Kenya (/ˈkɛnjə/; locally [ˈkɛɲa]), officially the Republic of Kenya, is a country in Africa and a founding member of the East African Community (EAC). Its capital and largest city is Nairobi. Kenya's territory lies on the equator and overlies the East African Rift covering a diverse and expansive terrain that extends roughly from Lake Victoria to Lake Turkana (formerly called Lake Rudolf) and further south-east to the Indian Ocean. It is bordered by Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east. Kenya covers 581,309 km2 (224,445 sq mi), and had a population of approximately 45 million people in July 2014.
Kenya has a warm and humid tropical climate on its Indian Ocean coastline. The climate is cooler in the savannah grasslands around the capital city, Nairobi, and especially closer to Mount Kenya, which has snow permanently on its peaks. Further inland, in the Nyanza region, there is a hot and dry climate which becomes humid around Lake Victoria, the largest tropical fresh-water lake in the world. This gives way to temperate and forested hilly areas in the neighboring western region. The north-eastern regions along the border with Somalia and Ethiopia are arid and semi-arid areas with near-desert landscapes. Kenya is known for its safaris, diverse climate and geography, and expansive wildlife reserves and national parks such as the East and West Tsavo National Park, the Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Aberdares National Park. Kenya has several world heritage sites such as Lamu and numerous beaches, including in Diani, Bamburi and Kilifi, where international yachting competitions are held every year.

Plot: This film, The Jose Lucas Story, is said to be based on a fictionalized account of a particular string of criminal exploits, leading to the arrest, conviction, incarceration, and too sudden death of one, Jose Lucas, a local Brooklyn kid whose early life reads like a Dicken's novel, and ends like a classic Shakespearean tragedy. He's convicted and given a 23-year prison sentence for having been a perpetrator in a notorious day-time jewelry heist in toney, downtown Georgetown, Washington, DC.(2005) Lucas had managed to be caught on a security camera with his homeboy Lex (the one who actually used the gun, shot the shop's jeweler, and managed also, to be un-masked on camera) by design of the other two culprits, Robert and 'E," who when arrested later, in another robbery, make a deal with the DA to escape the heavy sentences given Jose and Lex (who got 24 years as the shooter) by giving them up. The film attempts to get at the story behind that conviction, which many believed resulted in a grossly unfair sentence. After having accepted that Jose has lost in court, they had hoped to fight the verdict; Jose's defense did file and lose several appeals. They had settled into the reality that most residents-of- color in Brooklyn find themselves: that of having a loved one incarcerated.

The World Bank has highlighted that Kenya's economic growth has been robust in the face of a global economic slowdown and low commodity prices. This has been supported by the non-dependence on oil exports; and price stability in its top exports, effectively shielding it from plunging commodity prices.
Kenya has been voted the third fastest growing economy in the world in a survey of the top 20 economies experiencing robust growth, in 2015. According to economists surveyed by Bloomberg, a leading business reporting network in the world, only China and the Philippines were likely to experience higher growth this year.

Kenya’s economy made significant strides jumping up 21 places to be ranked 92 out of 190 countries surveyed in the 2016 World bank ease of doing business report. Based on the progress, Kenya was rated the third most improved economy, a sign that a raft of business reforms initiated by the government may be paying off. The World Bank has further projected Kenya's economy to grow by 5.9 percent in 2016 The International Monetary Fund – IMF has however revised its growth projection for Kenya's economy to 6.8 per cent, down from the initial figure of 7.2 per cent, owing to the prevailing harsh economic conditions. As Zawadi Mudibo reports, more questions than answers abound on whether or not the said economic growth has had a positive impact on the incomes of Kenyan households and the small an...
South Africa became part of the BRICS group back in twenty ten and its clear to see why. From two thousand and two through to two thousand and eight, the country experienced annual growth averaging a tad under five percent per year and at times during that period it had teased the eight percent level giving a glimpse of the possibilities ahead. With vast natural resources such as gold, diamonds and platinum, excellent infrastructure and easy access to finance for business it had all the right ingredients in place for this trend to continue. The global recession hit hard however and, after a sharp contraction in the economy of six percent, it never really found its feet again. An increasingly corrupt government and high crime rates haven’t helped win foreign investment back into the region...
Through the introduction of community currencies like Lindi Pesa, the business community in Nairobi's poor neighborhoods are redesigning money to make it flow around the local economy more effectively. The brilliance of such currencies lies in the way they enable financial inclusion; how they bring very small businesses into the main economic system which they would otherwise not engage in.
http://bdafrica.com Kenya’s economy is expected to grow between 5 and 5.6 percent in 2017, supported by increased government spending and resilient performance in transport, trade and tourism. According to a report released today by Britam Asset Managers, the government needs to grow its expenditure by the targeted 16.4 percent this fiscal year, and achieve the expected 17.6 percent increase in revenues in order to meet the projected economic growth. The government must therefore spend to sustain GDP growth above 5.0% in 2017, as private sector credit growth remains subdued.

The newly produced series ‘Aid or Trade?’ shows that aid is no longer about transferring money or shipping goods. It’s rather about setting up sustainable companies, while taking local constraints and the environment into account. An article in the Economist recently stated 'Western governments should open up to trade rather than just dish out aid … Autocracy, corruption and strife will not disappear overnight. But at a dark time for the world economy, Africa’s progress is a reminder of the transformative promise of growth.' This 5 episode-series 'Aid or Trade?' (5 x 14 minutes) shows an optimistic and nuanced perspective and portrays successful combinations and collaborations. The program highlights high-potential or successful initiatives: often collaboration between NGO’s, private, and...

