Video of the Ranville War Cemetery in Calvados, France. The Allied offensive in north-western Europe began with the Normandy landings of 6 June 1944.
Ranville was the first village to be liberated in France when the bridge over the Caen Canal was captured intact in the early hours of 6 June by troops of the 6th Airborne Division, who were landed nearby by parachute and glider. Many of the division's casualties are buried in Ranville War Cemetery and the adjoining churchyard
The CEMETERY contains 2,235 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 97 of them unidentified. There are also 330 German graves and a few burials of other nationalities.
The CHURCHYARD contains 47 Commonwealth burials, one of which is unidentified, and one German grave.

Elaine Ranville came to the kitchen and sang the Waltz Of The Angels. Her Husband Fred was her biggest fan and her biggest inspiration. So she dedicates this song to his memory. Ranville
Ranville is a commune in the Calvados department in the Basse-Normandie region in northwestern France.
Ranville was the first French village liberated on D-Day. The village was liberated by the British 13th Parachute Battalion, commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Luard. The château du Heaume in the village was subsequently used by the headquarters of the British 6th Airborne Division.
The village features heavily in the book "13 - Lucky For Some" which is about the history of the 13th (Lancashire) Parachute Battalion. There are many then and now photographs as well as maps and diagrams of battles that took place in the region.

Ranville was the first village to be liberated in France when the bridge over the Caen Canal was captured intact in the early hours of 6 June by troops of the 6th Airborne Division, who were landed nearby by parachute and glider. Many of the division's casualties are buried in Ranville War Cemetery and the adjoining churchyard
The CEMETERY contains 2,235 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 97 of them unidentified. There are also 330 German graves and a few burials of other nationalities.
The CHURCHYARD contains 47 Commonwealth burials, one of which is unidentified, and one German grave.

Laos ~ Sa Paper
The Sa tree grows in the mountainous regions of Loas and has been used traditionally to make good quality, durable paper. There are several Sa paper makers working from their homes in the villages of Laos. The bark of the Sa tree is soaked and boiled in water until the fibers break apart. The fiber is then mixed in clean water and floated onto a deckle and mould. The wet paper is decorated with leaves, flowers and petals before setting in the sun to dry. The traditional skills of paper making have been passed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years and provides vital income for the families. On Abbot Kinney's birthday, November 16th, the community of Venice CA came together to take part in this experiment. The Sa tree grows in the mountainous regions of Loas and has been used traditionally to make good quality, durable paper. There are several Sa paper makers working from their homes in the villages of Laos.
The bark of the Sa tree is soaked and boiled in water until the fibers break apart. The fiber is then mixed in clean water and floated onto a deckle and mould. The wet paper is decorated with leaves, flowers and petals before setting in the sun to dry.
The traditional skills of paper making have been passed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years and provides vital income for the families.
