Recording Industry Association of America

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is a trade organization that represents the recording industry in the United States. Its members consist of record labels and distributors, which the RIAA says "create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 85% of all legally sold recorded music in the United States." The RIAA headquarters is in Washington, D.C.

The RIAA was formed in 1952. Its original mission was to administer recording copyright fees and problems, work with trade unions, and do research relating to the record industry and government regulations. Early RIAA standards included the RIAA equalization curve, the format of the stereophonic record groove and the dimensions of 33 1/3 rpm, 45 rpm, and 78 rpm records.

The RIAA says its current mission includes the following:

to protect intellectual property rights and the First Amendment rights of artists;

to perform research about the music industry;

to monitor and review relevant laws, regulations and policies.

The RIAA Will Now Factor Streaming Into Gold and Platinum Album Certifications
The RIAA announced a major game-changer today that will have an immediate impact on the industry. In a statement from CEO and Chairman Cary Sherman, the RIAA revealed they will now factor audio and video streams into gold and platinum album certifications. Basically, this means that streams will now be counted for the first time when determining if an album is gold or platinum status. Because of the change, 17 projects reached a new milestone today, including Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly and Big Sean's Dark Sky Paradise both hitting platinum status. "We know that music listening – for both for albums and songs – is skyrocketing, yet that trend has not been reflected in our album certifications," Sherman said in a statement. "Modernizing our Album Award to include music streaming is the next logical step in the continued evolution of Gold & Platinum Awards, and doing so enables RIAA to fully reward the success of artists’ albums today." The breakdown is that 1,500 audio or video song streams equals 10 track sales, which then equals one album sale. In the 1940s there were as many as 100 different turntable EQs for records. So in 1954 the RIAA, the Recording Industry Association of America established an EQ for records so that all disc recordings would be standardized. This EQ added hi-frequency pre-emphasis to minimize the surface noise, in the same way that the NAB EQ helps minimize tape hiss. However, since music today is mixed with much more hi-frequency content than in 1954, care needs to be taken to assure that sibilance distortion doesn't occur, due to this hi-frequency premphasis. In addition, the RIAA EQ adds a 6 dB per octave hi-pass roll off starting at 1 kHz, so that the signal at 20 Hz is reduced by 20 dB. This permits narrower grooves, allowing more time to be recorded on the disc. Without this low-end roll off, only about 5 minutes of music could be recorded on a 12" disc. Then on playback of the disc, the highs are attenuated to match the pre-emphasis and the bass is boosted to match the de-emphasis.

BACKGROUND FROM BRITNEY TO BARNEY Music Torture has been officially and publicly confirmed by government officials, human rights organizations, prison guards and interrogators, as well as suspected terrorists who have been detained in military prisons and detention centers. The United Nations and the European Court of Human Rights have banned the use of loud music in interrogations. The United States Department of Defense and Central Intelligence Agency has made extensive use of sonic interrogation techniques, ie. torture by music, in facilities like Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay, Kandahar, Bagram Detention Center and numerous “black sites” scattered around the globe. Such Interrogation techniques, combined with sleep deprivation, hard treatment, water-boarding, air deprivation and other notorious forms of torture, has been legalized under special provision of the United States Department of Justice and the White House under both the Bush and Obama administrations and continues to be used today. The actual music used in TORTURE CLASSICS has been reported by both prison guards and released inmates (Binyam Mohamed and Donald Vance, tortured with music for 76 days) and includes Top 40 hits, Metal, Hard Rock, Country and Western, TV theme-songs and commercial jingles, as well as original “mash-ups” created by CIA agents, prison administrators, guards and interrogators. Anonymous: “The Barney Song has a sound that was designed to make children feel safe and loved. But it was used to torture people and to drive them to their emotional breaking point. Music publisher Jive Records changed Britney Spears song title from “Hit me Baby One More Time” to “... Baby One More Time” to get rid of the ambiguous undercurrent to the catchy pop smash hit”. Sgt.
