A lye is a liquid obtained by leaching ashes (containing largely potassium carbonate or "potash"), or a strong alkali which is highly soluble in water producing caustic basic solutions. "Lye" is commonly the alternative name of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or historically potassium hydroxide (KOH).
Today, sodium hydroxide is commercially manufactured using a membrane cell chloralkali process. It is one of the highest volume industrial chemicals with world-wide annual production of 45 million tons in 1998. It is supplied in various forms such as flakes, pellets, microbeads, coarse powder or a solution.
Lyes are used to cure many types of food, including the traditional Nordic lutefisk, olives (making them less bitter), canned mandarin oranges, hominy, lye rolls, century eggs, and pretzels. They are also used as a tenderizer in the crust of baked Cantonese moon cakes, in "zongzi" (glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves), in chewy southern Chinese noodles popular in Hong Kong and southern China, and in Japanese ramen noodles. They are also present in Kutsinta.
A hydraulic press is a device (see machine press) using a hydraulic cylinder to generate a compressive force. It uses the hydraulic equivalent of a mechanical lever, and was also known as a Bramah press after the inventor, Joseph Bramah, of England. He invented and was issued a patent on this press in 1795. As Bramah (who is also known for his development of the flush toilet) installed toilets, he studied the existing literature on the motion of fluids and put this knowledge into the development of the press.
The hydraulic press depends on Pascal's principle: the pressure throughout a closed system is constant. One part of the system is a piston acting as a pump, with a modest mechanical force acting on a small cross-sectional area; the other part is a piston with a larger area which generates a correspondingly large mechanical force. Only small-diameter tubing (which more easily resists pressure) is needed if the pump is separated from the press cylinder.
Pascal's law: Pressure on a confined fluid is transmitted undiminished and acts with equal force on equal areas and at 90 degrees to the container wall.

I use the Chloralkali mercury process to turn NaCl into NaOH. I also use the excess chlorine to produce a bromine solution and I make activated mercury at one point. Thanks again to Julian Emmerling for this intro and outro music: If you want him to make something for you contact at j.n.e.sound@gmail.com
While this method will produce some hydroxide, it will be heavily contaminated by hypochlorite. For a much better method of making sodium hydroxide see my new video on a modified version of the chloroalkali process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjlfG1n2N2U Social media links: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thethoughtemporium Website: http://www.thethoughtemporium.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thethoughtemporium Twitter: @TTEchironex
I use caustic potassium lye, also known as caustic potash to dissolve chicken flesh. Since I am a chemical engineer I will periodically add in some awesome chemistry videos in addition to crushing things in my hydraulic press. First I don the appropriate protective gear to deal with such a caustic solution. Then I pour out about 200 mg of potassium hydroxide and add it to about 1.5 cups of water As I am adding the KOH the water instantly begins to boil as the KOH dissolving in water is highly exothermic. After I put in all of the KOH I measure the temperature of the water to be very near boiling, about 205°F. I then add the chicken wing into the caustic solution. I explain that the hydroxide ions will essentially turn the chicken into soap. This works by breaking down the fat molecule...

Here's the method I use to make wood ash lye. I gained an interest for this while reading the Laura Ingalls books to my daughters a couple of years ago. I decided to make soap like they did, and started saving my ash. With the help of the internet, I have made a successful batch of soap! I thought the soap would be merely sufficient, and I’d heard that wood ash lye soap was greasy. Well, the soap I made feels wonderful and I’m still waiting for the bars to cure. Later, I intend to make a video showing how I make the soap using the lye made in this video. I hope it's helpful.

I just love making homemade soap and it’s really pretty easy. I’m showing you the basic way to make it, but it’s possible to make lye soap with different kinds of oils and scents. I even get artistic with a lot of my soap and add lots of pretty designs. In this video, I talk about where to buy lye, what I use for molds, the difference between lard, tallow and some other oils, why distilled water works better than tap water and a lot more. I’m making cold process soap in this video, which needs to be left to dry and harden, but in fu...
This is how I make lye for making soap or drain cleaner. Boil the water for better results, or even boil the ash in the water first.
Lye drain cleaner is sodium hydroxide crystals. Wear rubber gloves, eye goggles and have good ventilation. You would only want to use crystals on a slow moving drain. For a completely clogged drain, use a liquid drain opener that is a base. Run warm or hot water first to warm up the pipes. When the water drains, pours a few tablespoons of the lye over the drain opening and dissolve with warm water. Let the solution work for a few minutes and then rinse with warm or hot water. Repeat if needed. Subscribe for new tips.
A little girl sits in her new dress
Alone on the cold concrete front steps
And cries to herself, wondering when
Or if, she'll ever see her father again
Why don't we try harder than last time
To dry our eyes and smile
Someday, oh I'll make time
Yeah maybe, but not tonight
I'm trying as hard as I
Can to believe you
Don't lie
A killer without a conscience cries
Alone in his cold bedroom at night
Perpetually asking why, oh why
Am I so lonely, while he sharpens his knives
Why don't we try harder than last time
To dry our eyes and smile
Someday, oh I'll make time
Yeah maybe, but not tonight
I'm trying as hard as I
Can to believe you
Don't lie
You don't get it
This is it, your last chance to dance
You don't get it, no
A father who left his daugher's side
And slowly exhales for the last time
Someday, oh I'll make time
Yeah maybe, but not tonight
I'm trying as hard as I
Can to believe you
Don't lie
Someday, oh I'll make time
Yeah maybe, but not tonight
I'm trying as hard as I
Can to believe you
I don't believe you
I want to believe you
Don't lie
