Los Angeles (i/lɒs ˈændʒəlᵻs/ loss AN-jə-ləs or loss AN-jə-liss) (Spanish for "The Angels"), officially the City of Los Angeles and often known by its initials L.A., is the second-largest city in the United States after New York City, the most populous city in the state of California, and the county seat of Los Angeles County.
Situated in Southern California, Los Angeles is known for its mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, sprawling metropolis, and as a major center of the American entertainment industry. Los Angeles lies in a large coastal basin surrounded on three sides by mountains reaching up to and over 10,000 feet (3,000 m).
Historically home to the Chumash and Tongva, Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with the rest of what would become Alta California. The city was officially founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. The city experienced rapid growth with the discovery of oil.
A convention center (American English; conference centre outside the USA) is a large building that is designed to hold a convention, where individuals and groups gather to promote and share common interests. Convention centers typically offer sufficient floor area to accommodate several thousand attendees. Very large venues, suitable for major trade shows, are sometimes known as exhibition centres. Convention centers typically have at least one auditorium and may also contain concert halls, lecture halls, meeting rooms, and conference rooms. Some large resort area hotels include a convention center.
The Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) is a convention center in the southwest portion of downtown Los Angeles. The LACC hosts annual events such as the Los Angeles Auto Show and Anime Expo, and is best known to video game fans as host to the Electronic Entertainment Expo, also known as E3. Its newest major events are the Primetime Emmy Awards' Governors Ball, Microsoft WPC, Abilities Expo, and frequent TV show and movie filmings (notably as a spaceport for Starship Troopers and used for the climactic fight scene in Rush Hour).
The Convention Center, designed by architect Charles Luckman, opened in 1971 and expanded in 1993 and 1997. It was originally built as a rectangle building, between Pico Boulevard and 11th Street (now Chick Hearn Ct.) on Figueroa Street. The northeast portion of the Center was demolished in 1997 to make way for the Staples Center. The Convention Center Annex of green glass and white steel frames, mainly on the south side of Pico, was designed by architect James Ingo Freed.
Angeles, a Spanish name, meaning angels, may refer to:
"L.A. 2017" is a 1971 episode of the NBC television series The Name of the Game. Sometimes referred to as "Los Angeles: AD 2017" (the name of Philip Wylie's subsequent novel based on his script) or "Los Angeles 2017", this was a science fiction piece, shot for only $375,000. The director, the 24-year-old Steven Spielberg, used imaginative camera angles to drive his first movie-length television episode across and remarked in later years that the show "opened a lot of doors for me".
This was the sixteenth episode of the third season, and the cast included Barry Sullivan, Edmond O'Brien, and (in a brief cameo) Spielberg's friend Joan Crawford. The episode is 76 minutes long (90 minutes including commercials). The episode has never been released on home video, neither as a stand-alone film, nor as a part of the series. Presenting the story as a dream was the only way that Wylie's science fiction tale could be fitted into the peculiar format of The Name of the Game, a show about the magazine business set in the present and rotating between Gene Barry, Tony Franciosa, and Robert Stack (and in the third season also featuring Peter Falk, Robert Wagner, and Robert Culp).

The slanted walls made furniture arrangement awkward and didn’t offer much insulation or a place to run electricity and pipes. But Fasiska pushed forward, embracing the strangeness and creating an open-plan home with enough spunk to live up to the stunning exposed architecture.

A haunting and fascinating time capsule of Los Angeles in 1946 I added an evocative soundtrack and slowed down the footage (supplied by Getty). This was actually process footage that was filmed for “Down to Earth.” in April, 1946 and was captured by a train or a bus moving very rapidly. But now with the images slowed down you can now see the movie "Gilda" playing at the RKO theater (01:30) a shot of The Pacific Seas Clifton's Cafeteria (03:34), on S. Olive. , "The Outlaw" playing at Music Hall theater (07:51), and The Nat King Cole trio playing (09:00) at some theater. I also believe that's Westlake Park (MacArthur Park) at 03:22. I wanted to create a dream like sequence and ethereal tone for this clip, rather then the big band music I've used in the past. I believe the result is quite...

Sunset Boulevard has become shorthand for what Los Angeles represents in the collective imagination. Most people do not see Los Angeles themselves, and instead imagine the world of fame and affluence they see on their TV screens. However, the reality of Los Angeles is not one glamorous place or setting – instead, it is a gigantic, diverse and complicated city, divided by its disparate neighborhoods. To know it you have to travel from east to west, across colliding communities that evoke both glitz and grit. In this episode of City Guides we drive along Sunset Boulevard, stopping at venues and speaking with native Angelenos about the economic and cultural influences that have defined and transformed their neighborhoods. Canadian filmmaker Apolla Echino was tired of seeing men get to have all the fun in adventure films and is on a one-woman mission to change that around. Her documentary series, A Woman’s Guide To The World, has taken her aboard a tall ship sailing to Antarctica and into the wildest corners of the Amazon jungle. But it’s the latest chapter, a wintertime surf trip across the stunning South Island of New Zealand that has attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers from across the globe. The film charts Apolla's journey from the breathtaking Kaikoura coastline, south to the Catlins and west to the wild and remote Jackson Bay. Apolla even chances upon a freshwater break at the mouth of the Buller River - a rare event that only occurs a dozen times a year. In the freezing New Zealand winter, A...

Documentary Germany/USA 2012 English & German with English subtitles. Directed by Boris Castro & Karla Lemus A group of bicycle aficionados from Hamburg, Sankt Pauli traveled to Los Angeles, to cross the city for 12 days into all cardinal directions. They cruised through the barrios of East L.A., to the beaches of Venice, climbed the Hollywood Hills and discovered a forgotten velodrome in Encino. They worked as volunteers at the Midnight Mission on Skid Row, where 15,000 people live homeless and as a contrast they face the madness of lethal weapons at the L.A. Gun range in downtown. The movie is not just showing Los Angeles from an unknown perspective, it also puts up the question how one can cross this ecological and cultural desert. But the group is not alone, because L.A. shaped a rem...

That's gonna protect you
They will still neglect you
But I'll always love you
Said I've always loved you
(So come on home)
Said I've always loved you
So get back in your car and head west to California
The sun will be shining
And we could be dining by the ocean blue
