Los Angeles (i/lɒs ˈændʒəlᵻs/ loss AN-jə-ləs or loss AN-jə-liss) (Spanish for "The Angels"), officially the City of Los Angeles and often known by its initials L.A., is the second-largest city in the United States after New York City, the most populous city in the state of California, and the county seat of Los Angeles County.
Situated in Southern California, Los Angeles is known for its mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, sprawling metropolis, and as a major center of the American entertainment industry. Los Angeles lies in a large coastal basin surrounded on three sides by mountains reaching up to and over 10,000 feet (3,000 m).
Historically home to the Chumash and Tongva, Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with the rest of what would become Alta California. The city was officially founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. The city experienced rapid growth with the discovery of oil.
Organic farming is a form of agriculture that relies on techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost, and biological pest control. Depending on whose definition is used, organic farming uses fertilizers and pesticides (which include herbicides, insecticides and fungicides) if they are considered natural (such as bone meal from animals or pyrethrin from flowers), but it excludes or strictly limits the use of various methods (including synthetic petrochemical fertilizers and pesticides; plant growth regulators such as hormones; antibiotic use in livestock; genetically modified organisms; human sewage sludge; and nanomaterials) in pursuit of goals including sustainability, openness, independence, health, and safety.
Organic agricultural methods are internationally regulated and legally enforced by many nations, based in large part on the standards set by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), an international umbrella organization for organic farming organizations established in 1972. The USDA definition as of April 1995 is:

A quick video showcasing the organic produce grown at Los Angeles Organic Farm. Local, sustainable and organic, the goal is to grow food from seed to store in under 100 miles. This not only helps the environment and our food's carbon footprint but also secures local jobs in our communities.
This is an Urban Food Farm that we installed in the back parking lot of the building where I live in Los Angeles. It's only 8x8 foot print but takes over 170 plants. You can see how we installed the greenhouse kit, the greenhouse polycarbonate walls and all the components that go after, the drip irrigation, hydroponic gutters, coco coir growing medium... It took about 2.5 days to install the entire vegetable growing solution. We got some plants brought from the other demo in Santa Barbara. The cilantro, parsley and zucchini suffered a bit during transportation and they waited outside for a few hours while we installed the hydroponic channels and drip irrigation. This is a true city farm. 8x8 footprint small but 64 feet of growing space! The center floor hydroponic gutters offer 24 feet of...

Over 6,000 pounds of food per year, on 1/10 acre located just 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. The Dervaes family grows over 400 species of plants, 4,300 pounds of vegetable food, 900 chicken and 1,000 duck eggs, 25 lbs of honey, plus seasonal fruits throughout the year. From 1/10th of an acre, four people manage to get over 90% of their daily food and the family reports earnings of $20,000 per year (AFTER they eat from what is produced). This is done without the use of the expensive & destructive synthetic chemicals associated with industrial mono-cropping, while simultaneously improving the fertility and overall condition of the land being used to grow this food on. Scaled up to an acre, that would equal $200,000 per year! To follow the Dervaes and their Urban Homesteading...

Sunset Boulevard has become shorthand for what Los Angeles represents in the collective imagination. Most people do not see Los Angeles themselves, and instead imagine the world of fame and affluence they see on their TV screens. However, the reality of Los Angeles is not one glamorous place or setting – instead, it is a gigantic, diverse and complicated city, divided by its disparate neighborhoods. To know it you have to travel from east to west, across colliding communities that evoke both glitz and grit. In this episode of City Guides we drive along Sunset Boulevard, stopping at venues and speaking with native Angelenos about the economic and cultural influences that have defined and transformed their neighborhoods. Documentary Germany/USA 2012 English & German with English subtitles. Directed by Boris Castro & Karla Lemus A group of bicycle aficionados from Hamburg, Sankt Pauli traveled to Los Angeles, to cross the city for 12 days into all cardinal directions. They cruised through the barrios of East L.A., to the beaches of Venice, climbed the Hollywood Hills and discovered a forgotten velodrome in Encino. They worked as volunteers at the Midnight Mission on Skid Row, where 15,000 people live homeless and as a contrast they face the madness of lethal weapons at the L.A. Gun range in downtown. The movie is not just showing Los Angeles from an unknown perspective, it also puts up the question how one can cross this ecological and cultural desert. But the group is not alone, because L.A. shaped a rem...
