BOTH WORLDS Memory Rendered Visible 1998

by request
hardcore featuring the lead singer from Cro-Mags

Artist Biography by

Serving as lead singer for the classic New York hardcore outfit the Cro-Mags and roadie for the legendary Bad Brains, Both Worlds vocalist John Joseph has quite an impressive resumé to his credit. Before the 1998 release of their debut full-length, the band (which also includes guitarist A.J. Novello, bassist Eddie Coen, and drummer Pokey) released an EP in 1996 entitled Beyond Zero Gravity (on the Another Planet label). Opening slots on cross-country tours for the likes of the Misfits, Helmet, and Life of Agony soon followed, helping the group to grow tighter musically and improve their stage show. After being signed to Roadrunner, Both Worlds hooked up with respected producer Michael Barbiero (Soundgarden, CIV, etc.), who handled the studio chores for their debut, Memory Rendered Visible. Fans expecting a Cro-Mags Part Two sound may be disappointed, since BW combines their hardcore roots with melodicism and more conventional singing.

SCOTT 4 Recorded in State LP 1998

Artist Biography by

Elektro Akoustic Und Volksmechanik
Electronic cowpunks Scott 4 -- the trio of vocalist Scott Blixen, guitarist John Moody and drummer Ed Tilley -- formed in early 1997; after debuting at a local folk club, they were soon signed to the independent label Satellite, issuing their debut EP Elektro Akoustic and Volksmechanik that August. The record's unique synthesis of punk, country and electronica immediately found critical favor, and the subsequent "Deutsche LP Record" was named "Single of the Week" in Melody Maker. After touring in support of the High Llamas, Scott 4 issued their full-length debut Recorded in State LP in early 1998, signing to major label V2 soon after.

Well and Good

AllMusic Review by

Since the fusion of a power trio with enthusiastic, positive and energetic rock dreams the eternal existence of kinetic power pop was insured. With so simple of a formula and a lack of daring songwriting or impressive chops, is it possible to pull a good slab out of this soup? Certainly, it is all about arrangement. If every band member plays all the time, there is no arrangement and the recording is fit to be discarded. In other situations, there is hope. Zoinks has a lot of hope and as much heart. A perky, warm bassline trades with a strident, distorted guitar. The drums initiate the changes in temp and keep the pace at a lively clip. The vocals are bright and vigorous. Often, a few members of this mix bow out and let the rest take the spotlight. That keeps things interesting and before you know it, the CD is over and the smile remains.

TELSTAR PONIES In the Space of a Few Minutes 1995

Discogs

Artist Biography by

After David Keenan (guitar, vocals) departed from 18 Wheeler in 1994, he formed the Telstar Ponies in Glasgow, Scotland, with singer Rachel Devine, Gavin Laird (guitar, vocals), and former Teenage Fanclub drummer Brendan O'Hare. In 1995, the Telstar Ponies released their first album, In the Space of a Few Minutes. The Telstar Ponies were originally viewed by some critics as a weak knock-off of Teenage Fanclub. However, by their second LP, 1996's Voices From the New Music, the band had become more experimental, not bound by any genre boundaries. The group's intense live performances, often involving improvisation, helped inspire post-rock acts such as Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor!. But when O'Hare and Laird left the band in 1997, they stopped recording; instead, they unleashed side projects like Phantom Engineer, lonecop, Macrocosmica, Fiend, and Rainspies. The group reunited in 1999 and added bassist Raymond Prior to their lineup.
