Fraser Island: Sands That Time Forgot

Fraser Island is the largest sand island not just in Australia, but in the whole world. With approximately 122 kilometres of white sand beaches abutting crystal blue waters, Fraser Island is an ocean lover's dream. The beauty of this island comes with the responsibility of being a World Heritage Site. Fraser Island is easily accessible, as it is just off Hervey Bay. Ferries shuttle the 350,000 yearly visitors to and from Fraser Island, and upon arrival, holidaymakers are spoiled for choice when it comes to accommodation options. Luxury resorts, ocean-view apartments, quaint villas and beach houses allow guests to have the holiday experience of their choice on Fraser Island.

Bring Along a Four-Wheel Drive

Many of the areas of Fraser Island are best - or only - explored using a vehicle with superb off-road capabilities. Start your adventures on Seventy-Five Mile Beach. This is the main road on the island and it is only accessible during times when the tide is not overly high. As you drive along, keep your eyes peeled for landing planes and for the dingoes that regularly roam the beach. There are literally hundreds of sand tracks linking the various points of interest on the island. Spend your day touring Fraser Island by following these tracks or set out with a specific destination in mind. One must-see while you are out and about is the Cathedrals - a set of towering sand cliffs that are naturally made and covered in multiple hues of sand.

Explore the Rainforest

Fraser Island is the only place in the world where rainforest grows from sand. The trees that inhabit the island are over 1,000 years old and soar to amazing heights, and one of the best ways to see them is by partaking in a walk through the forest. All of the paths are clearly marked, and trail lengths range from a short stroll to day-long hikes. Some guided walking tours are also offered. Have a picnic in the rainforest and sample some of the fresh water flowing through the stream. Before you exit the rainforest, make sure you tour the historic buildings which have been beautifully maintained.

On the Lookout for Wildlife

Fraser Island is a haven for a number of species of birds and animals. Ranger-guided walks throughout the island are the best way to see over 350 species of birds and 25 inland mammals. Some favourites you are bound to see during your daytime adventure include wallabies, kangaroos and echidnas. If you feel especially adventurous, head out for a nighttime tour and watch various species in their natural habitat, such as flying foxes, sugar gliders, possum and colourful frogs. The beach is a great destination to spot sea turtles, dolphins and even sharks. Bring your binoculars along, as humpback whales pass through the waters of Fraser Island between May and November.

Discover Fraser IslandÃÂs Vast History

Get your dose of local history while on holiday in Fraser Island, as this locale is teeming with traces of Aboriginal, Australian and European activity. Set right on one of Fraser Island's beaches, the S.S. Maheno is an on-land shipwreck site available for exploration. Sacred Aboriginal sites abound on Fraser Island; take a tour to see campsites, fishing grounds, a birthing place and other places of significant importance to the native people. Other historic sites on the island include McKenzie's Jetty, Sandy Cape Lighthouse and the Arch Cliffs. Use the services of a tour guide to get the most out of each historic site on Fraser Island.
