United Kingdom withdrawal from the European Union, often shortened to Brexit (short for British exit) is a political aim of some political parties, advocacy groups, and individuals in the United Kingdom (UK) for the country to leave the European Union (EU). In 1975 a referendum was held on the country's membership of the European Economic Community (EEC), a precursor to the EU. The outcome of the vote was that the country continued to be a member of the EEC. More recently the European Union Referendum Act 2015 has been passed to allow for a referendum on the country's membership of the EU, with a vote due to be held before the end of 2017.
The United Kingdom joined the EEC, commonly referred to as the Common Market in the UK, on 1 January 1973. This was done under the Conservative government of Edward Heath. The opposition Labour Party, led by Harold Wilson, contested the October 1974 general election with a commitment to renegotiate Britain's terms of membership of the EEC and then hold a referendum on whether to remain in the EEC on the new terms.
The UK would be welcome to stay in the EU if it decided to reverse Brexit, the president of the European Parliament has said, in stark contrast to Prime Minister Theresa May’s statement that there is now “no turning back.” RT LIVE http://rt.com/on-air Subscribe to RT! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=RussiaToday Like us on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/RTnews Follow us on Twitter http://twitter.com/RT_com Follow us on Instagram http://instagram.com/rt Follow us on Google+ http://plus.google.com/+RT Listen to us on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/rttv RT (Russia Today) is a global news network broadcasting from Moscow and Washington studios. This Lib Dem writer wants a referendum on the terms of the Brexit deal. Nick Ferrari wants to know why she can't accept the result of last year's referendum. "You want a referendum on the deal?" asked an incredulous Nick as he spoke to Caron Lindsay, editor of Liberal Democrat Voice. "Absolutely, that's what it's about," said Lindsay. "If we don't like the deal, we stay in the EU." "So effectively it's a best of three [referendums] for you, is it?" asked Nick. "We had the one back in the 1970s, the one back last year and now, under the Lib Dems, we'd have another one. "And presumably, if you didn't get that one, you wouldn't like that one either. Why are you doing Europe's work for them?" Lindsay: "What we're doing is we're giving the people control." Nick: "The people were given con...

Then, with a little more than 24 hours of campaigning left, a 39-year-old convict targeted police on Paris' Champs-Elysées, killing an officer, injuring three, dying in a hail of bullets and stealing everyone's attention. How will this impact the election? With the top four candidates still neck-and-and neck, our panel of international journalists try to make sense of an election unlike any France has seen before. The Prime Minister Theresa May says she called the general election to give the public a chance to place their trust in her and in the government. She rejected claims she was capitalising on Conservative gains in the opinion polls and said opposition parties were to blame for "frustrating" the Brexit process. She told the Today programme this election would strengthen her mandate when negotiating with the European Union. Short documentary set in the former mining village of Stainforth, near Doncaster, in the wake of the Brexit. Sheena Moore, a social worker from a former coal mining family leads us through her village and asks people how they voted, why, and what they hope for.
