The throw-away society is a human society strongly influenced by consumerism. The term describes a critical view of overconsumption and excessive production of short-lived or disposable items.
In its August 1, 1955 issue, pp 43ff, Life magazine published an article titled "Throwaway Living". This article has been cited as the source that first used the term "throw-away society".
Between the start of New York City waste collections in 1905 and 2005 there was a tenfold rise in "product waste" (packaging and old products), from 92 to 1,242 pounds (41.7 to 563.4 kilograms) per person per year. Containers and packaging now represent 32 percent of all municipal solid waste. Non-durable goods (products used less than three years) are 27 percent, and durable goods are 16 percent.
In 2002, Taiwan began taking action to reduce the use of disposable tableware at institutions and businesses, and to reduce the use of plastic bags. Yearly, the nation of 17.7 million people was producing 59,000 tons of disposable tableware waste and 105,000 tons of waste plastic bags, and increasing measures have been taken in the years since then to reduce the amount of waste. In 2013, Taiwan's Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) banned outright the use of disposable tableware in the nation's 968 schools, government agencies and hospitals. The ban is expected to eliminate 2,600 metric tons of waste yearly.
A society is a group of people involved in persistent social interaction, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. Societies are characterized by patterns of relationships (social relations) between individuals who share a distinctive culture and institutions; a given society may be described as the sum total of such relationships among its constituent members. In the social sciences, a larger society often evinces stratification or dominance patterns in subgroups.
Insofar as it is collaborative, a society can enable its members to benefit in ways that would not otherwise be possible on an individual basis; both individual and social (common) benefits can thus be distinguished, or in many cases found to overlap.
A society can also consist of like-minded people governed by their own norms and values within a dominant, larger society. This is sometimes referred to as a subculture, a term used extensively within criminology.
San Francisco (/sæn frənˈsɪskoʊ/), officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California and the only consolidated city-county in California. San Francisco encompasses a land area of about 46.9 square miles (121 km2) on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, which makes it the smallest county in the state. It has a density of about 18,187 people per square mile (7,022 people per km2), making it the most densely settled large city (population greater than 200,000) in the state of California and the second-most densely populated major city in the United States after New York City. San Francisco is the fourth-most populous city in California, after Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose, and the 13th-most populous city in the United States—with a Census-estimated 2014 population of 852,469. The city and its surrounding areas are known as the San Francisco Bay Area, and are a part of the larger OMB designated San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland combined statistical area, the fifth most populous in the nation with an estimated population of 8.6 million.
A police force is a constituted body of persons empowered by the state to enforce the law, protect property, and limit civil disorder. Their powers include the legitimized use of force. The term is most commonly associated with police services of a sovereign state that are authorized to exercise the police power of that state within a defined legal or territorial area of responsibility. Police forces are often defined as being separate from military or other organizations involved in the defense of the state against foreign aggressors; however, gendarmerie are military units charged with civil policing.
Law enforcement, however, constitutes only part of policing activity. Policing has included an array of activities in different situations, but the predominant ones are concerned with the preservation of order. In some societies, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, these developed within the context of maintaining the class system and the protection of private property. Many police forces suffer from police corruption to a greater or lesser degree. The police force is usually a public sector service, meaning they are paid through taxes.
Fort Worth is the 16th-largest city in the United States and the fifth-largest city in the state of Texas. Fort Worth is home to the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and several world-class museums. WINDSOR, Ontario — Police subdued a man with a TASER CEW in downtown Windsor Thursday night after he resisted arrest in a dramatic confrontation that was caught on video by a Windsor Star reporter. The video shows police telling the man to get on his knees & that he was under arrest for intoxication outside the bar a half flight down from street level. Though he started to kneel down he then stood & would not comply. Police again told him he was under arrest, that they did not want to hurt him, & to throw away his cigarette. Instead, he smoked it. When a number of police tried to arrest him, he pulled away & had almost slipped out of his jacket when an officer used a TASER CEW on him. He screamed & dropped to the ground, where he was handcuffed.
HOUSTON -- Three suspects were taken into custody after a dramatic car chase in north Houston. "The vehicle refused to stop," said Houston Police Sgt. Robert Tamayo. The chase started around 4pm as a traffic stop in the 110000 block of Homestead. Tamayo said the car had paper plates there were not readable. The suspects weaved in and out of traffic on the northbound lanes of the Eastex Freeway. Right after the suspects passed the Rankin Road exit, they pulled into the left shoulder lane and jumped out of the vehicle. Two suspects, one of them just 15 years old, then hurdled over concrete barriers, ran across the HOV lane and the southbound lanes of the freeway before jumping off the edge of the freeway. The two suspects darting across the southbound feeder lanes of the Eastex Freeway ...

Rave Culture is one of Britain’s great cultural exports, but after its first wave in the late eighties and early nineties, it was soon forced into the underground by stringent new laws and superclubs. But forward 25 years into in the midst of a nationwide purge on the nation’s nightlife, where nearly half of all British clubs have shut down in the last decade, and a new kind of scene has emerged. Clive Martin investigates this 21st century version of Rave, where young people break into disused spaces with the help of bolt-cutters and complicated squatting laws, to suck on balloons and go hard into the early morning. But with the police using increasingly extreme tactics to clamp down on these parties, and more than one fatality causing nationwide media panic, can the scene survive? Watc...
(03/11/17 14:30 PST) Read video description first to understand nature of this call. I understand this is a very lengthy scanner audio, but this is as short as it can get. What started out as an unknown disturbance call quickly escalated when officers arrived. Around 2:25 pm on March 11th, Edmonds officers we sent to sounds of a disturbance at an apartment in the 20900 block of 76 AVE W. When they arrived, they found the apartment resident locked outside of his unit. A neighbor had called because they heard things breaking inside. As it turns out, a former co-worker from years ago had shown up, entered the victim’s apartment and began destroying his property. This forced the victim to get out. When Edmonds patrol officers arrived, they tried to get the suspect to come out. He showed up at...
