Frank Vincent Zappa (December 21, 1940 – December 4, 1993) was an American musician, songwriter, composer, record producer, actor and filmmaker. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Zappa composed rock n' roll, jazz, jazz fusion, orchestral and musique concrète works, and produced almost all of the more than sixty albums he released with his band the Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist. He also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers.
Zappa was a self-taught composer and performer, and his diverse musical influences led him to create music that was often difficult to categorize. While in his teens, he acquired a taste for 20th-century classical composers such as Edgard Varèse, Igor Stravinsky, and Anton Webern, along with 1950s rhythm and blues music. He began writing classical music in high school, while at the same time playing drums in rhythm and blues bands; later switching to electric guitar. His 1966 debut album with the Mothers of Invention, Freak Out!, combined songs in conventional rock and roll format with collective improvisations and studio-generated sound collages. He continued this eclectic and experimental approach, irrespective of whether the fundamental format was rock, jazz or classical.
"Cosmik Debris" is a song by American composer Frank Zappa, from his 1974 album Apostrophe (').
It concerns the Mystery Man, a typical guru or psychic, offering to help the narrator reach Nervanna [sic] for a "nominal service charge," and the narrator's refusal to buy into his act, "Look here, brother, who you jiving with that cosmik debris?" When the Mystery Man gets pushy, Zappa as the narrator tells how he snatched the crystal ball, hypnotized the Mystery Man, stole his stuff and blew his mind.
The song was popular on the Dr. Demento Show in the 70s, and in Zappa's concerts, with memorable guitar solos from Zappa, also featuring George Duke on keyboard and Napoleon Murphy Brock on sax. The song was featured in the late-2010 Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa tour, where through the magic of video and editing (from 1970s-era shows), Frank Zappa on a large video screen both sang and played a guitar solo while the ZPZ band provided a live backing. This song was also a b-side to the single "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow."

Frank Zappa's 1974 album Roxy & Elsewhere captured for posterity one of the most musically accomplished incarnations of The Mothers (George Duke, keyboards; Tom Fowler, bass; Ruth Underwood, percussion; Bruce Fowler, trombone; Walt Fowler, trumpet; Napoleon Murphy Brock, tenor sax, vocals; and Chester Thompson and Ralph Humphrey on drums) onstage and on fire. Roxy & Elsewhere was recorded primarily over three nights (December 8,9,10, 1973) live at The Roxy nightclub in the heart of the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. The Roxy is a pretty intimate club—a performer onstage there could practically make eye-contact with every member of the audience—and the musicianship during these sets was particularly inspired. http://frankzapppa.blogspot.com/ http://youtu.be/V2a0ux53dKY

For more info - http://www.eagle-rock.com/artist/frank-zappa/#.U-s8WzhwYdU Frank Zappa's New York Halloween 1981 concerts were filmed Live at The Palladium. This 'thing' entitled "The Torture Never Stops" was created in its entirety by FZ from the original concert production and intended by the Artist as one of 3 Television Specials. This is the longest version of the three - the others, "You Are What You Is" and "Dumb All Over", having actually aired. Halloween was Frank Zappa's favourite holiday, and New York was the site of Frank Zappa Halloween concerts for years! The billion and a half airings by MTV of the concerts (non-edited) followed on closely from the release of the double album "You Are What You Is" in September of that year on Frank Zappa's own recently founded and thoroughl...

Segments taken from Roelof Kiers fantastic documentary filmed for the VPRO in Holland. Live footage is from a show at The Fillmore West in San Francisco, CA on November 6th, 1970. Great lineup here featuring Flo & Eddie as well as the incredible drummer Aynsley Dunbar--who lost Jimi Hendrix's coin toss to Mitch Mitchell in 1966 when he couldn't decide between the two drummers. Also featuring George Duke, Ian Underwood & Jeff Simmons. Quality is decent, recorded from a TV broadcast.Unsettling that these interview segments were shot over 45 years ago.

Fillmore East – June 1971 is a live album by The Mothers, released in 1971. It was the twelfth album by Frank Zappa. It was produced by Frank Zappa, and mixed by Toby Foster. Fillmore East – June 1971 was a live concept-like album. It was a peek-behind-the-curtain of the life of a rock band on the road as narrated by Frank Zappa, and contains many thematic elements that, because of time and budget constraints, couldn't be included in the similar movie 200 Motels. The most famous part of the album is "The Mud Shark", a telling of a story told to Mother Don Preston by some members of Vanilla Fudge about a hotel, Seattle's Edgewater Inn, where guests could fish from their rooms. In the tale, a mud shark is caught by one of the members of Vanilla Fudge or its crew and, when combined with a gr...

Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention continue to influence many areas of music long after their wonderful run. Their fusions of Jazz, Rock, Blues, R&B;, and just about everything else helped create and re-define Fusion. If they aren't on your iPod already, they should be. One of Frank's favorites, "Peaches En Regalia" was a mainstay of live performances continued in the 21st Century by his son Dweezil through Zappa Plays Zappa. I couldn't find HQ uploads of this album so here it is. Hot Rats is the second solo album by Frank Zappa. It was released in October 1969. Five of the six songs are instrumental ("Willie the Pimp" features a short vocal by Captain Beefheart). It was Zappa's first recording project after the dissolution of the original Mothers of Invention. In 1987 Zappa remixed Hot Rats for re-issue on Compact Disc. "Willie the Pimp" is edited differently during the introduction and guitar solo. "The Gumbo Variations" has 4 minutes of additional material including an introduction and guitar and saxophone solo sections which were cut from the vinyl LP version. Piano and flute which were buried in the LP mix of "Little Umbrellas" are prominent on the CD. Other differences include significant changes to the...
Back in 1993 this doc was shown on BBC2 about three times and never since. The interview with Frank Zappa was one of his last and I first saw it in early '93 when I taped it on VHS. In those days TV was not the horrible medium it is today, there were some decent Arts programmes and not Kirsty Wark showing how ignorant she is by hosting a cretinous book club or the X Factor. Hope you like this clip. I had to wind & rewind the tape about 15 times before it would play without a shower of static all over the screen, not bad for an 18 year old tape. VHS players never had an auto-function to counter tracking issues and a deterioration in the RF that you can see at the bottom of the frame, aside from re-tracking as best as possible. Zappa again interviewed by the Finnish national tv. He is answering in his brilliant style.
1. Interview broadcast on Danish TV, September 22nd, 1987. 2. Nightline (American TV News) September 13th, 1985. 3. Evening News, September 12th, 1985.
One of Frank's last interviews, conducted by NBC's Jamie Gangel for the Today Show.
In this long interview from the October 26th, 1981, edition of the "Freeman Report", host Sandi Freeman appears mostly well prepared as she asks Frank Zappa open ended questions concerning his views on a variety of topics. For his own part, Zappa is unusually open and honest and personal throughout. The original video was created by CNN and available through Creative Commons License through YouTube's video editor. I called Penny Zemp at Partners In Music and asked if Yonder Mountain String band could make themselves available to me during their visit to New York City. She said I could shoot an interview and performance the day of their gig at Irving Plaza so long as I provided transportation for the band and their gear. I told Penny, "No problem," and waited for the date. The day of the gig, I hopped into my VW Westy and drove to Irving Plaza to collect the guys. Everyone got a nice laugh when they saw the van. We loaded everything up and headed up to midtown for the shoot. When we arrived at the studio the band sat down for an interview. Ben Kaufmann talks about the band's influences which, for a bluegrass band, are surprising - Frank Zappa to name one. Dave Johnston explains to viewers how bluegr...

The mystery man came over
And he said "I'm outta sight!"
He said for a nominal service charge
I could reach nirvana tonight
If I was ready, willing and able
To pay him his regular fee
He would drop all the rest of
His pressing affairs and devote
His attention to me
But I said "Look here brother
who you jiving with that cosmik debris?
Now who you jiving with that cosmik debris?
Look here brother, don't waste your time on me"
The mystery man got nervous
And he fidget around a bit
He reached in the pocket of his mystery robe
And he whipped out a shaving kit
Now I thought it was a razor
And a can of foaming goo
But he told me right then when the top popped open
There was nothin' his box won't do
With the oil of Aphrodite, and the dust of the Grand Wazoo
He said "You might not believe this, little fella
But it'll cure your asthma too"
And I said "Look here brother
Who you jiving with that cosmik debris?
Now what kind of a guru are you, anyway?
Look here brother, don't waste your time on me"
*(Don't waste your time)*
"I've got troubles of my own", I said
"And you can't help me out
So, take your meditations and your preparations
And ram it up your snout!"
"But I got the crystal ball", he said
And held it to the light
So I snatched it, all away from him
And I showed him how to do it right
I wrapped a newspaper 'round my head
So I looked like I was deep
I said some mumbo-jumbo, then
I told him he was going to sleep
I robbed his rings and pocketwatch
And everything else I found
I had that sucker hypnotized
He couldn't even make a sound
I proceeded to tell him his future, then
As long as he was hanging around
I said "The price of meat has just gone up
And your old lady has just gone down!"
And I said "Look here brother-who you
Jiving with that cosmik debris?
Now is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?
Don't you know, you could make more money as a butcher?
So, don't waste your time on me"
Don't waste it, don't waste your time on me
