Newton, 78,  has been in hospital under observation, having been unable to rid himself of a cough.

Newton has hosted the Logie Awards 19 times, but was a no-show for the event on Sunday night.

His wife Pattie attended, wearing a gold sequinned jacket featuring a photo of Bert on the cover of TV Week on the back of it.