A short film depicting a Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies stove project in Kisumu, Kenya. Though stove projects are quite common this one differs in combining a number of aspects, the stove is both energy efficient, has a chimney leading out harmful smoke and can be locally manufactured. It may thus hit three targets; 1), halving fuel consumption hampers deforestation which is a major problem in the area; 2), respiratory disease is a severe health issue in Kenya (and world wide), the chimney reduces in-door pollution to a minimum; and 3), by utilizing the local community, from entrepreneurs to craftsmen, in the entire process the production and spreading of the stove generates business boosting local economy.

On April 15th 2013 I left for Kenya. I would be there for 17 days and enjoy great food, great culture great music, and great people. As an artist, I had the opportunity to be interviewed by the nations top TV / radio show hosts. I preformed at Embassy Cinema, now home to Maximum Miracle Center Church, where I have life long friendships with the pastors and youth. Being appreciated and loved for what you do and who you are is important. Kenya is a place where I turn on TV and see my music videos played on prime time and hear my songs in rush hour traffic played on radio. This was not my first tour here and will not be my last! Naturally, in the meantime we can meet elephants, lions, giraffes and dolphins. We can marvel at the 13th century city of Gedi. We can take a boat trip among the coral reefs of the sea national parks, or be amazed by the war dance of the Masai people, and can have a dinner at a coral cave.

This is a journey into Kenya’s origins and its uncertain future. We travel along the colony’s iron foundations, the railway lines laid by the British imperialists as they raced to create a passage to Lake Victoria from Mombasa. 120 years later, the same railway is enjoyed by tourists seeking a taste of the vintage African safari, with luxury 1st-class carriages and pressed napkins. To either side of their trammelled way lie the gleaming metropolis of Nairobi, the rolling ranchers’ pastures and the sprawling slums of Kibera. Shot on SD and 8mm film, this film takes the viewer on an experiential journey through different periods of history and levels of society: we are welcomed by a demented Mau Mau veteran, carefully set on our way by a railway tourist guide, and bade farewell in true Momb...
Of course David will be the consummate safari guide: he lives just outside of Kenya's Tsavo National Park; has more than 12 years of experience as a ranger, tour director, and bush transport manager; is an avid birder and photographer; and even has a poultry farm! But David brings much more to the table.... "All guests traveling with me throughout Kenya and Tanzania will obviously enjoy the game, but the thing that they take with them is the moments shared talking about all things under the sun. A day will not pass without a small lecture on topics from education, economics, politics, and how modernity is affecting people across the destination." David is also a youth counselor through his church, and is very involved in conservation efforts and community service. He is currently working t...
Hoti grew up on his family's farm in Tanzania's lake district, not far from the wildlife reserves at Lake Manyara, then later went on to earn a diploma from the College of African Wildlife Management in Mweka, Tanzania. "My Vantage travelers benefit greatly from my love and knowledge of African wildlife," he says. However, it's Hoti's many other experiences that make him the terrific guide and fascinating travel companion that he is, such as teaching secondary school for 14 years and working with Irish missionaries to provide food and medicine to Rwandan and Congolese refugees. He even studied in Ireland, where he earned a degree at St. Patrick College and advised missionaries preparing for Africa. What does Hoti particularly look forward to sharing with his travelers? "I take great pride ...

Heading to the continent of Africa our presenters land in its capital city Nairobi and head straight for one of its infamous slums- Kibera. It doesn't take long for them to attract the services of an impromptu guide. Next they move across town to observe auditions looking for Kenya's next Top Comic and Julian attempts to get some laughs with some of his best gags. The next day they join Africa's most elegant animal for breakfast before Julian goes shopping at the touristy Masai Market. Leaving the urban jungle our travellers fly into the stunning Masai Mara Reserve where they experience camping luxury. Julian finds the Mara and its inhabitants a little scary and is concerned when their guide stops to make them a picnic lunch close to a lion's lair. They meet Letilet, an ex-poacher turned g...
Located in Eastern Africa, Kenya lies astride the equator and shares its borders with Tanzania and Uganda. The country boasts a warm humid climate with diverse ecosystems, from snow-capped mountains, semi-arid desert regions and rainforests, to acacia-studded savannah, flamingo lakes, white palm-fringed ocean beaches and coral reefs. How about this for the ultimate sundowner? We heard about it from two guests, recently returned from Kenya's Mara North Conservancy. Their game drive ended on an isolated hill with a poetry-inducing 360-degree panorama. As the setting sun stained the vast wilderness blood red, their guide handed them Masai blankets, traditional weapons and an iced G&T; with freshly cut lime. For a perfect crescendo, they spotted a huge leopard as they drove back to camp, foll...

On the 30th of May the first SGR train will make its maiden trip from Mombasa to Nairobi, heralding a new dawn in Kenya’s rail transport, as the new track replaces the lunatic express that was constructed more than a century ago. Starting tonight and every other night till next week Wednesday, we will be featuring reports on this new dawn. First off the rail, we take you on one last ride on the lunatic express as we compare it with what to expect, on what we have christened the oriental express, whose foundation President Uhuru Kenyatta laid in November 2013. This is the first installment of a week long series, the oriental express
Raila's home in Kisumu is complete. The house made headlines in 2014 after it was reported to cost a whooping Sh1 billion. The palatial hill-side residence is located in Riat, overlooking Kisumu International Airport. It gives the former PM a near aerial view of Kisumu city. According to sources, the house has close to 10 bedrooms including the master bedroom, all upstairs. It has four expansive kitchens, two main conference rooms, two small conference rooms and many offices. A series of photos making rounds online have given an idea of what the just completed KSh 1billion place belonging to CORD leader looks like - It has 10 bedrooms, Jacuzzis, a humongous helipad, conference halls, a theatre and state-of-the-art kichens - It has been called by critics, the Raila Odinga's State House, a ...
