A county commission (also known as a board of county commissioners) is a group of elected officials charged with administering the county government in some states of the United States. County commissions are usually made up of three or more individuals. In some counties in Georgia and New Hampshire however, a sole commissioner holds the authority of the commission.
The commission acts as the executive of the local government, levies local taxes, administers county governmental services such as prisons, courts, public health oversight, property registration, building code enforcement, and public works such as road maintenance. The system has been supplanted in large part as disparate sparsely settled regions become urbanized and establish tighter local governmental control usually in municipalities, but in many more rural states the county commission retains more control and even in some urbanized areas may be responsible for significant government services.
William Penn, colonial founder of Pennsylvania is credited with originating the system of County Commissioners in the United States.
A county, abbreviated Cnty. (US) or Co. (UK and Ireland), is a geographical region of a country used for administrative or other purposes, in certain modern nations. The term is derived from the Old French conté or cunté denoting a jurisdiction under the sovereignty of a count (earl) or a viscount. The modern French is comté, and its equivalents in other languages are contea, contado, comtat, condado, Grafschaft, graafschap, Gau, etc. (cf. conte, comte, conde, Graf).
When the Normans conquered England, they brought the term with them. The Saxons had already established the districts that became the historic counties of England, calling them shires (many county names derive from the name of the county town with the word "shire" added on: for example, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire). The Vikings introduced the term earl (from Old Norse, jarl) to the British Isles. Thus, "earl" and "earldom" were taken as equivalent to the continental use of "count" and "county". So the later-imported term became a synonym for the native English word scir ([ʃiːr]) or, in Modern English, shire. Since a shire was an administrative division of the kingdom, the term "county" evolved to designate an administrative division of national government in most modern uses.

It is decided that there will be no more alcohol along the shores of Pineview and Causey reservoirs. Weber County leaders say they're hoping to make the areas safer. Weber County deputies say they're frequently overrun with accidents, near-drownings and a number of other problems that they believe are often tied to alcohol. Northern Utah Specialist Mike Anderson explains why they say simply putting more deputies out there wasn't enough. Aired: 05/30/2017 at 6:00 p.m.
This short clip is a Sheriff's van in more than 1 foot of water crossing a road near west Marriott-Slaterville. Some of the journalists behind the sheriff's van suffered damage to their cars. ... I don't know why they all decided to drive their own vehicles. I'd have ridden with the sheriffs. Much safer.
A new program coming to Weber County could allow DUI offenders to keep their licenses and avoid jail time. As Northern Utah Specialist Mike Anderson reports, this is something deputies say has proven to be effective in other states. Aired: 04/03/2017 at 6:00 p.m.
