Jacmel, (Haitian Creole: Jakmèl; Spanish: Yáquimo) is a commune in southern Haiti founded by the Spanish in 1504 and repopulated by the French in 1698. It is the capital of the department of Sud-Est and has an estimated population of 40,000, while the municipality (commune) of Jacmel had a population of 137,966 at the 2003 Census. The town's name is derived from its indigenous Taíno name of Yaquimel. In 1925, Jacmel was dubbed as the "City of Light," becoming the first in the Caribbean to have electricity.
The city has well-preserved historical French colonial architecture that dates back from the early nineteenth century and has little changed. The town has been tentatively accepted as a World Heritage site and UNESCO reports that it has sustained damage in the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
The town was founded by Dominicans ("Compagnie de Saint-Domingue") in 1698 as the capital of the southeastern part of the French colony Saint-Domingue. The area now called Jacmel was Taíno territory, part of the Xaragua chiefdom ruled by cacique Bohechio. With the arrival of the French, and the later establishment of the town, the French renamed Yaquimel as Jacmel.

Twoubadou music is a very popular form of guitar-based Haitian music which was brought back by Haitian migrant laborers who went to work on Cuban sugar plantations at the turn of the century. True to the original Spanish troubadours, the music and its lyrics usually conjured up images of true love and lasting relationships. Although more popular during times past, today it is sometimes considered passé or only for the old folks. Although more recently, it has begun being eclipsed by more popular forms of Rasin and Konpa music, it is making a comeback even among groups like Mizik Mizik ("Blakawout') who are popular among the younger crowds.

Hello Lost Ones, and welcome to another episode of #TheLostLife. On this episode, I'm taking you back to Haiti, this time to the port city of Jacmel. Now better known for having one of the more intact and tourist centric cities in Haiti, Jacmel was once a bustling port for import and export in the Caribbean. One large export here was coffee, and as coffee was brought down from the hills, it was processed, sorted, packed, and sold in factories around the city. Present day, these factories are a row of ruins, and wandering the side streets of Jacmel away from the tourist shops and galleries would appear to be all abandoned and forgotten. But behind the crumbling facades and rusted iron doors lies a bit of life. With a local who took us into the factories, he showed us around the connecting f...

http://haitianhollywood.com “Haiti is full of beautiful beaches, beautiful waterfalls and beautiful caves. The country also offers a beautiful tropical sun and gigantic mountains. The soul of the Caribbean is alive in the brilliant works of Haitian artists and craftsmen. Haiti is a mosaic culture from a mixture of Indian, African and European practices inherited from the colonial system. Creativity lives Haitian art whether through painting, music, dance and crafts.” By: Ministry of Tourism.
