I Am Duran: The Autobiography of Roberto Duran Hardcover – 8 Sept. 2016

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 253 ratings

They called him 'Hands of Stone'. In his own words, and for the first time, Roberto Duran tells his unbelievable story in I Am Duran: The Autobiography of Robert Duran. From the mean streets of Panama to the bright lights of Las Vegas, blazing a trail through the golden decade of boxing, Duran, in unflinching form, dispels myths and lays bare the cost of conquering the world. He also returns to the debacle that entered sporting folklore during his rematch with Sugar Ray Leonard, when he uttered the infamous words 'no mas' - no more.

Starting life in abject poverty as the illegitimate son of a serving US soldier, Duran quickly realized that his fists could both protect him on the streets and put food on the table. His reputation in and out of the ring travelled the corridors of boxing power on the day, for a bet, he knocked down a horse with a single punch.

From his stunning debut in New York to the glorious defeat of Sugar Ray Leonard, the world titles and the chaos that ensued after the No Mas encounter, Duran's explosive life in the ring was matched only by the volatility outside of it, as he lurched from kingmaker to bankruptcy, before the ultimate ending of a bloody comeback and, finally, redemption.

Review

My hero and inspiration, and the greatest boxer of his generation. An unbelievable story -- Ricky Hatton

If a pound-for-pound list of boxing autobiographies existed, this fascinating account of his life would sit comfortably on it. -- Marc Deanie ―
Boxing Truth

I was drawn in and kept reading and before I knew I was through the book and feeling, really feeling, like I just sat down to a long dinner and beers after in some open Panamanian café with Durán sitting across from me just speaking with no filter, none at all. -- Frank Miniter ―

About the Author

Roberto Duran, born in Panama in 1951, is often described as one of the greatest boxers of all time. He won world titles at four different weights. His epic bouts with Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns have gone down in boxing history and his pro record of 104 wins (69 by KO) in 120 fights puts him in an elite group of fighters. He is the boxers' boxer, and his fearless fighting style earned him the sobriquet 'Hands of Stone'. His autobiography, I Am Duran, charts his rise to success.

One of the best boxing memoirs I've read - and I've read a lot of them. And it's almost certainly the funniest. Duran's personality oozes from the pages, the man is as wild out of the ring and he was in it and at times it's like reading the life and times of the Tasmanian Devil. Brilliant.

Ignore the other reviews. This is a really nice read and does a wonderful job of revealing the real Roberto Duran. Ignore the other autobiographies out there. They are all based on this one and are not very good. This is a great read and well worth the price

Interesting read, written from the voice of Roberto Duran. You get an emotional side to Roberto Duran. You also get an insight to one of the Four Kings, I think each of them could make a case that they were the best of the generation. I would think that group of four could equal any four boxers of any weight of any generation. He tries to put an end to his No Mas fight with Ray Leonard. To have got five stars I wanted to know about the fights - Hagler, Buchanan and Hearns. Good read but not as good as it should have been.

Very good book, It shows that boxers don't come from silver spoon families they come from rugged terrains, streets and from slums.

4.0 out of 5 stars Roberto Duran was one of my favourite boxer/punchers to follow
Reviewed in Canada on 25 May 2017
I have been a 'fight fan' for at least 70 years. And, Roberto Duran was one of my favourite boxer/punchers to follow. I was excited when my book arrived, new , and in pristine condition. I enjoyed the book very much, but as I read I came to find quite a few times, that for most exciting issues, there was a lengthy build up for an event/match which sadly, the event became anti-climatic. My experience with following Duran's career saw Duran as being the opposite of that. Duran was bigger than life, and he could never be anti-climatic. So, I imagine whomever Duran had helping him write the book is to blame. Duran was a fierce competitor . I did not see a lot of this in the book. But, it is a good chronicle of his fights, and his opponents.
