Beijing Consensus

The Beijing Consensus (also sometimes called the "China Model" or "Chinese Economic Model") is a term that refers to the political and especially economic policies of the People's Republic of China that began after the death of Mao Zedong and the rehabilitation of Deng Xiaoping (1976) and are thought to have contributed to China's eightfold growth in gross national product over two decades. The phrase "Beijing Consensus" was coined by Joshua Cooper Ramo to pose China's economic development model as an alternative — especially for developing countries — to the Washington Consensus of market-friendly policies promoted by the IMF, World Bank and U.S. Treasury.

The term has been described variously as the pragmatic use of innovation and experimentation in the service of "equitable, peaceful high-quality growth", and "defense of national borders and interests" (by Ramo); the use of "stable, if repressive, politics and high-speed economic growth". Others maintain that "it seems" there is "no consensus as to what it stands for" other than being an alternative to the neoliberal Washington Consensus; and that the term "is applied to anything that happens in Beijing, regardless of whether or not it has to do with a 'Chinese Model of Development,' or even with the People's Republic of China (PRC) per se."

Liu Wen

Liu Wen (simplified Chinese: 刘雯; traditional Chinese: 劉雯; pinyin: Liú Wén; born January 27, 1988) is a Chinese fashion model. She is the first model of East Asian descent to walk the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. In 2010, she became the first spokesmodel of East Asian descent for Estée Lauder, alongside Constance Jablonski and Joan Smalls. In 2012, The New York Times named her "China’s first bona fide supermodel". In 2013, she became the first Asian model to ever make Forbes magazine's annual highest-paid models list.

In an April 2014 article about social media's rise in the fashion industry, American Vogue remarked that she had "by far, the biggest social-media audience of any model". Models.com dubbed her as the first ever Asian "New Supermodel" in July 2014. And in October of the same year, Liu became the first person in the world to showcase an Apple Watch on a magazine cover when she graced Vogue China's November 2014 issue.

In April 2015, she and South Korean singer Choi Siwon participated in a Chinese spin-off of the South Korean variety show We Got Married.

1977: Founding

Victoria's Secret was founded by Tufts University and Stanford Graduate School of Business alumnus Roy Raymond, and his wife Gaye, in San Francisco, California, on June 12, 1977. The original store was in Palo Alto, California, at Stanford Shopping Center. The original store was moved to a larger location within the same center in 1996. The original store was located next to the Ralph Lauren Polo store facing El Camino Real. It had a bay window, one bra wall, one panty wall, one dressing room (the other was used for storage,) and a loft for the manager's office. Above the merchandise walls, on both sides, was a large space with antiques, hat boxes, bust forms, etc. Despite small size of the store, it did a booming business.
