Baker McKenzie taps Andrew Stewart to run IP, tech and media

Baker McKenzie partner Andrew Stewart has been elevated to national head of intellectual property, technology, media and content for the law firm.

A media and technology specialist, Stewart spent six years as senior corporate counsel at free-to-air broadcaster Nine Network and joined Baker McKenzie as partner in 2007.

Stewart has been involved in a suite of high profile work, including work for Hollywood studios Warner Bros, Paramount, Universal, Sony, Disney, 21st Century Fox and Australia's Village Roadshow in the first test of Australia's anti-piracy legislation passed by the government in 2015.

The landmark ruling means content owners can ask the court to order internet service providers, such as Telstra, Optus, TPG and Vocus to block copyright infringing sites, such as The Pirate Bay, for $50 per site.

He acted for former Greens leader Christine Milne, successfully defending a defamation claim against her by Frederick Toben.

He has also acted for Network Ten and Fox Sports across a range of matters in recent times.
