Iraq (/ɪˈræk/, i/ɪˈrɑːk/, or /aɪˈræk/; Arabic: العراق al-‘Irāq, Kurdish: Êraq), officially the Republic of Iraq (Arabic:
جمهورية العراق Jumhūrīyat al-‘Irāq; Kurdish: كۆماری عێراق Komar-i ‘Êraq), is a country in Western Asia. The country borders Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest, and Syria to the west. The southern part of Iraq is within the Arabian Peninsula. The capital, Baghdad, is in the centre of the country and its largest city. The largest ethnic groups in Iraq are Arabs and Kurds. Other ethnic groups include Assyrians, Turkmen, Shabakis, Yazidis, Armenians, Mandeans, Circassians, and Kawliya. Around 95% of the country's 36 million citizens are Shia or Sunni Muslims, with Christianity, Yarsan, Yezidism, and Mandeanism also present.
Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf and its territory encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through the centre of Iraq and flow into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land.

Part 2: http://vimeo.com/debalie/statelessdemocracy2 (also on http://youtu.be/TldgkitcS-s ) The fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has often been portrayed as a fight between the West and its Arab allies against Islamic ultra-fundamentalists. Over the last several years, however, a progressive Kurdish-led resistance has been forming in Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan) amidst the Syrian Civil War. The resistance has successfully implemented new models of grassroots democracy, gender equality, and sustainable ecology, its members practicing a political project they refer to as Democratic Confederalism. Women and men stand side-by-side in its armed forces in the face of both ISIS and the Bashar al-Assad regime. Despite the resistance’s efforts, Rojava is currently threatened b...

In this in-depth talk, ethnographer and leadership expert Simon Sinek reveals the hidden dynamics that inspire leadership and trust. In biological terms, leaders get the first pick of food and other spoils, but at a cost. When danger is present, the group expects the leader to mitigate all threats even at the expense of their personal well-being. Understanding this deep-seated expectation is the key difference between someone who is just an “authority” versus a true “leader.” For more on this topic, check out Sinek’s latest book Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don’t now available for pre-order. Nov 2005 http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/guardianfilms+world/iraq Nearly three years of violence have left Iraq on the verge of a collective breakdown. One year ago, 12 year old Walla watched a suicide bomber blow himself up, killing her best friend. "There was blood everywhere; his eye was hanging out." She demonstrates all the classic symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder but has received no treatment. Numerous reports indicate that a large percentage of soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are suffering from mental health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder. The Oversight Committee holds a hearing with afflicted soldiers and their families, and examine the ability of the DOD and the VA to screen, treat, and track returning soldiers who are at risk, and assess the impact that these illnesses are having on military readiness and military families. Army Specialist Thomas Smith and Army Specialist Michael Bloodworth give opening remarks.

While hosting a White House gathering for Senators, President Donald Trump commented that doing a health care insurance deal would be easy and said US soldiers in Iraq were fighting "like never before." White House Press Secretary says the comments were made in a "light hearted moment" and Trump knows that a deal on health care insurance will be difficult. He says that Trump does know that US soldiers in Iraq are no longer fighting house-to-house like they have under the Bush and Obama administrations and they are in Iraq in an advisory role.
Arabic/Eng/Nat Four months after being gunned down in Iraq, Saddam Hussein's eldest son Uday Hussein said Tuesday he expected to be able to walk again within weeks. German and Iraqi doctors operated on Uday Sunday. Officials said the surgery was to remove a bullet that lodged near the patient's spine, but Uday himself told APTV the surgery was to repair his shattered left leg. Uday Hussein is still in hospital following last December's assassination attempt. On Tuesday, he spoke to APTV two days after German and Iraqi doctors operated on him. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) "The operation was carried out last Sunday by a group of foreign surgeons from friendly countries. Some Iraqi doctors also took part - with the exception of the French. The operation was successful and I ...
March 2004 For Iraqis, the breakdown of their health service is just as concerning as the decline in security. At Baghdad Central Children's hospital, used needles litter the filthy corridors. There is rotting garbage and a cesspool underneath the wards. "I'm afraid the smell and diseases coming from that pool will make her even more sick," fears one patient's mother. The biggest threat to the children here comes from cross-infection caused by unsanitary conditions. Only three of the six wards are operating because of staff or equipment shortages. Some patients even have to sleep on the floor because there are not enough beds. "The Americans said they would build hospitals, treat children," complains one patient's father. "But all you find is killing, illness, and death." Produced ...
In Iraq, some of the people who fled are facing traumatic experiences that severely impact their mental health. These traumas range from losing their home to losing their family members. Many of these people still live with their traumas and visit our mental health center asking for assistance. There are more that 7,000 psychological group sessions held, and 188,000 total clients that have participated in the sessions. http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/ Twitter: @MSF_USA
Today thousands of volunteers throughout New York City distributed "special edition" copies of the New York Times. http://nytimes-se.com The front page proclaimed "IRAQ WAR ENDS" and the paper's 14 pages were filled with utopian stories about the passing of universal health care and the American economy returning to normal. It was future-dated July 4th, 2009.

