At Seven o'Clock this morning bailiffs, herded by police broke into our squat and began their eviction process. A process of intimidation and violence, that we are all too familiar with now. The same process that they use to systematically harass, bully and assault the homeless community daily on the already dangerous streets that they inhabit.

A homeless resident of the squat, in reaction to losing his home, his bed and his safety climbed onto the roof in a show of protest ...and solidarity with all other displaced people and those he had shared a home with for the two past weeks. For a few hours we waited outside as bailiffs rampaged through our home with such a vengeance that, in their uniquely gorilla like fashion, they managed to shower their equally vile and incompetent colleagues with shards of glass.

During the process of this the university management, in their frighteningly haunting fashion, dragged themselves out of the gutter to video our friend, precariously balanced on the edge of the roof, whilst pointing and laughing. Again exposing their arrogance and disdain in the face of poverty, homelessness and everything that isn't money for their own pockets.

At around midday the fire brigade turned up to escort our friend off of the roof, which then proved unnecessary as the bailiffs and Police decided to drag him down through the roof light in the ceiling. They arrested him on charges unknown, but prisoner support is ongoing with updates pending, and carted him off to Hollingbury holding cells. Police then began to act in line with their standard tactics, brutalising the remaining protesters in order to clear them from the road, with one officer who could only be pumped full of cocaine, becoming so irate and violent that their commanding officer made him leave. The sergeant on duty advised us to file a complaint.

After this incident and after our friend was carted off to the cells, a small group went to protest at the University, experiencing the student care and protection at the hands of the security guards as they choked one activist and threw another to the ground.

Our position on the university is this:
The University of Brighton has consistently exposed their hatred of vulnerable peoples and communities, from women, to the homeless and from survivors to migrants. They have demonstrated this, several times over, and their rhetoric of inclusivity, tolerance and progressive politics is transparent and empty. They have declared war on everyone, bar yuppy students and their bank accounts, and we, the community, will answer.

To the rest of the enemies of the poor, hear this: we have lost this building, but we have gained a network of strength, skills and diversity. A network that will continue, to the end, our struggle; the struggle of those displaced, vulnerable and persecuted communities and peoples. We will continue until we win, and people can sleep safely, eat well and be safe in our city again.

Solidarity.
