Each town along the Gold Coast waterfront exhibits its own personality. To indulge in a luxurious getaway, head to chic Broadbeach. For killer waves and vibrant nightlife, hit up Surfers Paradise. To unwind with locals away from the crowds, you might prefer Coolangatta.
No matter where you decide to spend your break, you will only be a short distance from stunning surf and swim beaches, family-friendly activities and endless chances to wine, dine and shop.
As you would expect, there are endless holiday rental options on the Gold Coast waterfront, from sleek condos in towering oceanfront complexes to spacious family homes close to leafy parks.
Perhaps the most famous Gold Coast beach is the 3 km stretch of golden sand that borders Surfers Paradise. While youâre here, learn to surf or battle it out in the waves with the pros. You could also hire a jetski and explore the open water and even a deserted island close to shore.
Calmer Broadbeach, favoured by families, is patrolled, with two swimming areas. In the evenings, watch the sun set over the ocean. The water does get rougher in some spots, so youâll see surfers and other watersport enthusiasts here, too. Kite surfing is very popular in Broadbeach.
Coolangatta offers somewhat quieter beaches, where locals congregate. Spend some time away from the crowds at Kirra Beach or snap some shots of picturesque Snapper Rocks, a beach given this name for its waves colliding with rocks close to shore. This beach has good breaks and is becoming increasingly popular with surfers.
If youâre traveling with the kids, there are numerous activities and attractions to keep them occupied. Start off by visiting Sea World. Children of all ages can hop on themed rides right next to the ocean, observe animals from polar bears to penguins and watch a variety of shows.
Whale watching is another family favourite. Join a variety of tours that take you out onto the water with professional guides. Cruises tend to depart in the morning, bringing you back to shore before lunch. With many operators, humpback whale sightings are almost 100% guaranteed.
The Gold Coast has parks in each town, with Broadbeach especially being known for its green spaces. Stroll along the foreshore to discover two parks with playgrounds, Kurrawa and Pratten. Watch the kids play as you take in stunning ocean views.
During your Gold Coast getaway, you can shop til you drop, and then refuel at one of the countless restaurants. Spend some time in Broadbeach for elegant dining and upscale shopping. Broadbeach boasts one of the largest malls in the country, Pacific Fair.
Southport is the Gold Coastâs Central Business District, with its wide range of shops and restaurants serving international cuisine. As you wander the streets of Southportâs Chinatown (one of the first Chinatowns to be founded, as we know them today), youâll be likely to witness lively street events.
Surfers Paradise is home to the Paradise Centre. This outdoor shopping arcade features surf shops, big brands, casual estaurants and ample outdoor space. There are family-friendly activities organised throughout the year, including a winter festival with a giant snow dome. The outdoor mall is steps from the beach.
The Gold Coastâs reputation as a party Mecca precedes it. If you want to party hard, hit up Surfers Paradise, with its mix of backpacker bars and luxury lounges. You will find pubs, clubs and karaoke bars.
In Broadbeach, take your pick of hotel bars, as well as a number of clubs and pubs in the town centre. Broadbeach is also the setting of a 24-hour casino, with its own bar and club.
Various taverns along the Gold Coast also feature live bands on a weekly basis. To get acquainted with Gold Coast nightlife, join a nightclub tour, where party hosts will take your group from venue to venue.
Drive to the Gold Coast from Brisbane in just under an hour or fly into the Gold Coastâs Coolangatta Airport from other major Australian cities. If you donât have access to a vehicle, you can easily get to the Gold Coast Waterfront from Queenslandâs capital city via public transport.
A direct train, departing Brisbane Airport and the CBD, will take you to the Gold Coast hinterland. From there, a connecting bus will drop you off in Broadbeach or Surfers Paradise. A new light rail system connects these towns to the others along the coast.
