Santander Cycles is a public bicycle hire scheme in London, United Kingdom. The scheme's bicycles are popularly known as Boris Bikes, after Boris Johnson, who was the Mayor of London when the scheme was launched.
The operation of the scheme is contracted by Transport for London to Serco. The scheme is sponsored, with Santander UK being the main sponsor from April 2015.Barclays Bank was the first sponsor from 2010 to March 2015, when the service was branded as Barclays Cycle Hire.
Credit for developing and enacting the scheme has been a source of debate. Johnson has taken credit for the plan, although the initial concept was announced by his predecessor Ken Livingstone, during the latter's term in office. Livingstone has said that the programme would herald a "cycling and walking transformation in London" and Johnson said that he "hoped the bikes would become as common as black cabs and red buses in the capital".
A study showed cyclists using the scheme are three times less likely to be injured per trip than cyclists in London as a whole, possibly due to motorists giving cycle hire users more road space than they do other cyclists. Moreover, recent customer research showed that 49 per cent of Cycle Hire members say that the scheme has prompted them to start cycling in London.

Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson (born 19 June 1964) is a British politician, popular historian and journalist who has served as Mayor of London since 2008 and as Member of Parliament (MP) for Uxbridge and South Ruislip since 2015. Johnson previously served as the MP for Henley from 2001 until 2008. A member of the Conservative Party, Johnson considers himself a One Nation Conservative and has been described as a libertarian due to his association with both economically liberal and socially liberal policies.
Born in New York City to upper middle class English parents, Johnson was educated at the European School of Brussels, Ashdown House School, and Eton College. He read Classics at Balliol College, Oxford, where he was a member of the Bullingdon Club and was elected President of the Oxford Union in 1986. Beginning his career in journalism at The Times, he later became The Daily Telegraph's Brussels correspondent, with his articles exerting a strong influence on growing Eurosceptic sentiment among the British right-wing. He became assistant editor from 1994 to 1999 before taking the editorship of The Spectator from 1999 to 2005. Joining the Conservatives, he was elected to the House of Commons as MP for Henley in 2001. Making regular television appearances as well as continuing with his journalism and book writing, Johnson became one of the most conspicuous politicians in the country. Under the Conservative leaders Michael Howard and David Cameron, Johnson served on the opposition front bench, first as Shadow Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries and then for Higher Education.

The London Cycle Hire scheme is a great and affordable way to get around London. Joolz shows you how to use them in this video and gives some helpful tips on what not to do. Most Londoners call them Boris Bikes after Boris Johnson who was the mayor of London when the scheme was initiated and they have sponsors who change periodically. At time of filming it was called the Santander Cycle Hire scheme or Santander Cycles. If you do it right you only have to pay two pounds to hire it for 24 hours but you must only use it in 30 minute stages unless you want to be charged more money. Each 30 minutes is free but if you don't dock it you get charged another £2 per 30 minutes. London's cycle hire scheme has been running since 2010, and has expanded a lot since then. Two maintenance depots repair and manage the distribution of bikes around London. We went to have a look behind the scenes at the Penton Street depot, near King's Cross. One thing we love about the scheme is that it's the only form of public transport in London that's 'open' on Christmas Day. POLL! Let us know with a simple 'yes' or 'no' by clicking the (i) button if you've ever ridden a cycle hire bike. MORE from Londonist.com ... Santander’s ambassadors Jenson Button and Jessica Ennis-Hill suit up as rebel alliance fighters and stormtroopers to face off on Santander Cycles. The film marks the launch of Santander Cycles new partnership with innovative cycle safety start up Blaze (www.blaze.cc). Funded by Santander UK, as part of the commitment to improve London’s cycle hire scheme, in 2016 all Santander Cycles will be fitted with Blaze Laserlights to make them more visible to drivers and other road users. The announcement follows a successful pilot which saw 75% of cyclists who were riding bikes fitted with a Blaze Laserlight reporting that the lights made them feel more confident. The lights work by projecting a green laser six feet in front of the bikes to make cyclists more visible.
Santander Cycles is tackling the fears of darker nights by introducing a ground-breaking laser innovation to the Santander Cycles scheme. The Blaze Laserlight™ - which is being largely funded by Santander – projects the image of a cycle onto the roadway 6 metres in front of the rider, helping drivers of vehicles become more aware of cyclists, especially those on their near side. The Blaze Laserlight™ also aims to boost the confidence of cyclists on the roads. To promote the roll out, Santander has teamed up with newly retired Olympic Gold, Silver and Double World Heptathlete Champion Jessica Ennis-Hill and former Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button to create a short Halloween-themed film called ‘The Blaze Witch Project’ highlighting the benefits of the Blaze Laserlight™. Boris Johnson speaks at the launch of Santander Cycles. In February we announced Santander UK's sponsorship of Transport for London’s (TfL) Hire Cycle Scheme. This is a seven-year partnership launching in May, working alongside TfL to make cycling in London more simple, personal and fair. You can expect us to make Santander Cycles a better experience. We’re making it easier to hire cycles, improving things for the user with a new app, and giving cashback on cycle hire through the 1I2I3 Credit Card, and much more.
