Free trade is a policy followed by some international markets in which countries' governments do not restrict imports from, or exports to, other countries. Free trade is exemplified by the European Economic Area and the North American Free Trade Agreement, which have established open markets. Most nations are today members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) multilateral trade agreements. However, most governments still impose some protectionist policies that are intended to support local employment, such as applying tariffs to imports or subsidies to exports. Governments may also restrict free trade to limit exports of natural resources. Other barriers that may hinder trade include import quotas, taxes, and non-tariff barriers, such as regulatory legislation.

What is globalization? Is globalization a good thing or not. Well, I have an answer that may not surprise you: It's complicated. This week, Jacob and Adriene will argue that globalization is, in aggregate, good. Free trade and globalization tend to provide an overall benefit, and raises average incomes across the globe. The downside is that it isn't good for every individual in the system. In some countries, manufacturing jobs move to places where labor costs are lower. And some countries that receive the influx of jobs aren't prepared to deal with it, from a regulatory standpoint. Anyway, Jacob and Adriene can explain the whole thing to you in 10 minutes. *** Crash Course is on Patreon! The strategies used to increase trade among states by reducing or eliminating trade barriers.
The Story of Cap & Trade is a fast-paced, fact-filled look at the leading climate solution being discussed at Copenhagen and on Capitol Hill. Host Annie Leonard introduces the energy traders and Wall Street financiers at the heart of this scheme and reveals the "devils in the details" in current cap and trade proposals: free permits to big polluters, fake offsets and distraction from what’s really required to tackle the climate crisis. If you’ve heard about Cap & Trade, but aren’t sure how it works (or who benefits), this is the film is for you.
For one fantastic weekend, Showtime was free to the masses. We put together a very modular package to help them promote the virtues of the channel during that weekend. Our approach used casual language and referenced the cut and paste of the editing process. There were a ton of spots, so we’ve included Quicktimes of a montage and also one of the :15s spots. With David Cameron's blessing, the biggest free trade agreement in history, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership is currently being negotiated between the European Commission on behalf of member states and the US government. With tariffs between the two blocks already low, the deal is likely to focus on non-tariff barriers to trade such as "harmonising" regulations. What are the likely costs and benefits? 12 July 2014 UK day of action: http://www.nottip.org.uk
Trade My Motor are one of the UK's biggest online car buying services. Since 2009 they have provided hassle free sale, secure payment and fair prices to the members of the public wanting to sell their car. With their growing popularity, Trade My Motor wanted to further extend their audience and commissioned us to create an animated advert for broadcast across UK television. After the initial briefing, we took the advert from initial concept through to scriptwriting, storyboarding and animation. We also collaborated with leading sound design studio, 80 Hertz to bring the visuals and script together. The advert ran across multiple areas of the Channel 4 network including Dave and Watch. http://thedrawingroomcreative.com/work/motion/trade-my-motor/

Milton Friedman speaks on free trade. If free trade is so good, why is protectionism so popular? Part of the answer lies in a simple political principle - interests that are concentrated (those of the producer) are more politically effective than interests that are diffuse (those of the consumer). Protection does not create jobs or move goods; rather, it forces us to expend greater effort to get the goods we produce, since they cost more to produce at home than abroad. The balance of payments can take care of itself, provided we do not manipulate foreign exchange markets to put an artificial value on the dollar. The right solution is to dismantle systematically our own trade barriers and set an example for the rest of the world. Check out our Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/...
We look at what it means for developing countries when the US decides to take a protectionist stance. The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) was the largest ever US-proposed trade deal and took years to put together, but US President-elect Donald Trump has promised to withdraw from the deal on his very first day in office. The TPP, signed by 12 countries in February 2016, covers 40 percent of the world's economy. But all 12 nations need to ratify it, and Trump's comments suggest that this will not happen. As the United States, the world's biggest economy and the champion of free trade for the past century, is about to back away from closer global economic integration, analysts question whether China has what it takes to be the world's new champion of free trade. While China has not signed...
We are live at the Austin Institute to witness a debate between Dr. Michael Hudson and Dr. Farhad Rassekh, on free trade vs nationalism. Austin Institute: http://www.austin-institute.org/events/free-trade-vs-nationalism/ Traditionally, American presidents have supported free trade--or at least less restricted trade. But the new administration has invoked tariffs and possible renegotiation of longstanding trade agreements. Academic economists are all but unanimous on the benefits of free trade, but a few dissenters say free traders live in a fantasy land, ignoring economic reality. Dr. Michael Hudson is Professor of Economics at UMKC (Kansas City) and Peking University (Beijing). He is the author of Trade, Development and Foreign Debt (2002), "America’s Protectionist Takeoff,” and mos...

US President Donald Trump has been in office for less than a week, but he's already working towards fulfilling his campaign promises. He's signed several executive orders in his first few days into the job. Many of them undoing laws and deals that were put in place by former President Barack Obama. On Monday, Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which is a trade deal the Obama administration had worked on for several years. It calls for lower taxes on trade between member countries. Obama had said this would give the US an economic advantage over China, which was not part of the agreement. But Trump insists withdrawal from the deal is a great thing for American workers. But does he risk isolating his country? And who s...

While the United States has a 70-year history of free trade, not everyone agrees that the benefits outweigh the costs. The debate on free trade has been brought to center stage with the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, a watershed moment which will decide where the US and major countries around the world go next with trade. On October 6, the Mercatus Center hosted a Capitol Hill discussion on Congress and the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement. Among the topics covered were free trade's effects on manufacturing, whether or not trade deficits matter, and the effects of NAFTA and other agreements like it. Event Speakers: Donald J. Boudreaux, Co-Director of the Program on the American Economy and Globalization, the Mercatus Center Daniel Griswold, Co-Director of the Program on the ...
An increase in domestic manufacturing output and a proportionally greater domestic investment in manufacturing does not necessarily mean an increase in domestic manufacturing jobs; this increase may simply reflect greater automation and higher productivity. Although the U.S. total civilian employment may have grown by almost 15 million in between 1993 and 2001, manufacturing jobs only increased by 476,000 in the same time period. Furthermore from 1994 to 2007, net manufacturing employment has declined by 3,654,000, and during this period several other free trade agreements have been concluded or expanded. In 2000, U.S. government subsidies to the corn sector totaled $10.1 billion. These subsidies have led to charges of dumping, which jeopardizes Mexican farms and the country's food self-s...
Where wounded hearts lie dying victim's all a broken back
I take my walk down lonely Skid Row street
It's not in the best part of the town but it caused to those like me
Who tried to lose their bad memories on blue lonely Skid Row street
Blue lonely Skid Row street
I wander blindly through the town I just follow my feet
But I wind up where hard liquor flows so free
For there I know I'll find someone who feels the same as me
For broken dreams and mem'ries meet on blue lonely Skid Row street
Blue lonely Skid Row street
They say I'll look back on it all at last someday
For letting my foolish heart control my mind
They say in time true love I'll find in someone that I meet
Who'll give me hope a cause to leave blue lonely Skid Row street