It's the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War and with talk of it not being even half-way through, we are approaching the 4000th American combat death. More importantly, a recent World Health Organization report based on Iraqi Health Ministry figures estimated that 151,000 Iraqi civilians were killed between March 2003, the start of the invasion, and June 2006. Many of the reports of civilian deaths are disputed. What cannot be argued, however, is another grave consequence of the Iraq War: the displacement crisis as a mass exodus of Iraqis flee the instabilities and ever-increasing sectarian violence at home, tearing their families apart. In mid-January 2008, with the support of the United Nations High Commission For Refugees (UNHCR), I traveled to Amman, Jordan to photograph and record a...
Deeya's mom used to stay at home for fear that her daughter's heart could give out at any moment. Her daughter was born with a life-threatening heart defect... and her daughter was born in Iraq. The combination virtually guaranteed that her daughter would never get the lifesaving heart surgery she needed inside the country; after all, the waiting list for kids needing lifesaving heart surgeries is estimated at 30,000. In August 2010 the Preemptive Love Coalition (PLC) worked with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and local non-governmental organizations to bring a surgical team to northern Iraq to begin a robust multi-year training mission for the doctors and nurses of Iraq. In the course of training, we served 25 families and raised the hopes and expectations of medical professiona...

High in the mountains of northeastern Iraq’s Kurdistan region, wildlife conservationist Hana Ahmed Raza and a team of researchers with the non-governmental organization Nature Iraq are working to protect the ghostlike Persian leopard. A sub-species of the broader family of leopards roaming across Africa and Asia, the Persian leopard (Panthera pardus saxicolor) numbers between 800 and 1,000 individuals, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and is under threat due to poaching, habitat loss and fragmentation, and diminishing prey. Why is this particular species of leopard so important? As Raza points out in the video, “The Persian leopard is the only remaining predator in the [Kurdistan] ecosystem,” and the health of the ecosystem depends on the presence of large...
On November 14, 2004, photographer Ashley Gilbertson followed two marines up the stairs of a mosque in Fallujah, Iraq. Working for The New York Times, Gilbertson was there for a photograph. Instead, he watched a young man die. It wasn't the first death he'd seen, but it has haunted him ever since. During the last weekend I finished a multimedia work about the Remedy Mission that I worked for in last August. These Remedy Missions are lifesaving campaigns done by Preemptive Love Coalition in Iraq. Their goal is to bring pediatric heart surgery teams, to perform surgeries on Iraqi children and at the same time to train Iraqi doctors and nurses. This is what PLC wrote about this story: "Deeya's mom used to stay at home for fear that her daughter's heart could give out at any moment. Her daughter was born with a life-threatening heart defect... and her daughter was born in Iraq. The combination virtually guaranteed that her daughter would never get the lifesaving heart surgery she needed inside the country; after all, the waiting list for kids needing lifesaving heart surgeries is estim...

The First Battle of Fallujah, also known as Operation Vigilant Resolve, was an operation to root out extremist elements of Fallujah and an act of retaliation to, as well as an attempt to apprehend the perpetrators of, the killing of four U.S. contractors in April 2004. The chief catalyst for the operation was the highly publicized killing and mutilation of four Blackwater USA private military contractors, and the killings of five American soldiers in Habbaniyah a few days earlier. The battle polarized public opinion within Iraq. The Second Battle of Fallujah—code-named Operation Al-Fajr and Operation Phantom Fury—was a joint American, Iraqi, and British offensive in November and December 2004, considered the highest point of conflict in Fallujah during the Iraq War. Directed by Nahid Ghobadi and Bijan Zamanpira, Iraq, 2012 A government official, carrying a message from Iran’s president, travels across Iranian Kurdistan with his driver and a young guide on a mission to stop 111 young Kurdish women from committing suicide in protest against conditions that have left them spinsters. Racing against the clock, they travel into territory simmering with resentment at official neglect and the hardship it has sown among a proud people. Against a dramatically colorful physical and human landscape, wistful longing mingles with dreamlike desire and absurdist humor as the three travelers meander helplessly in a land riddled with contradictions. # 12 Things NOT To Do in Iraq By: http://www.destinationtips.com/ Iraq is a lovely place. So know these 12 Things NOT to Do, before you go! 1. Try Not to stand out Rather than driving fast, surrounded by bodyguards try to blend in as much as possible. Women should dress in local fashion and men should grow out their facial hair. 2. Don't Step On Bread! Bread is a highly treasured food in Iraq. If you happen across a fallen hunk in the street don't step on it or touch it with your feet! 3. Don't Visit the Borders. Don't travel near the Syrian, Turkish, or Iranian borders. You may encounter large refugee flows. 4. Don't Bring Bad Luck. When Iraqis buy a new appliance they will crack an egg over it to wash away any bad luck! Iraqis are very superstitious. 5. Don't Get Jumpy! You oft...
