Baby born by emergency caesarean after Hallam car crash injures mother

A baby has been born by emergency caesarean section after the mother suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash in Melbourne's outer east on Wednesday afternoon.

Doctors worked to deliver the baby and to protect the mother, after the crash in Hallam between a car and a truck shortly before 3pm. The baby was born with non-life threatening injuries.

The 24-year-old mother, from Hallam, was a passenger in the car when the crash occurred at the intersection of the Princes Highway and Princes Domain Drive.

The woman was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. According to police the woman is now in a stable condition.

Police said a 52-year-old Hallam woman who was driving the car was also injured, and was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police are investigating the crash and have urged witnesses to the collision to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The truck driver, a 50-year-old Tynong man, was not injured in the crash.
