congress.
Today, all you need to do is take a stroll down Beale Street’s neon row and you’ll hear music spilling out of clubs and restaurants like Rum Boogie Café, B.B. King’s, Silky O’Sullivan’s or the Hard Rock Café. Beale Street is serious about its music, and jam sessions at many of these clubs tend to go deep into the night. For a good time, grab a drink, soak up the sounds and throw a few bucks in the tip jar for the Beale Street Flippers.
The downtown Memphis music scene isn’t just about the blues. Her father, Matthew Garrett, was a jazz trumpeter and teacher at Manassas High School, and through his playing, she was exposed to jazz early on. At the age of sixteen, she was a member of a rock and rhythm'n'blues trio, singing in clubs in Michigan. At 18, she studied at the Michigan State University before she went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. With their jazz band, she toured the Soviet Union in 1969.
The next year, she met trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, and after their marriage, they moved to New York City, where Cecil played in Horace Silver's band. In the early 1970s, Bridgewater joined the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra as the lead vocalist. This marked the beginning of her jazz career, and she performed with many of the great jazz musicians of the time, such as Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Max Roach, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and others. She performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1973. In 1974, her first own album, entitled Afro Blue, appeared, and she also performed on Broadway in the musical The Wiz. Designed to treat boatmen who where injured due to explosions or wrecks. The campus contained six buildings; the surgeon's house, executive building, nurse's quarters, and two wards. Today, only two original building's stand; the nurse's quarters, which was moved 300 ft from the original location, and the executive building, which had been sold and re-purposed as a museum. Memphis, Tenn. – A team of expert pediatric surgeons and specialists at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital has separated 12-month-old ischiopagus (fused together at the lower half of the body) conjoined twin girls, Miracle and Testimony Ayeni. Conjoined twins occur one in 200,000 live births, with 6 percent of those being ischiopagus. The complex, high-risk surgery resulted in complete separation after an 18-hour procedure on Nov. 7-8. Through its research, LHF referred the Ayeni family to Le Bonheur where they have spent the past five months as surgeons prepared for surgery. Efe Farinre, founder of Linking Hands Foundation said, “We are thankful for our connection to Le Bonheur on behalf of the Ayeni twins as part of our Every-Child-Counts Initiative. While caring for Miracle and Testimony, Le Bonheur has consistently demonstrated that truly, they are a hospital where every child matters.”
Miracle and Testimony’s multi-disciplinary team consists of pediatric experts from specialties including anesthesia, child life, critical care, pediatric surgery, orthopedics, nursing, plastic surgery, radiology, rehabilitation therapy, social work, spiritual care and urology. Since their arrival June 27, the twins have been inpatients at Le Bonheur while the family has resided at FedExFamilyHouse, Le Bonheur’s home away from home for out-of-town families.
“Without faith things wouldn’t have worked out,” said the girls’ father, Sam Ayeni. “When you give everything to God and believe, he will give you peace. I have the faith that He is helping us, and we are giving all of this to Him.”
“The medical team at Le Bonheur continues to amaze me every day as they not only meet new challenges, but succeed with great outcomes,” said Meri Armour, Le Bonheur president and CEO. “I have met and grown to love this beautiful family and am moved to tears that our surgeons and doctors have given their girls a new lease on life.”
“Le Bonheur’s medical team is like no other I have worked with throughout my medical career,” said Max Langham, MD, surgical team leader for the Ayeni twins. “To flawlessly execute an 18-hour surgery with this level of coordination proves we have some of the best physicians and surgeons in the world. While caring for Miracle and Testimony, Le Bonheur has consistently demonstrated that truly, they are a hospital where every child matters.”
Miracle and Testimony’s multi-disciplinary team consists of pediatric experts from specialties including anesthesia, child life, critical care, pediatric surgery, orthopedics, nursing, plastic surgery, radiology, rehabilitation therapy, social work, spiritual care and urology. Since their arrival June 27, the twins have been inpatients at Le Bonheur while the family has resided at FedExFamilyHouse, Le Bonheur’s home away from home for out-of-town families.
“Without faith things wouldn’t have worked out,” said the girls’ father, Sam Ayeni. “When you give everything to God and believe, he will give you peace. I have the faith that He is helping us, and we are giving all of this to Him.”
