Television legend Bert Newton is in Melbourne's Epworth Hospital following complications from pneumonia.

Channel Nine reported that Newton, 78, was under observation on Thursday night, having been unable to rid himself of a cough.

The network said he was diagnosed with pneumonia five weeks ago.

Newton has hosted the Logie Awards 19 times, but was a no-show for the event on Sunday night.

His wife Pattie attended, wearing a gold sequinned jacket featuring a photo of Bert on the cover of TV Week on the back of it.

Known as Ol' Moonface, the much-loved Newton has enjoyed amazing longevity in television, moving from radio to TV in the industry's earliest days.

He worked on variety shows with Graham Kennedy and Don Lane and hosted Good Morning Australia and New Faces.

More recently, he has performed in stage shows including The Sound of Music, Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Producers
